A couple of things you missed in the initial found footage video: 1) the graffiti you had a hard time reading says “God closed his eyes,” I’m pretty sure 2) a frame-by-frame scrub through the end with the monster reveals that the filmmaker didn’t actually escape from the backrooms, only his camera did, as the poor guy himself got grabbed by the monster and it shows in the footage after he drops his camera in shock

Honestly the most incredible part of The Backrooms video was the fact that the ENTIRELY CG ENVIRONMENT felt so real, and the fact that there was exactly enough suspense and jumpscares to make me actually jump at a chair flying into a wall. I also love the detail that he drops the camera in the final scene, as you can see that the construct has grabbed him. This concept is perfectly adapted to the short film format.

It you're surprised it looked so real then you don't know how much cg is in every Hollywood movie. I will say, I never liked the original Backrooms narrative, before Kane's take. It was a novel concept ruined by a bunch of weird, nonsensical creatures that had such specific counters that it ruined the fear. Like when you know all the mechanics to a horror game and it fails to spook you. But this reignited the interest that first description of the idea gave. It gives enough that you're interested and drawn in, but then it leaves you with enough uncertainty to be anxious the whole time. Actually amazing

I’ve read hundreds of books in this genre, and even wrote a few short stories, and I must say that this is just some damn good science fiction. To pull off shots like this in any 3D rendering engine would take hours. To incorporate realistic camera movement into that scene and to also so masterfully match real time footage of people together with the 3D environment in a believable manner is something that even Hollywood fails at frequently. The fact Kane is so young but accomplishing this much on this kind of scale is frankly incredible. Props to Kane also for realising that the Backrooms make an excellent setting for this exact kind of rendering/filming, where most of your motion takes place in a very plain setting and your more complex shots tend to be kept to borderline stills. As a graphic designer myself I'm not being patronising when I say that it takes genuine talent to realise where and how to capitalise on settings. Seriously good stuff, and I hope the future is bright for somebody with this much talent and creative direction.

If recent horror media has taught me anything, it's that there's a right and a wrong way to do found footage. The Backrooms, the mysterious, disturbing, nightmarish scenario it is... is the perfect example of how to do it right. There's a reason it's being recorded, there's a damn solid reason to keep recording after that first reason is fulfilled. Between every horrifying moment, every second of building tension, Kane remembered to do the one thing so many found footage horrors fail to do; give a reason for the footage to exist in the first place.

The amount of work and detail put into this series is mind boggling. I'm waiting for the next video to drop with total anticipation. I really want to know more about the A-Sync research foundation, the Backrooms Monster if there's anything left of all the missing persons that no clipped out of existence. Kane Pixels took a simple horror concept and created an entire story behind it and I want to see how that story ends.

This is outstanding, the sound design is as impactful as the visuals. I wonder if the Backrooms have always existed, these humans just manufactured the connection to access it. Also, human interference is changing the Backrooms, like how the creature was humanoid in shape. It also reminded me of how people look when they emerge from the Amigara Fault. Thank you for showing this Nick, brilliant work Kane!!

seems like the backrooms fit into the video game take on em more than anything else. 1 protagonist no clips through the floor. 2 the large texture of a house on the wall in the new ep. thats disappointing imho. i really enjoyed the physical space take on it more. like they fractalized a building that already existed into subspace or some crap.

Honestly I don't think the VHS effect was faked. As you say that would have taken an extraordinary amount of extra computer time. I immediately thought while making this, "huh, piping a 3D render into a VCR and then copying the tape's composite out back to computer, pretty cheap and effective way to up the verisimilitude." Is there any reason you think the VHS effect was a render setting and not, you know, a VCR and a cheap capture card?
@GeoNosiS263 жыл бұрын
It’s possible and I’ve seen some KZbinrs go into detail about it. But the less expensive and less film/video editor savvy way would be to just use a hq vhs filter which can be easily found for Blender and After Effects ( both programs Kane definitely used in the making of this animation )
@GuyNamedSean3 жыл бұрын
That's what I was thinking. It's definitely not any of the older filters that I've seen. Those don't really distort in the same way that VHS had. If he's got access to one of those VHS digitizers, then it would be pretty easy to accomplish insane quality that filters just can't do.

The technical creativity and vision is, in a word, well, genius. I think Kane didn't realize that he'd get this much attention for this project. But, I'm glad he did.
