How does rock-a-bye work? The lullaby is about a baby falling out of a tree, presumably to their death, for what purpose would that put the child to sleep?

Most lullabies for small children are incredibly dark, covering subject matters like dead children or other violent and traumatic experiences, whether disguised behind a sanitized veneer of child-friendliness or not. One theory behind why is that most children small enough to be put to sleep using lullabies cannot understand language yet (or are too young to completely grasp the significance of what is being said), giving parents an opening to vent and express their emotions about possible traumas that may involve the child through the song or singing about a harmful situation to the child in hopes that it will somehow protect them from harm in similar ways.
