@Doudoussin4 ай бұрын
Want to be even more mindblown ? Tuomas says this song's lyrics has several meanings, the main one being a representation of life as an Ocean and the islands being the people you meet... But people have also theorized that another meaning might be Tuomas' own life with Nightwish and current and previous band members. Like "the retiree" who could be Marko. And if that's true, it would mean the musical influences from all the eras of the band could be extremely deliberate
@Benzos61494 ай бұрын
It’s very similar to many Nightwish songs in that respect. It’s hardly anything new though, in fact, it’s very mid-late 2000 in its technical predictability. Tuomas has developed a dark side to his bitterness over the filmscore he’ll never be asked to write, even turning on his own inspiration Hans Zimmer in his criticism - wow Tuomas, you’re not in the same league for the very reasons you decided to twice rebuke his invitation backstage. Seriously, twice? Why twice? Like sending a message without ever being man enough to deliver it in person heh Tuomas? Hans remains clueless btw, maybe a third snub is needed?

With The Poet and the Pendulum brought into context, I see the dots you connect but also offer this for consideration: An Ocean of Strange Islands is more a sequel, or perhaps even an addendum to TPATP. The ending of TPATP implies the mother figure at the song's end is directing the character (Tuomas, if we're being literal) to "find his shore," as he has "such oceans within." Hence the common core themes of discovery by looking into the past and toward the future. TPATP is surviving s*icide in a song, evidenced by the live performances where Tuomas essentially pantomimes beheading himself with the sound effect of the pendulum swinging. This song, and subsequent albums since Endless Forms Most Beautiful really feel as though Tuomas, the author and narrator of the Nightwish's music and universe, has discovered a beauty in living that many post-s*icidal people tend to land on, myself included. It's essentially saying "Fine. Since I'm forced to live as I was forced to be born, then I will see beauty in this world even if I have to create it myself." Or perhaps that's just a reach. Frankly, I could write whole essays on Tuomas's lyrics as if they were a literary classic in the broad academic sense lol.

Funny how this new Nightwish music takes time to fully understand it's full potential. Yesterday at first listen: "I feel I don't get it, nice thou" (feels bit sad about that) Later that day: "Nice riffs and solos. Lyrics are still bit too cryptical..." Today at first re-listening: Now I get it! Yes, yes, YES!" (Bursts into fire deep inside) This album and it's songs are so magical to realize easily at first time. I never thought this could happen to big old fan of the band, but bar gets higher with every album. Huge thanks to Nightwish team for giving us joy, hope, love, understanding and many other feelings people share around world with this all. Every soul saved from underworld-like reality counts.

Same thing happened to me! I began to appreciate it at the third or fourth listening. My brothers and sisters in the Nightwish fanbase: isn’t it always like this? They always bring the strange and new out there stuff first: Harvest, Music, Perfume of the timeless, Elan…. And some pronounce them dead for metal, its not symphonic or its too symphonic, not enough Floor or too easy for Floor (even when she says otherwise), No Marco, too much pipes ….. Its the death of Nightwish…. Then they slap us in the face and back to attention with this song, or Tribal, or Shoemaker, or Storytime or TGSOE….. and on we go. They remain a genre on their own and when they delve into Symphonic Metal they are still its masters…. Its a great album. Congratulations to all of @nightwish

Thank you for the reminder! This is my first new Nightwish release since I only discovered them in 2019 or 2020. I've heard songs I loved immediately and those I've warmed up to which I eventually loved. I'm confident that will happen again.

This is my favourite nightwish song😮 I have no words! The song that made me confidently claim that Yesterwynde is their strongest album is An Ocean Of Strange Islands! This song encompasses all the eras of Nightwish and all their greatest tracks. Whatever I say about this song will not be enough!❤❤❤❤

The highest quality of composition, the highest quality of recording, high philosophy and morality. There is no doubt that at the moment Nightwish is the flagship of symphonic metal.

Massive "Pharao Sails to Orion" vibes in the first parts of the song. I like it!
@mikkis17464 ай бұрын
Interesting... I was trying to interpret the visually amazing ending part of the video and what its meaning(s) could be - and ended up thinking there could be a visual reference to "Pharaoh Sails to Orion" kind of themes in it. If the song is interpreted to be about navigating through human life, then what else is the beautiful, slow, melancholy, somehow hopeful instrumental end part - other than about the inevitable death. The visuals in the ending part focus on the sail and the skies above. The sail shape pretty closely resembles a pyramid in those shots. The pyramids and ships were important tools in Egyptian mythology to help the pharaoh navigate in the afterlife. The beautiful final image where colors appear seems to reflect the image of the butterfly on top of the mast onto the sky above. A visual of the transition of the soul to the stars in the afterlife? Could even be about Tuomas himself as the song contains many references to the band and its other songs?

I'd love to have seen Empuu and Floor's faces when Thuomas rolled this one off the demo track ... "Yeah, cheers mate... Just the seventeen tempo and key changes then?"
@flowq38744 ай бұрын
From what I have readat least Foor seems to be very unhappy with that. But like the fans say: It is what it is, and Tuomas intended it, so it must be great.

@@flowq3874 I mean Floor's allowed to have her own tastes in music but a song with a lot of tempo and key changes isn't intrinsically bad, it just depends on what you're looking for. I like complexity and variety in music, myself. Being too samey is boring.
