There are a number of versions of this song on KZbin. I have collected most of them in a favorites list.But this is the ONLY version with the words "She taught me to drink and smoke whiskey."

He's playing a mixture of both it looks like, a very simple claw hammer. Just strumming and popping with the thumb.
