I haven't had a chance to go to a Nightwish show in person, but all the live concert footage I've seen has been absolutely amazing. I think they're a band that comes into their own on stage, with the massive light show, the pyro, and the epic nature of the concert volume. I don't know the full details of this song, but I understand that the Tuomas was in a really bad mental state after Tarja's departure. I have heard that he contemplated suicide at one point, and decided to instead write this song, which was something of a symbolic suicide and rebirth for him. The singer in this video is Annette, who had the misfortune of following one of the iconic voices of symphonic metal. It's strange how we can sometimes not forgive people for simply not being someone else. Annette faced this conundrum. The current singer, Floor, however, is such a force that she has been well received. There are still some fans who will maintain that Tarja is the best, and will always be. My feeling is that Floor is my favorite, because she's such a great singer, as well as being a very dynamic stage presence. The way I characterize it, though, is thus: Tarja was an elf queen, and Floor is a warrior princess. No real downside either way. Annette just got kind of unlucky to be put in a no win situation. She's a great vocalist in her own right. She did a guest with Swallow the Sun on "Cathedral Walls", and was amazing.

The 2015 Wembley performance with Floor Jansen as the lead singer is really emotional. Floor puts a lot of emotion in her performance, so much more than Anette did on the album.

Whatever you guys do, try to avoid saying which vocalist is better. They are each good in their own way. Tarja was first, some songs she is undeniable. Anette had a smoother delivery that was sweet on the ears but still strong at times. Floor Jensen is a TALL powerhouse with incredible versatility, a great stage presence. All 3 of them are Classically trained. Tarja and Floor add Opera into the mix.

Very big thank you for this! This is one of my favourite Nightwish songs. The debate between all three singers is endless, but I personally like all of them. Anette was the most "pop" singer of these three, but she has really beautiful tone in his voice. And she did really well in this song.

Thanks for this reaction Vin and Sori! Nightwish and Jinjer are my favorite bands. This version is with Anette, she was an ok singer , very pop/lightrock kind of style, many people like her after she entered r Nightwish and replaced Tarja after her being fired from the band due to some “disagreements”. I actually didn’t follow Nightwish anymore cause I think their sound became really popish with this new singer Anette in the vocals. But when they fired Anette, and then Floor Jansen (she’s originally from the Nederlands ) entered the band in a hurry and saved Nightwish from canceling they Northamerican tour, then she became my favorite singer, cause she’s amazing! If you guys have the time , please check this song with Floor live at Wembley. I listened that you said this song is EPIC, then listen to Floors version and you really will be blown away by his power, voice , charisma and the feelings and emotion she puts at every song! Please next reaction from Nightwish, Ghost Love Score live at Wacken or the official live version from Buenos Aires! Cheers

The Genre is actually called Symphonic Metal. When the keyboard player (and leader of the band) has been asked in interviews even his response is that they are 'Symphonic Metal'. Nightwish is actually credited as one of the primary bands that introduced this Genre into the Metal world. There is a huge page on Wikipedia about Symphonic Metal, its history and origins. Symphonic Metal is defined as; a subgenre of heavy metal music which combines the heavy drums and guitars and bass of metal with different elements of orchestral classical style music. The guitar is not the focal point of the music as in other metal genre's, however the keyboard becomes the primary focal point of the music, reproducing a 'movie-scorish' style orchestral score, and most all Symphonic Metal bands are almost exclusively female fronted, with a secondary male singer. Male fronted Symphonic Metal bands such as Kamelot and Serenity are usually refereed to as Symphonic Power Metal. Nightwish has had 3 singers in their history, of which now spans more then 20 years (the band started around 1996). Thier first singer was named Tarja Turunen who was an opera singer. Just a side note, Tuomas Holopainen the keyboard player married Finnish pop singer Johanna Kurkela on October 28, 2015. Tarja Turunen actually married her producer Marcelo Cabuli from Argentina on May 07, 2003. The song I believe is more about the breakup of the family unit that Nightwish had become amoungst the band members. The name of the singer in this particular song, The Poet And The Pendulum, is Anette Olzen who is from Sweden and was their second singer in 20 years. Their third and most recent singers name is Floor Jansen who is a dutch singer who has a long history in Metal (and Symphonic Metal in particular). Floor Jansen has been with Nightwish now since around 2012 and is a very dynamic and extremely versatile singer. The most recent DVD/Bluray release by Nightwish that I highly recommend is titled VEHICLE OF SPIRIT, and features two full 2 hour long concerts, one in Tampere, Finland which was recorded on July 31, 2015, and the other at Wembley Arena, in London England on December 19, 2015. I would personally recommend any songs from the Wembley Arena show which could include Ghost Love Score, Greatest Show On Earth, Ever Dream, Nemo, I want My Tears Back, or perhaps Élan.

As others have already said, this song is a bit more complicated than just the "breakup" with Tarja. It also contains several symbolic literature references: the title is a reference to Edgar Allan Poe's "The Pit and the Pendulum" which explains the pendulum symbolism, the descending blade etc. and "White Lands of Empathica" is from Stephen King's Dark Tower series. I mean, the aftermath was definitely tough on Nightwish and especially on Tuomas -- he's an emotional guy and takes things pretty hard in general and he definitely bore the blame of the entire situation even if there were five other people involved. And it wasn't just the Tarja thing but he felt like he had failed his band, his baby, in general. Nightwish was pretty much his entire life and after Tarja was gone he wasn't sure if the band had a future at all. So yeah, the song is a symbolic suicide, and the last part is his parents welcoming him in Heaven.

I don't know if anyone else has cleared this up, but this song is about Tuomas, the leader/songwriter of the band, committing suicide after the band booting Tarja out of the band. Apparently he was suicidal from the emotions that came from the break up and he used the writing of this song as a "healthy" way to "kill himself" instead as a sort of coping mechanism. You even hear near the end the name "Tuomas" in the lyrics. Funny thing is, when this album first came out I had no clue what the song was actually about either and it has been one of my favorite Nightwish songs since, me not realizing it was about the leader of the band commiting suicide...lol. Also, the firing of Tarja had to do a lot with her husband. Apparently he was sort of turning her into a "diva" and when they would tour she would ride on her own private plane with her husband away from the rest of the band. Also, her husband was trying to make her the "focus" or "star" of the show as if she was a solo artist with the rest of the members as a backup band. My theory is everyone else in the band, except Tuomas, wanted her out. I feel since Tuomas knew her since highschool he highly regarded her as his singer and it was hard for him to turn his back on her, but due to everyone else in the band voting to boot her he couldn't do too much without fully breaking the band up. One last thing, you JUST missed Nightwish on the North American leg of their "Decades" tour, a tour that is celebrating 20 years of the group and they play songs through all their albums. I actually got to go and see them on this tour for the first time after being a fan of the band since the early 2000's.

Chris Bergsten Tarja did choose to leave, she just hadn't yet. She had begun copyright of her name as a separate entity from NIGHTWISH. Side info: The recording of Ave Maria on Tarja's first solo album was actually recorded during Soundcheck for "End Of An Era" while Tarja was warming up her vocals. It was just her an Tuomas.

+skeletank mcgraw *Yes!* *Truth!* The only thing I'd add is that since Tuomas had had an unrequited crush for Tarja for as long as they had known each other (the *depth* of that crush is a thing that *only* Tuomas would know), "Mr. Tarja" directly confronted Tuomas about it, saying something like "You'll never have her." From my *own* experience, "Mr. Tarja" is an utter a-hole, because I actually *met* him and Tarja in a local Supermarket when Tarja used to live around here. Being a fan, I approached in a polite, civilized manner, and Tarja chatted with me. His husband, on the other hand, did *not* even *acknowledge* my presence, acting as if Tarja was speaking to an imaginary person. What a tool. Hence I won't speak his name. Maybe he is happier with the money Tarja has been making as a *solo* artist than he was with the money Tarja was making *in* Nightwish.

Yeah, this song (and album) was sung by Anette. A ton of people dislike her vocals in NIghtwish. I personally like it in songs like "Poet and the Pendulum" and "The Islander". Their new new singer is Floor Jansen. If you want to do yourself a favour, listen to the Wacken 2013 version of "Ghost Love Score". That's important: THAT live version exactly. Ghost Love Score is an old NW song (originally sung by Tarja) and Floor bloody NAILS IT. Holy fuck! Also, "The Greatest Show On Earth" - Floor sings that one originally, it's a new song. It's a song about the concept of evolution and portrays this musically by portraying the "evolution of music", so to say. You have classical/operatic parts in there and more "tribal" sounding things and towards the end their guitarist plays cheekily plays a line "Inspired by" Enter Sandman by Metallica. :D

Pete Santos I must've seen Anette on good days, because she was good both times I saw her with Nightwish. 2007 at Harpo's in Detroit, and 2012 five days before she was fired at Royal Oak Music Theatre, Royal Oak, MI. She looked like she enjoyed being onstage (yes, even the 5 days before firing show) and sang very well on her own songs. Sometimes she did struggle a bit when they did an older song with the higher ranges, but I knew she didn't have the upper range Tarja did anyways, so it wasn't a surprise.

agreed I saw her in 2007 and she had a strong showing with the songs from Amaranth. but as everyone here has mentioned she didn't have the lungs for Tarja's songs. She was fun to watch but for me Flor is amazing! my only regret is looking up their tour schedule the year Tarja left the bad, :/

Anette had issues live. She sounded great on the albums. . She rarely seemed to fit in with the band. The band dressed Gothic but Anette dressed like she was hunting for Easter Eggs in a Scandinavian meadow. Towards the end of her tenure with NIGHTWISH, Anette was suffering from anxiety related illness. The U.S. tour had just started. NIGHTWISH contacted Floor Jensen (who was teaching choir, piano and music theory at a school in Amsterdam) and gave her a first class ticket and 3 days to learn the set-lists before joining the band to continue the tour. With only a Soundcheck for rehearsal, Floor performed Perfectly. She has been the primary vocalist for NIGHTWISH ever since.

sopwithsnoopy apparently Anette got sick or something and was hospitalized just before the show. They asked Floor Jansen and this other singer to fill Anette and of course Anette was not pleased about it. I guess that was the final straw. This whole episode is on one of their DVD. Just watch it.

Anette was an amazing singer. The problem came when she tried to do the more operatic numbers. Tarja was amazing, but she'd have trouble doing the songs written for Anette. Then Floor rolls in, and just owns the place on songs from the previous singers, and her own, making them completely and utterly her own. Best thing to do, is just listen to songs from all 3 eras, as their sound conforms to the singer, and what the singer is capable of, while still keeping that epic sound. A great taste of the Tarja era is their version of "Phantom of the Opera." My favorite anette song is hands down "Storytime." Floor..any of her songs are amazing.

It kinda reminds me of what happened with Iced Earth. You had Matt songs, and you had Ripper songs. And Matt couldn't sing the Ripper songs and Ripper really struggled with Matt's songs. But Stu is kinda able to do both. Maybe not as well as Matt or Tim on their respective material, but like Floor he's a really really competent vocalist and like Floor he is actually able to growl. Iced Earth hasn't really let him utilize it that much, but there are a few songs where you hear his vocals from Into Eternity pop out.

Floor is also a better overall frontwoman. You can watch her videos, and know she's enjoying herself, feeling the energy of the music and the crowd. And it reflects in her performance. She really gets into it, and sings the hell out of the songs.

I meant it how I said it. Some of the songs that Anette sang, Tarja would have difficulty doing, because they were written around Anette's style. Like Storytime. It's not me being degrading in any way to Tarja as a singer, it's just how the songs were written. I enjoy all 3 singers just about equally, as they all made excellent music with the band.

I gotta go see Nightwish LIVE. Anyone should! I planned on seeing them in November near where I live, but sadly just missed out on a ticket due to unfortunate circumstances. I'll keep a look out though to hopefully grab one eventually. Trust me on this. Go watch any performance for Wacken 2013 and you'll see just how grand and epic this band can be. Few recommendations from that show: 1. Ghost Love Score 2. Romanticide 3. I Want My Tears Back The first one... **insert every adjective you know here**

I feel like the song isn't only love, though. I read it as "You were my mojo, but also bad for me". For instance: "One last perfect verse yet still the same old song". They made beautiful music together, but her way of acting was also really hard for him. He had the dilemma between continuing with this wildly popular vocalist that he made beautiful music with, or to take care of his own wellbeing, and it seems like none of them were unproblematic for him. That he would lose either way. And that's also how I have understood the pendulum. It swings between the regard for the music and fans on one side, and regards for his bandmates and himself on the other. But no matter which side the pendulum is on, the blade falls on him, because he's the main dude in the band. Therefore, he can't share his side of it and his feelings towards the break up, he "can not cry, because the shoulder (meaning the people he complain to, the fans) cries more because they lost Tarja. They turn to him to cry about it while he also feels like crying about it, but he has no room for doing that.

Everyone wants to give Annette so much shit. But her 2 albums are 2 of the best albums Nightwish had. Way better than the album Floor did. Even though Floor (and Tarja) are more technically talented (and better stage performers) Annette still has a very good voice and put out 2 awesome albums, and she is still a very important part of the history of Nightwish. Besides Marco is the best vocalist the band has ever had.

Agreed. For me...a complete emotional high. That being said, Ghost Love Score, at Buenos Aires, is my favorite performance, for the mere fact that Floor had really just joined the group, that year (2012.) There was still some uncertainty, in the minds of Tuomas and Emppu, as to whether or not fans would welcome yet another new vocalist. Then, to hear the crowd, at the end, to see Emppu's smile, as soon as Floor nails that massive note... and then hearing the crowd chanting "Floor! Floor! Floor! Floor!"... it was magical. It was the crowd letting Tuomas abdc Emppu know...they love her, and she's now part of the family. It gave me goosebumps, and made my eyes tear up. (Well, so did the Wacken performance, but, that's another story. 😉🤘)

this is the breakdown: 1)Tarje - angelic opera style voice. original NW could conjure elves and fayries, but that is all she can do. 2) Annette - you heard her sharp and clean voice, not operatic falsetto (or wtf it is called). Her range is excellent, but she cannot do the operatic, only mastery of more the pop sound, 3)Floor- she is atomic powered and can belt the pop out but also has good mastery of the operatic vocals(not as amazing as Tarje, but still great). Floor, of the 3 is the one to help NW move into the future and permit songs written in several directions.
