The Nikon Coolpix P900 looks like a great camera I just wish Nikon was making them available to customers in the UK. Launched here in March but since then almost no supplies. Amazon say 'delivery 1 to 3 months' but they've been saying that for months so clearly just a guess, and now they have change it to simply 'Currently unavailable we don't know when or if this item will be back in stock' ! Some specialist camera sites are taking pre-orders but with no idea when they will have stocks and one has now posted a red banner across the page saying that 'Due to issues with Nikon securing stock for the UK we will not be able to supply this camera until September / October 2015' And I have to wonder how sure they are even of that prediction as no-one seems to know what is happening with supplies. I've pre-ordered with a company that wants only a nominal deposit which seems fairer but none of them have any idea when Nikon will ship any cameras to fill even the pre-orders. I know Nikon issued an apology back in May but that was 6 weeks ago surely they must have some idea what is happening and IF they are still actually manufacturing, and it has to be a big IF, then surely they should have some schedule of shipments and so be able to say when the UK Nikon dealers will be getting their share of whatever units are being made. The fact that they haven't makes me think the reason is that, despite the predictable denials, there is some serious technical fault which they are endeavouring to rectify before shipping more units. Why else the near total lack of stock worldwide and the deafening silence re future deliveries.So, who knows, by the time they get it rectified and in production one of the other makers will have something even better about to launch. There is talk of a 100 x zoom Canon Powershot for 2016.

+Yaser Kelany Hello there! Thanks for your question. If it's between the P900 and the D5500, I'd pick the D5500. If only because the best part of the P900 is the epic zoom; and if you're mostly going to use it for portraits you're not going to need that.

i am actually thinking of either getting this (Nikon p900) or canon sx60hs or maybe Nikon D3300. which one do you think i should get? the great thing about p900 and sx60hs is the zoom feature which i dont know if im going to use either than to shoot a picture of the moon or to get an 'entry-level' DSLR which i assume of a better image quality. However, if i were to get either p900 or sx60hs, the sx60hs offer a RAW image format (i think i might need that 'feature' in the future but not anytime soon) and Nikon p900 seem to give better image quality, better optical zoom (83x??!!) than the canon sx60hs, but no RAW format. so please help me decide! you seem to be an expert in choosing camera. i am interested in maybe nature photography, or to use the camera for family vacation and maybe gatherings and events. i love looking at the sky (and hence why i think i should get an ultra zoom camera just to take a photo of the moon now and then - seen some videos on youtube capturing the mooon using these ultra zoom cameras). i thought i wanted a DSLR (D3300 nikon) but then again its kinda hard to trade off the zoom features Thank youu in advancee!

Septimus Yes, you can. :) It works very well, the level of detail that the zoom provides is spectacular. It has a pretty nice image stabilisation included, so it holds up surprisingly well without a tripod if you're unsure about parting with a bit extra coin. Photography is a fun hobby/job! I hope getting into it brings you joy.

Zoe Rice Thank you for your helpful comment. It's only a little bit too late haha. I already bought the Nikon D3200, but I have no regrets. It's an excellent entry lvl DSLR for a great price I think. And so far photography has brought me joy. Only I think I should do it more ? How do you do ''photography'' haha? You just go out and take pictures ? Go to the woods and what not ? I plan on going to small concerts and just take pictures of people there, seems like a good start. Thanks again.

Oops, oh well. :D Glad you're enjoying it! Personally I just head out to spots I like and see what I can make work. There's a lot of woodland near my home, so I do take a lot of nature pictures. If I'm going anywhere interesting, like say a castle or the beach, I'll make sure to keep my camera on hand just in case I see something worth capturing. In general, photography is about being in the right place at the right time. Sometimes I can go all day at a prime location and not see anything that takes my fancy, but on the train back home I might see the sun coming through the window at JUST the right angle and hitting the row of seats in front of me and making the city outside the window look orange. Lovely urban shot. My advice is simply to take as many pictures as you can, even if you don't think it's your usual style. :) You can surprise yourself.

I've read this comment 5 times now and still don't understand, but I'll try to answer anyways. This camera has WI-FI which means you can transfer data without a cable or wire to your mobile device. You'll still need to have a memory card for it to work though.

If you were me, which one you'd prefer, buy this camera or a lens that can go to 100-400mm, i want to buy a lens, but when i think about it, there is a limitation in camera life, when it worn out, i have to change a new camera. But if i buy a p900 i don't have to think about expensive lens, bc it does it job. This camera won't be as useful as a DSLR with good lenses if you're a professional photographer, but it will indeed fill all of your needs if you're a casual photographer that cares more about what you can shoot than how good your image quality is. Extremely good for shooting birds, buildings and really almost everything as long as it is NOT moving, it will have a hard time if you shoot moving objects with it. For the zoom it is very cheap, a lens with 2000mm zoom will cost you thousands of dollars and this camera is around 500, the lenses are great, the build quality feels normal, nothing too durable nor too weak. It has a nice macro mode that allows you to shoot objects as close as 1cm to your lenses, the macro pics feel crispy and well focused, although you will need to edit them on adobe lightroom if you want more saturation and etc. Speaking about lightroom, this camera doesn't support RAW files, wich are ideal for post-editing in photography, but it doesn't matter much if you know how to shoot and keep your ISO in a ideal level. Last but not least, if you buy one, make sure to buy a ring mount to mount it directly from the lenses as the tripod mount isn't centered and thus it can crack the platform it sits in when the lenses extend, as they are heavy.

Looks like a fun camera! However, I wish camera manufacturers would stop lying about the aperture values. There is simply no way this lens gives anything even close to f5.6 at 2000mm. Those videos are real. But admittedly this camera isn't great for long exposure. It's not bad for it, just not the best around. Personally, I've seen some breathtaking images of things like the moon taken with the P900, but stars might be more difficult.

The photographer needs very steady hands, or a tripod for the higher zoom. I found focus harder to manage than depicted in this video. The details with the jpg tend to better than my DSLR using raw. That could be a camera lens or equipment issue. This is a great backup camera, but for those who use it regularly or pick up on its nuances quickly, like Ben Shaul did, it is a great camera.
