Nightwish's record label wanted Tuomas to write a 3 minute song to celebrate the 1999 eclipse in Finland. This was the result, it's not 3 minutes, it has deeper meanings and only tangentially mentions the eclipse but they released it anyway. It was a hit.

From comments to other reactions to this song, Tuomas apparently said to the record label to never ask him to do such a thing again. Yet this song is just pure magic.

It was meant to celebrate the 1999 solar eclipse in Europe as the Umbral shadow never passed over Finland. In addition to the lenght limit, Tuomas was also asked for a song with a catchy chorus.

Hi Red. You have now taken another step in the exploration of the treasure that is the Nightwish repertoire: a song dedicated to the total eclipse of the sun on August 11, 1999. Starting from such a rigidly imposed theme, it seems to me extraordinary the development of a love story in metaphorical lyrics . But, listening to their music for so many years, nothing surprises me anymore. Try "Everdream" for a future reaction, Red. I promise you won't regret it.. :)

That's our Metal Mozart Tuomas Holopainen (founder, leader, keyboardist and songwriter of Nightwish) for you. Sleeping Sun was launched on 11th of August 1999, the same day with the solar eclipse which occurred in part of Europe and Asia that year. Now if you take the exact verses which contain "222" you have: 222 days of light will be desired by the night. coincidence or not, there are exactly 222 days starting 1st of January till August 10th inclusive. - valid for non-leap years. GREAT Tarja era Song, but you know Floor, she nailed it !!! NWSU/FloorFan 🤘😎🤘.

You just can't go wrong with any choice of Nightwish song. From full on rock, to full on symphonic, to a ballad such as this and just about everything in between! I think you will love I Want My Tears Back (do the live in Buenos Aires one, the crowd are incredible) You'll also get to see Troy playing Uillean pipes in it which are Irish Bagpipes but done with the elbow to get the air rather than blowing. It's a great song and Floor seems to love it as she has a good old dance around to it 😂 Oh and there's two songs that are probably best to hold off on that are of the epic variety but better left until you've discovered them more. They are Poet and the Pendulum and The Greatest Show on Earth.

One of the early Songs, it is about the solar eclipse "two hundred and twenty two days of light will be desired by the night". Because that's the amount of time that went by before the eclipse (11th of August was the 223rd day of the year 1999). At that time their german record Label asked to write a song about it. One of the terms was "not longer than 3 minutes", Knowing Tuomas, he made it 4+ But it's also true that everyone has a different view of this song. Usually something they have experienced themselves.
@ArchitectB8 ай бұрын
The music teacher of Tuomas told, that even as a young boy, Tuomas enjoyed of being in all dark. This teacher told in one documentary that once he asked from young Tuomas: ”Don’t you be afraid in the dark?” Where Tuomas was replied ”No, I’m not afraid. Darkness feels safe and calms me” This is actually not all that strange thing here. We have even this very old expression, that ”forest is our church and darkness is our sanctuary”. I think you can hear this embracing and admiring the darkness, in the ”Sleeping sun”. When the record label they had made a request to write this song about solar eclipse which was happening that year, Tuomas was first against it, but I think he found his own purpose to write and compose this song.

Tuomas was asked to write a song about the 1999 solar eclipse. At first he said no, that's not how he writes songs, he doesn't just pick a topic and knock out a tune. He finally relented and wrote this masterpiece. The "222 days of light will be desired by a night" lyric refers to the fact that the 1999 eclipse occurred on Aug.11, 1999...the 223rd day of the year...so 222 "days of light" came before that date...GENIUS!

Only discovered Nightwish and Floor because of KZbin reactors like you, so thanks! (You share with us what the US music industry won't play). I was in awe. I broke down hearing Sleeping Sun; a remarkable power ballad about an eclipse, at its core about how fleeting life is. If you've become deathly ill and lost people too soon it hits like a ton of bricks. Floor is amazing; unearthly voice inhabiting songs. Floor broke down in Nov.2022 singing it after a series of illnesses including cancer. It was caught early but Floor has a young daughter, and as Floor's incredible power comes from her never just singing a song with that magical voice but always living the words; it was understandably too much for her. I'm glad she's clear and gave birth to a second daughter at the end of 2023, but still the song is deceptive as Floor's gorgeous and layered vocals and Emppu's haunting guitar solo remarkably convey both the great beauty, and the underlying pathos, tragedy, and sadness of the song. It's like we are transported back in time to hear a woman who has walked out of a myth and gives us one of the great ancient sonnets; gorgeous, devastating, and timeless.

But, thank you, thank you, for realizing that this is a group of consumate artists who all work together and each and every one is worthy of the highest praise. Nightwish Army South Germany Division Red, an important note on this: Have the lyrics displayed for “TGSoE” or displayed as subtitles. Parts of the lyrics are so quiet that they are lost in the music. This is particularly true of the parts spoken by Richard Dawkins. By the way, this note with the lyrics also applies to another work: "The Poet and the Pendulum". Parts of the lyrics there are also very quiet. And another note about this work: Please familiarize yourself with the background of the work beforehand, because this plays a major role behind it. greetings from Germany The lady

Great reaction. I highly recommend that you get introduced to Troy, Nightwish's beloved and extremely talented multi-instrumentalist. Troy plays the Irish Uillean pipes, an assortment of whistles, guitar (often played with an e-bow), and bouzouki (a type of lute). The song "My Walden" from their 2015 Wembley concert is a showcase for Troy, as he introduces the song, sings the opening bars in Welsh, and plays his "beautiful pipes" as Floor says.

Tuomas does not know how to write anything that isn't a masterpiece by anybody else's gauge, but just another song to him. In his bandmates, he has found the virtuosos it takes to deliver the brilliance of the compositions. Floor changed everything, being the right singer for the right band at the right time. It's also important to know that Troy became an official member of the band at the same time, and his contributions are sometimes overlooked, because he was not involved in many of the songs at Wacken 2013. To experience Tuomas, his lovedly wife Johanna, and Troy in softer masterpieces, try "AURI". You will be truly amazed. When you find how much you love it, Johanna is in another project "Eye of Melian", which is based on Tolkien fantasy.

Do you know about the upcoming total Solar eclipse of April 8, 2024 in North America? Well this song was written for the total Solar eclipse of August 11, back in 1999 in Europe, hence the title (Sleeping Sun). At some point, the lyrics of this track say " 222 days of light, will be desired by a night ". Take January 1st add 222 days to it and you'll end up at August 11th. For this Eclips we need to change that lyric into; " 99 days of light will be desired by a night ", as January 1st plus 99 days is April 8th. (2024 is a leap year). So in a way this track could work it's magic once again, just like it did 25 years ago. Ohh.....and If you have the opportunity to attend this natural phenomenon, I highly recommend you go see it (in the 100% totality zone, 99% is not enough). You don't know what you'll experience, it's not every year after all that you don't have to travel halfway around the world to witness this natural phenomenon.

Some of the Tarja era songs needs that operatic voice. I wish Floor would be more willing to do that, we all know she can. I guess she wants to do her own interpretation, and she's done it so very well in many songs. Here though, I'd really want more opera.

Thank you! Still wait you goes to hardside Nightwish. Those songs have much to react, also lyrics. Sometimes needs dictionary or science book or history book to understand everything.

Written to commemorate a solar eclipse, this song is played in F major and D minor, which is a combination that you wouldn't expect to go together. Peace and joy mixed with melancholy, grief, anxiety, and solemnity. Only Tuomas could put these together and make something this beautiful. His music never fails to astound me.

F major and D minor literally are the same scale, what are you talking about

I like your emotionality, femininity and sincerity in your reactions, I note that you have already significantly expanded your vocabulary from the lexicon of music critics, it’s impressive, but I’m still fascinated by your sincerity

Great choice! This song is a favorite of Floor's, and I think you picked the best version of it. It really showcases the angelic side of her voice. 👍🤟

⚠️ Most of us definitely don't mind you going off-script but there is one song that requires some awareness/respect. To truly grasp the depth of meaning in The Poet and the Pendulum, the following background knowledge is helpful: 1. Nightwish's notorious "open letter" of 2005 2. Tarja Turunen's Nightwish 3. Edgar Alan Poe's short story _The Pit and the Pendulum_ You can, of course, approach it raw. The piece speaks volumes poetically, but it will leave you asking, "What happened?"
