NihongoGamer Still though doesn't explain why the box says "Internet required" and mentions a large download. In any case, I wouldn't jump to conclusions just yet regarding cartridges, especially since you've got other much bigger Switch games fully on cartridge (Like Dragon Quest Heroes 1+2).
@shadowledastray7 жыл бұрын
I can't help but wonder if this may be an error on the box, perhaps a carry-over from other console versions that may require 13 gigs of space to install Lego City. Hopefully this is the case, as all its gonna take is one company going the cheap route with the smallest size Switch card that will require downloading the rest of the game... If that happens (without a backlash), then the floodgates will be open for any and every publisher to go with the smallest card size possible, forcing you to download the remaining 2/3rds of their game. Switch cards will then become nothing more than a glorified install-disc. I'd like to think that won't happen.

As a game developer I see both sides. Ive seen teams stick to deadlines to ship a game no matter if its done or not if the players are demanding its release on time. This results in a half baked potatoe and shit experience / awful review / flame wars. But I have also seen teams that refuse to ship games until they are done and the players bitch all the way to the release but immediately after playing it praise the devs for waiting and doing it properly. In short.. basically it depends on the company and their financial targets for the year. And that sucks. And also why I respect the companies that "ship it when it's done"

Not all DLC were part of the original game. That's something many gamers forget. But do developer's release unfinished games? Short answer, yes.
@gelmir73227 жыл бұрын
This anti-cartridge/anti-physical media trend is a way to make consumers entirely dependent on third party corporation as it offers many money-making advantages 1. It helps combat piracy by locking the game intialization, fix, patches, transfer, etc... under the approval of the third party provider. 2. Justify unfinished products under the guise of "DLC" and extended/alternate scenarios 3. Help facilitates microtransactions options 4. Stop second hand retailing. 5. Dynamic and targetted advertising 6. Consumers information and Data-mining opportunity 7. Reduce cost on physical media and all its supports (logistics, packaging, warehouses, delivery etc)

That still makes no sense. Were they just rushing it out the door? I feel carts have a higher expectation to be complete than disc media. It bothers me that the Nintendo Seal of Quality would allow such a game on their system, and I can't remember a time when I doubted a cart on their handhelds being complete. This seems more a turning point for Nintendo quality than anything else.
@g44r4dd77 жыл бұрын
+duketogo1300 That seems too far fetched to think its Nintendo's Fault, rather than to think its the devs fault trying to cut down the production cost, because the game is 20 gbs heavy, the cartridges support much more than that, its more of a greedy act from the developers, trying to pin this on Nintendo seems too far fetched as of now, but is totally plausible :/ , yet its too early to make heads roll

+Oscar Concepcion My point was more about precedent than blame. We've seen releases from Warner with problems before (Arkham Origins PC), and before that the PC had seen plenty of sloppy releases. I grew up with NES-era Nintendo, a control freak, who ultimately protected the customer from publishers' sloppy release decisions. If this was avoidable with LCU, standards should've been enforced.

There is something really satisfying in having the physical media with you. Less than 32GB cartridges are cheaper than the Xbone and PS4 game discs, 64GB is slightly more, 128 GB+ is where the price starts super inflating So the Lego game is they wanted to make more money from Switch owners with a 8GB game card instead of just buying a 32GB card

But even the cheapest ones have to cost more than a dollar to developers . Because Nintendo licenses them . This means they can sell them at any price they want to developers . Most probably anything over 8 Gb cost to developers over $5 . Largest ones could cost $10 .

Is it a good anti-piracy measure?
@jomon3247 жыл бұрын
absol_89 let's put it this way: NOTHING will EVER be a good anti-piracy measure. Even if you're not religious, the bible verses about not gathering the fallen wheat from where you missed harvesting and letting the poor have it is the way to go. People are gonna pirate regardless of status, so the only way to have it go away is to garner company with good morality as its core. If piracy isn't seen as edgy, that's when it'll stop. There's so many factors that go into it.
@mathew633man7 жыл бұрын
What in the world are you talking about to defend piracy? If you don't have money, then you don't get to enjoy it. Like everything else in life, stealing is wrong. Don't steal. It's a common sense. A common rule shared by every culture and country. Piracy is wrong. Fucking pay for it or get a job.
@BlazeBluetm357 жыл бұрын
He isn't defending piracy, he's stating that nothing will stop piracy, in the digital media at least, there will always be a flaw for people to exploit in order to crack that product. Why do they crack the software in the first place? Because they can and it's fun :D. Some people don't want to miss out on a piece of entertainment just because it's not available in their country or because it's out of their price range, i know people who work and barely have enough to live from yet they want to relax playing new games. It's puzzling i know, you'd say "Well then, why won't he get better work?" but from there it gets complicated, maybe he's in a shitty country where he can't or maybe he has other problems, who knows.
@jomon3247 жыл бұрын
Blaze Rom exactly. Digimon World Next 0rder in "english" on the PS Vita for example. You can't have that unless you have the SEA version of the game AND you rip the game to your console and apply a patch to unlock the english text stored in the game's data. "Just play it on your TV," you say. "PAH!" I respond, "I don't own a TV, nor do I want one. This is why I bought the Vita version in the first place." There's a lot more to piracy than "stealing." The switch on/off cartridge debacle will likely lead to people making compiled versions of the games so that even after people buy the game, they just go on some forum and streamline the process by downloading the full game to their PC and then transferring it to the switch, cutting out the middle man of having an install time.
@JordiPower7 жыл бұрын
You know what PISSES ME OFF REAL BAD? The fact that the Switch doesn't store save data on the cartridge! 😡😡😡😡 I loved that for Game Boy games, SNES games, DS and 3DS games! Why Nintendo? WHYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!??? 😔😔😔😔😭😭😭😭 If I want to take my game and play it on another console, I want to be able to continue, without the need of Internet, or transferring data, or syncing anything, or having to put my damn Nintendo account into another console! Oh by the way, cool vid, mate! 👌😉
@TheSpaceking127 жыл бұрын
JordiPower probably has to do with data constraints. At 32 gig these cards are by far the largest ever used in a console before. It could honestly just be a case of space constraints by means of the carts for factor. In this case perhaps going for something a bit higher probably would have helped.
@antoniopedro62737 жыл бұрын
JordiPower I guess that's a cost reduction measure. Traditionally cartridges used to have a Read Only memory sector to store game data, and a smaller Writable Flash memory to store save data. It's more complex to manufacture cartridges with two types of memory, and supposedly more costly as well. The Nintendo Switch cartridges feature an unprecedented high amount of Read Only memory, with some carts reaching up to 32GB. Including so much Read Only memory is already costly as it is, if they included some additional Writeable Flash memory it would make the carts prohibitely expensive to the point of discouraging third party developers from releasing Switch ports of their games. In fact we are already seeing cases of Switch ports having a higher price than on competing platforms, and the AAA games only keep the $60 price parity because Nintendo is enforcing their old $60 price cap for games. The Lego City Undercover cartridge drama was revealed to be a misunderstanding, as the game publisher (Warner Bros) confirmed that the game doesn't require any download in order to be played, but the media coverage and consumer backlash may pressure other publishers to think twice before trying to use this scummy tactic.
@Jaricko7 жыл бұрын
That isn't that bad. I know this is something that sounds good but cartridges had a flaw in the save system it previously used. Over time batteries within the cartridges would die, messing up the cartridges save function. In addition it could only really save a finite number of times. Your old pokemon yellow, blue and red cartridges don't work anymore, and require a bit of know-how + soldering + a new battery to get back up and running.

UPDATE 2.30pm: Lego City Undercover publisher Warner Bros. has provided us with this short statement on the game's cartridge version, which suggests you will be able to play without downloading anything. "Players who purchase Lego City Undercover on Nintendo Switch at retail do not need to download the game to play," a company spokesperson told us. We're still no clearer why the game's box states it requires an internet connection, or 13GB of storage, but the suggestion here perhaps is that at least some of the game is playable without downloading. We've contacted Warner Bros. again for further clarification.

I'm curious about the culture of physical vs. digital download culture in Japan vs other regions, especially given what you mentioned in your latest video with the Switch soft pouch about being very crowded and not wanting to bother people by shuffling through things while on the train and the value of carrying as little as possible. I would love to see a While I'm Making Coffee video on this topic. By the way, I live in the US Pacific NW and I am a firm believer in both physical media and the value of the 2nd hand games market. It really bothers me that there are loads of games now that you simply can't buy physical copies of. I understand that for virtual console, but other than that, I wish there was a physical option for all other games. I know that many smaller and indie devs prefer digital only because it's more accessible to them and they don't have the cost of cartridges to account for. Come to think of it, maybe this is part of why the cost of cartridges are being passed on to us for games by smaller devs/publishers... they have to do a digital option because more people will buy the game that way, but if they want a physical release, they have to buy the cartridges, and since they won't sell as many copies, they can't get as significant a bulk discount as a bigger publisher can for a guaranteed hit (especially since they will/would sell even fewer physical copies since they are releasing digitally to reach a wider market), so those carts cost more for them and they can't justify writing off that cost.

We're moving away from physical media as a whole so that Lego game doing this doesn't surprise me. Digital sales keep increasing while physical sales keep decreasing. Heck on xbox1 and PS4 all the disks are just over glorified download keys. The only problem I see here is that switch owners are gonna need to buy a micro SD. But most of us already knew that going in. Just based on past experiences with WiiU and 3DS.
@GreyHell2417 жыл бұрын
That is definitely a good point. I can see this being a problem for the early adopters, say in like a 6 months the regular consumer could be at approaching that moment where they would have to do Switch Roulette with their SD cards and the game they want to play. I can see Nintendo easily fixing this issue when they do a bundled release or something. According to a breakdown video the on-board memory is not permanently soldered to the unit. I think the early buyers definitely will be experiencing the 'Switch like it were a Kickstarter program; ambiguous promises in the initial announcement, vague detailing on when the system will be at it's peak performance.

Man i couldn't wait to see you post a Video, and i was not disappointed, i'd like to see more Traveling In Japan videos, also... I'd be interesting to see you use two cameras one focused on you and the other focused on your surroundings. I'm not sure what I'm really asking for but. I await your next Video. Chao!
