First honest/decent review I’ve seen on these. Well done. For us in the uk, the minimal lug depth just doesn’t add up. Along with a more voluminous toe box. Will wait for the mk2 release I think.

Ordered some, sending them back. Felt waaay to stiff out the box. Recently bought 2 pairs of Wildhorse 8, that is a fantastic shoe and the react foam is really well suited to trails

I also have two pairs of the Wildhorse 8s I used both on the beacons way in extreme conditions in the mountains and I love them! I’m a big fan of the react form 👍🏼

That’s the point. It has to be stiff, since it has to launch you with the carbon plate. As you break it in, the carbon plate will be less stiff, but it will still give you that extra bounce.
@danielmoll-morgan9961 Жыл бұрын
I was really uncertain on my first run with them. I've logged about 60k now. Anything technical feels not so stable as the foam feels like it would allow a nice ankle role. Man made or simple compact trails with not too much incline (the carbon plate doesn't allow too much flex) work really well though, they've run in well and I've used them on canicross interval sessions on man made trails < 3:00 min per k and I really really appreciate the cushioning and the plate and feel like they've come into their own. I think they a very good at a very specific type of trail but versatility isn't there like the Hoka Tecton X for example.

Great review Loyd. Took these for a 25 miler on Sunday, straight out the box. I was really impressed - zero issues with fit, extremely comfortable and drained very well (as it tipped down continuously!). Coming from a Norda 002, definitely less traction but an increase in comfort. You are spot on with lug depth, bizarre decision to not go with 4mm+ for grip & longevity, but if it’s not too muddy then it’s not an issue. They also stayed impressive white despite the trail crud which can only put down to witchcraft!

I just did a 6 mile mixed trail run around my local nature reserve! Muddy woodland sections, sand dunes and a few lane sections! I’m definitely not using these on my ultra Sunday! First thing I noticed was pain in my left foot arch! Which did disappear. After my run I’ve noticed some pain in both my Achilles tendons! I’m slightly disappointed also! Great review as always thanks 🙏🏼

Good review. I had the same feeling with numb toes on my first run. The numbness disappeared after a while but only by adjusting the laces a few times. If you have another USD250 to splurge, it would be great to compare the UltraFly with the North Face Vectiv Summit Pro. Also a long distance super shoe but with 6mm offset (32/26) and a less stiff 3D carbon plate.

Since we first saw this shoe a year or so ago, maybe that's the reason it took so long to release it. It takes that long to break them in. Everyone that has tried these has panned them. Nikes in general over the past couple of years have had very few "home runs". I mean, they make a pretty cool casual shoe. Appreciate your time, and the review.
@paulmillar6919 Жыл бұрын
Nice and honest review. I dont think i will ever plump for a carbon plated trail shoe. Like lots of groundfeel. The lug depth wouldnt have been an issue for me, i can deal with that, infact picked up the Nnormal Kjerag which only has 3.5mm lugs, lucky enough i can rotate with my deeper lugged tail shoes (appreciate thats not an option for all).
@Trackdayist Жыл бұрын
I love mine. I’d say they feel more like a Nike Invincible than a Vaporfly, but that’ll really come into its own on ultra distance events. Loyd is right though, 3mm lugs don’t work on mud! Great on gravel and tarmac though. At £200 (with discount code) I hope they last!
@sheps9402 Жыл бұрын
Another great review Loyd. Do you think they would perform better at quicker speeds, the same as the Nike performance shoes come alive on quicker efforts. As an aside, do you ever review any Puma road or trail shoes? They seem to be getting good reviews and are much more sensibly priced than many shoes out there. Keep up the good work and best of luck at the weekend.

jeez, 230... i've just bought a pair of asics fuji lite 3s for €75. different animal and aimed at different trails for sure, but at least i know i didn't fall for another hyped up nike superfoam shoe. but i've got some lugs beneath me.
@TheHutchRuns Жыл бұрын
Great video Loyd, Nike seem to be dropping the ball an awful lot recently, Vaporfly Next% 3 isn't as good as Next% 2 (in my opinion) and this shoe is just so expensive and for that money you'd want it for all trail running including mud!

As commented on Tim Grose's review, I'm returning the Ultrafly's - I tried them out on a short 10k trail but have decided that i can't justify the cost versus the versatility of the shoe plus, they're way too heavy (Im a size 10) - going to purchase the Edge, UK Winters can get pretty muddy rendering this shoe next to useless on the trails. Shame as they look nice and they're very comfortable. They'd make really comfy outdoor slippers though :)
@TimGrose Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the shout out. The weight for my large feet (370g in a UK 13) I found was the biggest limiter and also with a relatively narrow foot they are voluminous in the toebox for me. Widest shoe I have I think. Both those factors took out any feeling of agility for me and the weight kind of deadens most of the "comfort" as then I just felt they are hard work on "off road" surfaces I tend to think I can get away with less cushioning not more.
@wanderer6688 Жыл бұрын
Great review Loyd. No toe bumper is a big thing and white is a stupid colour for a trail shoe in the UK. I normally love Nike shoes but will give this one a miss.

FWIW, I use these as my “fast” road shoes and I love them. I also got them for like $60-$70 off on sale though lol.
@Run4Adventure6 ай бұрын
That’s great but it’s a pretty bad trail shoe and that’s what it’s designed for 🤷♂️ There’s also way better fast road shoes, like Nike’s Vapourfly Next % 2 which you can pick up for a good price now! 👍 The Ultrafly is to heavy to be a fast road shoe and you must shred that Vidram outsole on the road 🤔
@javieriglesias6556 Жыл бұрын
I also went out on my first run in the Ultrafly. I did a 5 miler with a mix of both road and light trails. The bottom of my feet started to ache after a couple of miles, I guessing this may have been because I was running on tarmac for the first half of the run. On the trails the shoe performed better than on the road. I also think the shoe may need to soften up a little with a couple more runs! Really appreciate your honest feedback!
@Run4Adventure Жыл бұрын
The aching feet is probably caused by the stiffness of the shoe straight out the box. Obviously there's a lot of ZoomX compound and a very stiff carbon plate in the midsole. I had a very similar feel over the first couple of miles but it did settle down and it didn't happen at all on my second run 👍

They really should of split the outsole up- balancing exposed foam with vibram(think Xodus for example). Too rigid with one big slab of vibram. (Especially with rigidity from plate already) It would have lightened it possibility too. Lugs at minimum should be 3.5….but like mentioned 4 for versatility. This shoe is just specific to one type of terrain/race.

What I like is that the sole is fully covering and protecting the foam from below. I hate cutouts, even if they save weights on some shoes. The wide toe box is also attractive. The New Balance Fuelcell SuperComp TRAIL version will soon be available and is a strong contender. Looking forward to your impressions, both are also quite similar and could be compared. Also comparable: the price. :P
@Pipppetto Жыл бұрын
Shallow toebox sounded like music until you defined it as the widest in the Nike trail lineup... (Actually "widest" came in first, so I already watched the whole review just to know if it had another substantial drawback). Anyway, at that price point, a shoe has to be perfect, to say the least. My personal 2c, of course !

Definitely designed for the US trails. Tyler Green used them for Western States, and they're pretty perfect for that. Definitely agree that it's a little different to a British winter, though!
@matthewmyers7826 Жыл бұрын
He also wore them at Tiger Claw (steep and some mud), will be interesting to see if he wears them at UTMB. Kind of like the old school trail runners just wore road shoes. Still baffling why they'd choose such a limiting lug depth, probably to keep the already heavy weight down.
@Thefifaplayeryant Жыл бұрын
That's the point, shoe leans towards faster running on rolling terrain, in more technical or wet and boggy ("british") conditions, they will fail. But lug depth and overall usage is in line with Tecton X, Salomon Pulsar Trail Pro and the likes of...

How does the ZoomX midsole perform compared to the midsole on the Zegama? I hated that midsole it was so firm and dense. Not comfortable at all. The price is a joke but my god it looks good! I have the Zegama (dry flat terrain) and Wildhorse 8 (mixed terrain). Enjoy both of them. But my one complaint is the shallow toe box. Width is perfect. Sounds similar to the ultra fly. Don’t think I’m inclined towards carbon plates for my trail shoes as tempting as it might be.

Nike basically created the road shoe people have been asking for but added some trail capabilities and weight and gave us a trail shoe no one really wanted.
