Hori is back with another fighting game controller and this time it's a return to the Fighting Commander Octa, but now for PS5. Comes complete with a PS5 touchpad and various design changes to suit the console, let's do a deep-dive into the clicky buttons, fancy d-pad and the flagship feature, the OCTA analog stick that tries its best to be an arcade stick. But does it live up to the promise? Let's find out.
Will you switch to the Hori Fighting Commander Octa as your new pad or arcade stick? Comment below!

You actually can remap the buttons or change the overall sensitivity of the d-pad without using a PC. There is a button on the face of the controller for this purpose. This is discussed in the physical manual that comes in the box but not in the online information as far as I could see.

NG I love the depth of your reviews! In this vid you talked a bit about the disadvantage of pad vs stick. I've always struggled to find a controller which doesn't make me feel restricted somehow. Using stick I find dashing one direction is more awkward than the other, for example. Do you have a video that talks more in depth about different controller setups and translating human mechanics efficiently? Ultimately I'm willing to invest in a top tier controller to give SF6 solid romp but not sure where to land.

I take it you get sent a number of items to review and am curious if you've found any following sequential products with improvements you've touched upon? Have you considered making physical adjustments to controllers like the ones you've mentioned and doing videos on them or is that a legal issue and not allowed? Keep the great work!!!

I have the Octa fightpad too and I play with the stick (even with my normal ps4 controller) and it works great, if it isn't working for you is cuz you're not a stick player, you're more a d-pad player, so you need a different controller like the Victrix Pro that has a better d-pad. I love the buttons and the clickiness of them as my PS4 controller can have constant missed inputs, the only problem I had is that it’s not too great for Korean Backdashing and had a lot of FHCF missed inputs as well (crucial for a King main) maybe I just suck at using this controller though 😂 My buddy likes it for playing GG Strive though, and It does feel nice playing claw-hand on it as well. Example i never thought of using triangle, circle R1, and R2 instead of the "legacy" square, cross. That game changing for me cause it feels like my rest postion is more around the circle than the cross ! i will train this the week. I'm thinking of remapping cross an square to direction (up and jump or maybe left and right) either to have acces to dash backdash or to help fuzzy guard. Thanks !

Thanks for putting so much effort into these controller videos, they are great to see. I wanted to share with you something you may want to try yourself when playing fighting games on the steam deck. I've been experimenting with the left track pad as I find the built-in dpad a little uncomfortable when playing hand held. I currently have the track pad set as "Directional Pad" with the "requires click" option off, this allows me to slide my thumb around for QC, HC, DP inputs with ease. I've also disabled the up input and assigned it to left track pad click so I can avoid accidental jumps. Give it a try, I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. Keep up the awesome informative content!

This kind of d-pad is suposed to be used with that rocking motion, like you would do with a stick. Some old Sega Genesis pads actually had a threaded hole in the middle so you could screw a small arcade stick into it. I'd say stick to the dpad (no pun intended xd) on 2d games and use the analog octa stick for the 3d ones.

Honestly if they just combine the raion construction with this design it would be a best fight pad. I prefer the weight of the raion, as well clickiness and size of the raion dpad much better, and the version with the pivot works well. I actually like this pad having the gate on analog too, because I actually do a lot of my special moves with the analog and switch back to dpad for movement (not ideal I know, but my special inputs are way faster and easier to do accurately in panic/scramble situations). I ride the gate like you mentioned so I don't drop inputs so it works for me in that sense, but the reason I use the dpad for movement is because I have trouble locking down back instead of down or back for blocking and fuzzy guarding. I would like larger divits for that reason rather than the one you mentioned. It's almost the perfect pad for me.

Depending on your platform you can do some interesting stuff. On PC you could do pretty much anything that a stick or hitbox can do on a keyboard. It might be a bit odd to start with, but if you already play keyboard and mouse games then you can just map the keys to WASD (and maybe space bar for the jump button, so that both hands can press it) for movement and your choice of keys for attacks with the other hand. I did have an idea for a game called "keyboard warriors" that was a fighter designed for keyboard. Essentially the idea was to allow the player to map any move to any button on the keyboard, so you could essentially play it like a regular game, or set up macros to make certain things easier to accomplish. I don't think it would be balanced, but I think that there's an interesting metagame of how many things you set up as a one button move, how you lay them out, and whether the player has the ability to accurately locate and press the button in order to react to the opponent.

One reason that some people switch to stick over pad is because of how often and easy it is to accidentally jump/jump forward/jump backward when attempting a quarter circle/half circle. Jumping when you don't intend to in a fighting game can be a dire mistake that will almost always be punished when facing a skilled player. I have an Xbox controller I used on PC that I modified to add ticks at the left and right, so I could feel that I was going too far during a half circle.

When you press 41236 really fast, the switching still trigger previous input even if you think have release the position so at some point when you are at 2, the controller still see you have pressed 4 (because 1 = 4+2) so when you go to 3 the game see 4+2+6 and register that like a 3. The result is you skip 2 because it never know about 2 alone . The way to fix this is maybe SOCD implemantation in the firmware (4+6 = neutral) like stickless or switchs which are more faster to release the input.

skipping down is really a big problem for advanced motion like super in kof xv or guilty gear strive. The game is ok for normal half circle if you miss the down input. But when you need two half circle in a row, it's require the down input because otherwise no super and instead you only get the special attack :(

Thanks for mentioning the down input. I have both a modded v1 and new Raion (w pivot). On both, my execution seems fine for half circles, but I do seem to miss my down blocks and attacks alot more often. I'm coming from an 8bitdo m30, so I thought maybe it was bc the dpad is tighter. But maybe there's something off w/ the down input as you mentioned.

@@tobylee1170 i plan to mod the razer to figure out if it's can be fixed by SOCD. Not an easy task but if manage to achieve that i will tell you the result. it will take time though and it's risky (mod the pcb). But as you said the down input is really an issue. I still like the pad since i play dnf duel mainly but for kof and sf6...

I think the Sega Saturn USB pad works best if you're looking for something like this especially because the top and bottom rows of buttons have a distinctive feeling separating kicks and punches.

I got this just because for ps5 I still prefer my razoro ps4 controller because the d bad is clickly I like click d pads over mushy mushy just feels so stiff and less responsive but i feel like im force to use this because their no other pad option yes I can use my may flash and plug in my razor but the set up and wires are not simply I like the plug in play feeling. I cant wait until a button pad is mad for ps5

I really like the dpad of this controller personally. However I'm pretty disappointed with the stick. I used to play melee and was excited of the idea of a responsive octagonal gate joystick on a controller with 6 face buttons but I wouldn't get this if you're looking to primarily use the joystick

Thank you for putting out another video of this controller, but in the PS5 version. I hope Hori see this video and do take your suggestion into consideration of a Pro version of this controller. I do like the micro-switches buttons, but not so much of the other things on this controller as you mentioned in the video. D-pad is a bit too small for my liking. Make the d-pad a bit bigger, and whatever micro-switches in the buttons, put that in the d-pad. Put the micro-switches in the shoulder buttons as well. I don't use the joystick as much, but those who do would appreciates Hall-Effect sensors as that's the new wave on the market. I don't mind paying extra in exchange for a better overall controller that is durable and a joy to play with. Gamers are tired of going through controllers that feels cheap and don't last.

I bought it two years ago or so when it came out and I returned it. It was disappointing because the previous version of the Hori Fighting Commander (the 2016) was perfect in terms of design and how the D-pad felt. It took the popular Mad Catz SFIV fight pad design (basically a sega genesis controller) and slimmed it down a bit and added two extra shoulder buttons, which was great since the Mad Catz stopped making theirs and you couldn't find them. The new version, the OCTA, changed this design completely, the d-pad feels completely different as well as the buttons. It's very similar to Razer and Victrix "Fight controllers", which just feels like an aftermarket controller with microswitches and not one that is designed specifically for fighting games.

I actualçly moding this controller to have keybord mechanical mouse switches in the place of the membrane in the DPAD and it's actually FANTASTIC! Its very very sensitive, precise, FAST and effortless to do the inputs... The funny thing is that its the SAME king of switches the Hori Octa use for the buttons. I don't understand WHY they didn't do it or why they don't go for it from factory 🤷‍♂

In SF6 you can now map L3/R3 (and possibly touchpad) to an attack button) As far as CPT (Capcom pro tour) goes you can't have double buttons. You'd have to set it to something that isn't an action button but then you lose one action or physically disable the button. ---- Attacking Action The maximum number of input systems that can be used as attacking actions is eleven(11). However, the same offensive action cannot be assigned to multiple input systems. For example, it is not allowed to have more than one light punch button. When using a controller with more than eleven(11) input systems for attacking actions, measures must be taken in advance to disable the use of unnecessary input systems as attacking actions. Note that the above does not apply to input systems that cannot be used as inputs for attacking actions in the "Controller Settings" in the game (DualSense PS button, mute button, etc.).

Have the xbox version. Love it. It's my main controller for fighting games and 2D platformers. Dpad feels great, though it might be a bit stiff. That never really bothered me all that much, but I know others dislike it. I think the octa stick is best used for charge characters, though that could just be me. I haven't really messed around with it all that much. This controller aside, have you heard of the Victrix Pro BGF controller that should be coming out next month? It's a modular controller that have a separate 6 button layout specifically for fighting games. I know you've tried the last Victrix controller and I'm wondering how did you feel about the dpad, particularly the diamond layout attachment? Out of all the reviews I've seen, you're the only one who talked about the dpad and to great length. I'd like to see if that controller can not only be a great pro controller, but also an amazing fightpad as well.
