It's kind of funny how you said it's difficult to find the right focusing spot because of the long focus throw. The long focus throw is what makes that necessary precision possible in the first place. But I'm glad you finally get the point of the lens. It's aimed at a _very_ specific small group of rich people that already know they want it and don't mind or even prefer the manual aspect of it. Knowing they're going to miss a lot of shots, but knowing the ones that _are_ good are going to be amazing. I know that if I had the money and hadn't switched to Sony, I'd buy this. I _love_ using vintage lenses actually designed for manual focus, and this is basically a modern vintage lens and literally meant to be a modern embodiment of the 58mm f/1.2 Noct.

Ok, when using manual focus + focus peaking. I map the AF ON button (found in f2 menu) to Magnify 200%. Solves all the issues of dialing in what you are focusing on. There are a few other buttons you can map Magnify as well.

For years and years Nikon was blamed that couldn't create an f/1.2 lens like Canon had done with 50mm and 85mm lenses of 2006. Nikon had a very very old manual 50mm f/1.2 of 1978 though. Now that Nikon has created a 58mm f/0.95 everyone says that it is a pointless move. If you check an online depth of field calculator, the depth of field of a 58mm f/0.95 is much deeper than the depth of field of a very common 85mm f/1.4 lens. So the depth of field of a 58mm isn't so thin, unusable and pointless as many suggest. Of course the 58mm f/0.95 is a very expensive but Zeiss Ottus lenses and some Leica lenses are expensive and manual too. The 58mm f/0.95 is manual focus but it is designed for mirrorless cameras which make manual focus much easier with focus peaking and auto focus magnification. Only very lately with life-view a few models of dSLR cameras offer these two aids. Also the 58mm f/0.95 is heavy at 2000g but the classic Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 is 1500g and isn't considered a very heavy lens.

Depth of Field (DoF) calculators typically abstract away from the "Circle of Confusion" (CoC). DoF is a function of focal length, aperture and distance variables, but includes the CoC parameter. CoC ties resolution of camera & lens to presentation size and the viewer's distance to the presentation. Increase resolution of a lens and the DoF gets shallower. Increase camera resolution and it gets shallower again. Blow up and DoF gets shallower because of the decrease in CoC. Watch from a closer distance and the DoF gets shallower again. In Digital photography, one important piece of the puzzle has to be added into the CoC and that's the software you use in raw processing, its ability to recover detail, your sharpening setting. I have tried different apps as DoF calculator and changing parameters that should impact the CoC and from that the DoF, had no visible impact on the numbers. Big influence on the camera part of the CoC is if it has an anti-aliasing (AA) filter. This disperses a bit of the light traveling to photosite [x,y] to the neighbors thereof. That increases the CoC, reduces dynamic range and low light sensitivity, reduces color space, and provides a tool for total reflection over the sensor in strong backlight. But it makes "raw processing" easier - SOOC JPEG as well as in post raw processing in LrC or C1. As the AA filter adds to the tiny tunnel over each photosite, it also adds to vignetting and modern "for digital" lens designs solve this by projecting the image in a different way than was normal in the past. Regarding the latter, Nikon was handicapped with its age-old F lens mount. A larger diameter would enable a wider diameter lens back-end that projects the image to the sensor in a way that suffers less from filter grid vignetting and light losses. This is the back story of Leica's problems to go full frame and at the same time retain top quality backward compatibility with their excellent but very old lens design so appreciated by collectors. They only went full frame when they had developed a filter overlay (Bayer & AA) that behaves like a Fresnel condenser where the rings are replaced by lens staves at varying angles from the center point of the sensor to the corners - one per photosite. The angle pattern must be a compromise between different lens designs, though. It did not scale well to significantly higher than 24 MP, though, and so they must have aborted this concept for, say 60MP cameras. As an M Monochrom does not need a Bayer filter grid, it can also do away with the AA filter and then it doesn't need "raw processing". Can you imagine how cheap that camera should be when you take these complexities out? As to the 1.2L lenses by C.anon, I have to point to the f/number being worthless in indicating how much light comes through. DxO Mark tell us that these lenses have a T-stop of 1.5 when at f/1.2. Well, a Nikon 1.4 would have a T-stop of 1.5 too. And be sharper. The f/number represents the diameter or radius of the aperture (opening) in the diaphragm as a fraction of a lens's focal length. That focal length is only valid at infinity focus setting and the number in f/number is just geometry. In the past, "we" took these things into account when we shot 8"*10" or even medium format - in absence of through the lens metering we needed to know the exposure corrections from lens to lens and be able to apply an exposure compensation for "bellows extension" (focusing closer by than infinity). The 1.2L lenses are not very sharp and their attraction is their softness more than anything else. If you made the elements in these lenses of black glass, by the way, they would still be f/1.2. In short, as to DoF, if you really want to seriously compare between lenses, you have to take identical shots and figure out their individual CoC for the presentation size and viewing distance you want to use. Look at your shots on a 4K display at 12" (30cm) distance at 200% and your DoF may seem shallow. Print at 5"*7" and view that at 2' (60cm) distance (arm's length) and you don't understand why the DoF is so deep all of a sudden. If you know of a DoF calculator that does all this properly, let me know. I did not find one. After all, it should include all these aspects in order to be relevant and valid.

That "secret door" is for attaching a locking cable to the lens, either for when you're using the lens on a remote camera and or as an anti-theft deterrent for a store or display. All of the newly released professional Nikon lenses have this from the 70-200mm f2.8 VR "S" to all of the FL super-telephoto lenses, like my 400mm f2.8 FL. I have personally never used this feature, because I don't use my 400mm f2.8 FL for a remote lol, but some people do once in a while like at the super-bowl or the Olympics!

This is like the Nikon 800mm. Very few will actually own it because it has a very specific use case but when you use it for that very specific use case, its hard to beat. Lenses like this are similar to cinema lenses used to film hollywood movies. Arri and Angenieux primes can easily be $50,000 to purchase with zoom versions being closer to $100K. Very few people (ie production companies) own the huge, expensive, cinema lenses. If they need one, they get one from a rental house. Unless you have a very specific use case for the Noct, and you can make your money back with it, just rent it when you need it. As far as use case goes, I would say still life, commercial/product, and video. The long focus throw on this is very similar to cinema lenses, giving you the ability to very precisely dial in your focus. Also, with the super long focus throw and 1.6' minimum focus, I'd be interested to see what people can do with focus stacked images

Owning 4 0.95 lenses, 3 1.2 lenses and 1 0.75 lens. never regretted it to get them. you can do insane portraits/images with it. it's almost addicting to shoot with them. but seems like the Noct is also meant for cinematographers. because of the long focus throw and clickless aperture ring.

Used one at a store. You really need that focus throw and it’s super useful. I’ve never used cinema lenses, but it was explained to me that this long throw is helpful for manual focus and I agree from using a few lenses with that mindset. Going back to 24-70 f/2.8 S lens using manual was not as tactile or precise (which it didn’t need to be on the Z7 with AF imo).

Someone else may have pointed this out, but actually 50...errr...59mm isn't a bad focal length for astrophotography. You can get the whole constellation of Orion in 50mm and should be able to in 59mm. Large aperture means less time tracking and or less time holding the shutter open building up heat or having a higher ISO causing more noise.

Actually that lens is a dream - for a cinematographer or anyone familiar with cinema lenses. A long focus throw, a declicked (in this case electric) aperture mechanism and a low f-stop. It does however lack some features of a real cine lens like a ring for a follow focus system to attach or the lens aperture measurement being t-stop. As a photography lens it is quite heavy and long. I actually don't care that it is manual focus only, I am fairly happy with my vintage Pentax 50mm f/1.7 lens which is manual focus only as well. Focus peaking makes manual focusing very easy.

Nobody is buying this lens. Lens still sold out. Nikon can't keep it in stock. Has a lot of back orders. It's too long for landscapes and stargazers...for someone saying "if everyone goes right, try to go left" Many people shoot using 100mm for Landscapes. Cropping in (in-camera) to 1.5x gives you a super sharp portrait lens at .95 I'm very curios Jared, doubt that you'll even read this but while you had the 58mm Noct did you flip it around to shoot macro? I get that manual focusing is tough for you so maybe use a bellows for macro. All in all, and I mean no harm in saying this but between yourself and a good two handful of other KZbin photographers, you guys limit the hell out of your creativity with the gear/tools you use. There's a shit ton of things that were used 60yrs ago that you guys could still use today.

As always, you gave the lens a good review. Put things aside and showed different scenarios. Looks like a great lens, you said the colours are great. Even though I personally have the lowest end Nikon, I love the colours I get out of my camera. I can’t afford to buy that lens. If I did, and had a studio then I might. I’d like to see more video with this, more photos showing apertures down to f:/16. Sharpness is amazing when you get it just right. Because of the size of the lens, it looks like a significant jump in sharpness as each aperture is implemented so it is very sensitive that way. I always enjoy your reviews

If it functions like a cinema lens, is priced like a cinema lens then it is a cinema lens. I think this lens is pretty out of water on this channel considering ( I think ) that this is a still photography centric channel. It definitely received unneeded hate from the stills community because this lens isn’t catered for them. It’s a video lens and with the awesome video of the Z6 it makes sense when you put those two together on a full video rig. If you look at the price and think “yikes” then it’s not for you.

"Who is this lens for?" Professional cinematographers. They DON'T need autofocus, they DO need exceptional image quality and they also DO have the money to burn. It gives them something that they have never had before. Also studio photographers for really high end editorials and stuff. Of course you wouldn't go shoot birds and action with this thing, what are you talking about?? To support my point, look at the canon 50mm 1.3 cinema lens. It costs 4k$ and also does not offer autofocus. Why? because it is aimed towards big studios that can afford that kind of glass and don't give a lot of fucks about autofocus. It's really obvious that Nikon is trying to get into the pro video and cinema game. And this lens is exactly that: an attempt to get some bigger guys pay attention to Nikon.

This is a one-off.

@@JonPais As Much as i agree with your point, I would like you to think about the possibility for a second here. Yes, it doesn't have gears, or a TStop value, but if you are a filmmaker wanting to have Raw video and a Cinema-Grade lens without spending too much money on a rig like that, the Z6, Atomos Ninja V and this lens can give you a fairly comparable image to some dedicated cinema rigs. you can map the control ring to aperture to have a Iris ring, the L-Fn button can be mapped to Magnification. Frankly, i think after a while, with updates and tweaks to the workflow, This can be a pretty serious option for budget Filmmaking.

Book Phile actually, for thousands less, you can get a BMD Pocket cinema camera with 12-bit RAW that is superior in every way to Nikon’s, use a Veydra or Sigma or any lens at all. The Noct is a huge waste of money. For the same price, I can pick up a Cooke.

@@JonPais The BlackMagic Pocket is not even in any way comparable to a z6. The Black Magic cameras are all specs and zero usability. The z6 is a hybrid, it can shoot raw video and raw images. Why is this lens great for video, because of the long throw manual focus. This is the only manual focus z lens. But really "BMD Pocket cinema camera with 12-bit RAW that is superior in every way to Nikon" I know for sure you have never used either camera. People buying this lens do astro. That is what it was built for. Hence Noct(urnal). They built it to get light sources like stars to show up perfectly round even when shooting the lens wide open. Which apparently is very hard to engineer in a lens. I would have opted for the 1.4 and 1.2 lenses though as well.

Jared Polin FroKnowsPhotooooo but clearly not much on astrophotography. It is not always go as wide as you can. With 58mm you get more compression which means you can get the stars to appear closer/bigger. For example those who enjoy shooting milky way shots, can get it looking bigger and denser. At 58mm, going by the 500 rule, you can do about 8 seconds of exposure before the stars start trailing. Usually this means bumping up the iso, but here is where F0.95 helps. Not saying the price tags is now totally justifiable but it is definitely great for astrophotography. In fact astrophotgraphy was the first thing I thought about when this lens was even announced.
@lizards821

Widefield nightscape astrophotographer here (whatever that means). This lens makes zero sense for star stuff. At 0.95 there is bound to be a good amount of astigmatism and coma, making for some very unattractive stars. I am just assuming here, but it would probably do best stopped to 1.4 or 2.8 like most other lenses for astro. That said, you can just scoop up a Sigma 50 1.4 ART which is a stellar performer at handling star distortion for less than a G. Add in a good star tracker like the iOptron Skyguider Pro, you are still looking at $6,500 less than the Noct for this outstanding astro setup. Oh yeah and now you would have a star tracker, which is one of the most crucial pieces of equipment for doing astro. This setup has much more capable than just a Z6 and the Noct lens for example.

So do you understand now why it's manual focus? Not only would it make the already massive lens even bigger, but determining focus at f/0.95, especially up close, is kind of subjective. I shoot manual focus lenses pretty regularly, and like you I have less-than-stellar eyesight. I've personally found that I get the best results by skipping the viewfinder altogether and using the back screen, zooming in on my focus point. It's a bit sow and clunky for sure, but i makes it so much easier to nail focus, even at f/1.2 (which is the fastest lens I own) and I absolutely love the results I get by doing it.

Lots of people assume from the name that this is the successor to the original 58mm f/1.2 Noct lens. I disagree. This new f/0.95 lens is the successor to the 13mm f/5.6. Both are massive, both are massively expensive, both are largely impractical for every day shooting, but both allow you to make shots that no other lens is capable of. With both of these lenses, the success of the design isn't in sales figures, it's in the engineering that went into them that showed up in other lenses. And if the current crop of Z-mount lenses owes any of their outstanding performance to the new Noct, I'd say it's already a huge success.

I think Jared missed one of the biggest reason to use the Noct. I remember back when shooting film. I went out and shot a model using 400 ISO film and the Leica Noctilus in the middle of the night using just a tall street lamp for a light source... HAND HELD! Yes the lens is heavy but I'll bet Jared could have hand held that camera in a very dark scene and kept all the color and contrast, sharpness, that no other lens could handle without boosting the ISO to something really grainy.

Would have been better to have a rear focus mount, because, 82 mm filters cost an arm and a leg (good ones), but then if you buy this lens, you probably don't care about the cost of filters. Personally I would go to ebay or a good retailer and look for a mint original 58mm f/1.2 Noct for half the price of this, far lighter in weight, but absolutely gorgeous to use with incredible coma suppression right to the edges (which I have used, and subsequently lusted after!) If you can't afford a Noct (old or new), the 50mm f/1.2 AIS is still made and a beautiful lens too. Built like a tank and full of character. But, of course, as the original 58mm 1.2 Noct was and still is a lusted after lens, this new one had to be even better, so of course, Nikon went to break the hallowed f/1 barrier, which could have been predicted. This lens is going to be used by Astro photographers, product and studio portrait photographers, and is going to live on a tripod much of the time. Also when you really want the best possible background blur in a shot, especially as it has so many aperture blades compared to most that have 7-9 blades. But, manual focus is very important for a lens like this because cracking focus when it's going to be as thin as a razor blade out to a fair distance at f/0.95, you need a huge focus throw to get it tack sharp

@@libork8106 meh, Dude Nikon created a mount capable of mounting 99% of lenses from any manufacturer including F-mount glass. If you need a certain focal length from Nikon go get the proper adapter and lens combo. Your next comment will be well doesn't that defeat the purpose of having a Mirrorless camera, small, light, etc. Bro the adapters are the size of table coasters super thin. You're in your own way. Nikon freed everyone from proprietary lenses on the Z system. Sony has a shit ton of good glass, Tamron and Sigma have amazing new glass that's super cheap. For the time being go buy what you actually need then once the new lens becomes available, pre-order it early and put the other lens on sale. That comment I see a lot is pointless. That 58mm .95 Noct is literally every lens you want that isn't wider than 58mm. The Noct is distortion free, handles flares and direct light insanely well. If you purchased a Nikon Z7 which this lens imo is perfect for currently, you have the ability to turn this 1 58mm manual lens into a 500mm+ lens and shoot 20x30 images at 490mm once cropped in. Jared says he doesn't crop in after shooting, which is fine. Here's the cool thing about modern DSLR (D3 does it just fine) and Mirrorless cameras. Turn on LV on a Nikon DSLR or Focus Peaking on a Mirrorless. Zoom in to frame your shot especially with a high megapixel beast like the Z7 and you'll realize how to shoot this lens as more than just a point and shoot. Lenses have potentials that people don't even scratch due to lazy or depressive behaviors. The benefit from a pro body DSLR is the audio recording you can put on a shot. Ex. Crop image very tight on subject face include neck. The thing about shooting astro shots he spoke on, like hey shouldn't you be using a wider lens well doesn't that depend on your current elevation. Lmao like omg 😂 If you have 1 lens just walk around. The Noct will also hold its value for decades DECADES. The 60mm focal length and especially in this lens creates 4 lenses in one just from the base level of talking about it. Portrait, Astro, Macro, Landscape It's the highest quality optical lens ever created.
@dct124

@Chris dude if you think a lens is just for bokeh while that's your opinion you don't understand how to use the lens. If you put this lens at .95 and open it to infinity, do you understand how sharp your image will be? Also if you're shooting portraits with this lens, why would you want to shoot at .95 for shallow dof? If you want the best bokeh then you have to stop it down to 1.4 or 1.8. The secret to most lens apertures is that you have to stop it down at least once to get it's sharpest point. Ex. A 1.2 lens, stopped down to 1.4. or a 1.4 lens stopped down to 1.8 will give you the sharpest image and best bokeh character. Now newer lenses especially have nearly resolved this but it's still true. However with the Noct it's sharp all over at all apertures. .95 is for LIGHT control first. Bokeh is the last thing someone should be worried about in this lens or any lens. Bokeh is a selling point channels throw at people to buy faster glass. The reason you'd buy this lens is due to it's insane control over light. 5lbs isn't heavy. The crazy thing about this lens is it's not targeted toward general consumer's. It's targeted at the Leica users imo and landscapers, which is why the Z mount adapts Leica and every other brand to it. It's quadruple purpose lens. It's meant to go on a Z7 so if you don't have that why would it be a concern? Oh well I want this other lens. Like the other guy, simply buy an adapter for the lens you need not want the one you need to get paid from. If it's a 50mm F2 Summicron, or 90mm G Master Macro or Canon 24mm Tilt shift lens. Nikon gave you a mount that you're only using 20% of its potential on. Why buy a Z camera if you're not going to take advantage of it? These lenses with Nikon colors would be crazy. Like I said to the other guy, once the Z lens you want is available, just sell the equivalent. It's like you guys think some new lens that isn't even available is somehow going to transform your photography. It won't, that's a fact. Currently Nikon has covered all ranges for the Z glass on it's consumer cameras Z6, Z7, Z 50. These bodies are not pro bodies so keep that in mind. As for the current glass that's out simply put them up against the lens you think you want. Want more bokeh, get a longer lens, step back and shoot, that's how you work around not having what you want. The Z glass is just different from other lenses.
@dct124

@@paulf3353 How is it less price depreciation? That's not a fact and the Nikon Noct is superior to the Leica, Mitakon and Voitlander unless you're blind or something and the Leica is over $4k more. Seriously factually explain how the Leica lens is superior. Currently the Nikon 58mm Noct does things no lens regardless of price can do with light control. Size is the only valid compromise but if you don't shoot manual which most don't this lens was never for you. It's def not for me. But its sold out and still has a shit ton of back orders. So as for demand, its definitely a highly sought after lens.
