Musically, lyrically and vocally Nightwish are impecabble, best band for me since Queen
@damienmaynard88923 жыл бұрын
The Swan is important in Finnish mythology - takes souls to the afterlife - see the picture behind the band? Tuomas = Metal Mozart! This was written well before "The Poet and the Pendulum" - According to Tuomas, the song is the “mother of all Nightwish songs,” about himself and how he wants people to remember him as when he passes away. He said "This is the most personal song I’ve ever written. My testimony for the whole world. With this song I want to apologise everyone who deserves my apology. It also makes an “I don’t care” -statement to them who deserve it. The song is also about what Nightwish means and has meant to me. It’s all, without it I’m dead. I have created it and it has created me. When I pass away, this song’s lyrics are of what I wish to be remembered. An Ocean Soul." Emppu's solo - consistently good - compare this to the album version? Vocals pretty damn good for Floor being sick (and dizzy, wearing heels!) too!! More Marko guitar? - "The Islander" live @ Tampere!!!!

Yes, you said right Emppu! And on 12.00 you said Tuomas right :) Congratulations! :) About the song, as I understood from Tuomas interview this song is not about childhood, it’s about about a man who feels that his only safe place is in music he writes. It’s about the loneliness, when you can express your feelings through music but not everybody could understand you. It’s the letter to people to understand how it feels to be him. The “dead boy” is grown man who remembers what’s innocence is.

The Decades tour was a special one, as played a lot of songs that haven' been played for a long time. My favorite song from Buenos Aires is "Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean": Maximum speed, Floor is doing crazy things with her voice and Marco becomes (vocally) Dr. Hannibal Lecter. Another wonderful from Buenos Aires is also "Elvenjig / Elvenpath". This song is such a wonderful one and a very emotional one. I love this song a lot.

Maybe this has come up before, however, Tuomas says he's a man with a boy's heart, so anything with " boy" in it and the boy narrator that occurs in several songs, is Tuomas speaking directly to you, he will also use the pseudonyms, poet, dreamer and writer/song writer to refer to himself. It might make things more understandable. Tuomas is the boy in the backdrop imploring the swans (as has been explained) to carry him off. Marko is playing his custom shop Warwick/Framus Infinity/Panthera, you will see it in other songs, it has an acoustic sound because there's an integrated piezo pick-up in the bridge. There's two quotes from Shakespeare's sonnets in there too.

A couple of things that need mention: 1) IMO quite possibly one of the most underrated Nightwish songs that often gets overlooked in favor of other more...ehm...epic or aggressive songs. 2) a usually jovial and prank-prone Emppu appears quite somber in this one. Great reaction guys. Keep descending down that rabbit hole...Floors delivery at the end is pure liquid gold.

The acoustic version of "How is the Heart" - from Planet Rock Radio - a promotion tour from last year Floor and Troy did. Troy called Floor's voice for "Stratospheric" - you judge yourselves... And this Dead Boy's Poem - it's just a phenomenal performance from Floor, her power is awesome - you can feel the emotions in the song on your spine, due to the techniques she uses.

One of my favorites guys! Yes you said it correctly. Em-poo. It is a nickname. Full name is Erno Matti Juhani Vuorinen. Troy was on this one. He was playing a bouzouki. It is a type of large mandolin. It has 4 double strings. Tuomas has said that he had a happy childhood and a good relationship with his parents. The reason for the title is: This is a very emotional and personal song for Tuomas. The small child's voice represents Tuomas speaking. When asked what this song was about "Tuomas has said about this song, that it's about if he were to die tomorrow, what would he want to say to everyone that he loves, and that love him..." Notice the small boy on the screen reaching out to the flying swans on the screen. The swan is the guide to the afterlife in Finnish mythology. He is reaching out to implore them to take him with to the other side. A beautiful song filled with sadness from an unfulfilled destiny. Great job my friends. I agree with you. Floor's performance is so emotionally powerful. Especially the ending part. I am getting ready for the Nightwish virtual concert, which starts in about 6 hours.

Their names are hard to say for me too, lol, 2omas=Tuomas, M Poo=Emppu, but the song is about, I believe, autobiographical about Tuomas living and expressing himself through his music. He like many genius composers holds things in, and expresses many of his emotions through music. "Sing what you can't say, forget about what you can't play." I think I heard someone once say that Tuomas said these were things he would like to get off his chest if he were to die. Another great reaction guys. Nightwish are like painters they use their music and lyrics to paint in emotions rather than any specific meanings. I often think that people try to overdo their "understanding of the lyrics" when all they need to know is how the song makes them feel! Tuomas generally never reveals the "actual" meaning of a song as he likes the fact that so many people interpret them differently :D this song Tuomas has said he had a very happy childhood but he often reflects on the loss of innocence and imagination of children as they become adults.
@vogel22803 жыл бұрын
Tuomas often refers to himself as the Poet. I feel he has issues with losing innocence while growing up, rather then the disappointing his parents. Dead boy (to me) would refer to the lost inner child (and therefore innocence) in Tuomas. This song was written in 2000. You can imagine the torment Tuomas felt when he had to fire the lead singer Tarja five years later. They knew each other since kindergarden. The following depression lead to writing of the masterpiece The Poet And The Pendulum
@Gibbetoo3 жыл бұрын
they met each other in high school, they were introduced by their teacher. you would think Tuomas would have known her style to sing if they knew each other from kindergarden. "it was pure luck, we didn't know her style of singing, it was perfect for us" he said.

Dear BritPops! I have relived your reactions during the last couple of days since you declared January to be a Nighwish month. I love how understated you are in a true British even when you are exited. I would be interesting to know from which part the island you come from. Anyways, when it comes to Nightwish there are theories and rumors floating that are man made. One of them is the idea of Tuomas being a disappointment to his parents. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Tuomas' parents financially supported him as a fledging musician in the beginning of his career. However Tuomas was very different from his much older siblings and his father Pentti once marked in an interview that "I have never quite understood him." His parents were very open minded and down to earth people, who were the real heroes in Tuomas life. Sadly his father died in February 2021. Couple of years ago Tuomas mother got an idea of a small Nightwish themed museum in Kitee (probably to get rid of Tuomas' stuff that was stored in their basement).

This was really an old one, just given small new paint with Floor. Tuomas has indicated he had very "good" childhood and he's got really good parents. So (I think) his own words about this song and its lyrics are the correct one which Damien Maynard explains below/above :) This is one of my favorite NW songs, especially this Troy-Bouzuki version, "happy" melancholic song. Spoken word as far as I know stays the same, except when they have to re-record it for some reason or other and they can't use the original voice because the talents voice has broken since the original or something. Btw. Sam Hardwick (11 at the time of the recording which is kind of amazing by itself) is the son of Neil Hardwick, maybe the most loved Brit in the Finnish television and entertainment in general.

@Tuntemattomin Hello and thank you for all the information, the issue now is we are so aware about making a mistake, we make a mistake!! It's OK, we have trouble with our own names at times. We appreciate all the information. We will be back, but will let you all have a rest from us for a while, we have done quite a lot of Nightwish. Thanks for the support.

Is Kinslayer from this show your favorite because you like the song? Or because of Marko's little oopsie?

@@duncanwyer2460 Yes, yes, he is. But it's kind of like I've noticed that of the two shows the All-Hietala Power Trio did last summer, the one where Marko has a similar oopsie seems to be the more widely mentioned of the two.
