I like Freddy because he's got his own swag. He actually talks & is funny. He has an interesting backstory (even though he's a pedo) & an interesting reason for killing (revenge & to feed/strengthen himself). His trademark weapon (glove) & powers are unique, and he uses them to kill in clever ways. And there's no escaping him, because he's immortal & everyone needs to sleep.

@@supersonicspeed6917 Well, Freddy was created in the 80s, so if censorship today is bad, you know it was worse back then. I remember back then Freddy was referred to as "a child molestor" & that's as far as they'd go. But we all know that means he was a pedo, they just didn't use that terminology so freely back then like they do today. There's just somethings that are stated outright, for obvious reasons. The end of the first movie is a dream obviously. It kind of implies that Freddy is still alive at got her in the end. But then she is still alive in the 3rd movie. Short answer to why he's a horror icon: Because he's Freddy fucking Krueger! Anyone outside of Crystal Lake, NJ is safe from Jason Voorhees. Not going to Haddonfield, Illinois? Well then you don't have to worry about Michael Myers. Weird puzzle boxes that look like demonic Rubix Cubes aren't your thing? Then Pinhead and his posse will kindly fuck off. But sooner or later, EVERYONE has to sleep. Sure, he's mostly tethered to Elm Street. But as he says in Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare, the worst installment in the franchise, "Every town has an Elm Street!" I feel like a reboot could have fun with the idea of finding a way for Freddy to visit the dreams of those who don't live on Elm Street. Say an Elm Street resident is talking to his or her friend on Facetime, about these fucked up dreams they're having, of a burned man in a red and green sweater, with knives for fingers. Suddenly, that friend is thinking about Freddy, too. And when the Elm Street friend dies, that friend is not only thinking about Freddy, but feeling the same fear their friend was having. Then, the nightmares start happening.

Hold on..."without the mourning aspect" in New Nightmare? Did you forget the scene where Heather's husband is killed and the brilliant scene where she goes to the morgue to identify his body? It's set up and shot to look like Heather is dreaming, and you expect Freddy to pop out at any moment, but it's all real, and her husband is really dead. The reverse happens in the funeral scene when everything is bright and sunny making you think she's awake, but then Freddy shows up and it's clear she's dreaming. It's a great example of how New Nightmare plays with your expectations. You also didn't really go into much detail on how Craven's script was brilliant for its time in handling the movie within a movie meta stuff. He broke the cycle of goofy sequels and made Freddy scary again. RIP Wes.

The _one_ thing I'd disagree with is Freddy being shown his reflection being a lazy death. I felt like it was like a counter of sorts; he kills people using their own passions/problems, i.e. their death reflects the way they lived. Showing him his reflection then caused him to die a gruesome death.

I think the allegorical nature of Freddy Kreugar was powerplay. He preyed on a vulnerable demographic, and in their dreams he had all the control. His powers/authority were fuelled by fear, in the first anyway, so it makes sense he gets these extremely sadistical kicks and cracks a joke here there. This is what empowers a lot of serial killers, and Freddy Kreugar is a titular embodiment of sick and twisted fantasy, something I think, they really should've stressed.
