I bought one of these for my stepson. He’s 11, and had seen me shooting photography for a while, and had gotten interested. He has been shooting with his iPad Mini, so this is a big a step up! It’s absolutely the perfect camera for anybody starting out, young or old. I paid $100 for one with the kit lens, under 5,000 actuations. Great camera. Once he grows out of auto the camera of course does everything you want a DSLR to do. I shoot a Leica Q and a D610, and he has noticed that I fiddle with the lens (I mostly shoot aperture priority) when I’m shooting. I’ll teach him about aperture and shutter speed soon. The perfect teaching tool, and a cool little STEM lesson to boot.

I own a few older CCD sensor cameras, including a NIkon D40, which I picked up at a pawn shop some years ago. At the time, I knew little about CCD vs CMOS sensors, but the first time I used the D40 and snapped a few photos, I was blown away by the colors it gave me. There's a certain richness and vibrance that's simply wonderful.

Same here. Actually it was my 2001 Sanyo IdShot -way before I adquired my Nikon D40- the camera that blew my mind with incredible, rich colors. CMOS is a downgrade.

My first camera. I know it is fashionable to love these old CCD cameras, but I loved the D90 and all the CMOS cameras that followed so much more.

Yes the ccd looks filmic is absolute garbage. Im a photographer since 1976. I had one of the first CCD DSLR’s back in 2000 which was the Fujifil finepix Pro S1, also had the S2 and the S5 also the D200 and numerous compact ccd cams including a fuji e900 and a panasonic lumix DMC-LX5 and a Leica D-Lux 4, The ccd film claim is absolute arsecake!

I’ve been a Nikon man since the 80’s. I’m a commercial photographer and use a combination of D850 and occasionally a Z6ii. For fun I bought a D2H and recently the underrated CCD Nikon D200 which I owned back in 2006. For me the CCD sensor gives that filmic look which bizarrely we’re all craving today. Having used the D2H back in 2004 it’s fascinated how far the technology has evolved. 4mp sounds crazy and there’s little headroom to pull highlights and shadows but it’s fun. I once borrowed a D40 and bolted on the older Nikon 28-70afs, a brute of a lens for those that remember it which weighed more than the camera. 😊

Wow sounds like quite a wonderful career for sure ! Yes the D40 is great , the D40x really made me smile …. Recently started using the Fujifilm XT range and also enjoy the film presets

I've won comps in 2021, 2022, and 2023 with my D40x. But I'm looking at others cameras and was wondering what would be the next set up or what people are happy with as far as the DX/f mount system gose. what would people suggest?

I inherited a D40x from my dad, so it has sentimental value, as well as being a nice camera. It is my only digital SLR, and is a little big for casual use, so I am also looking for a more portable camera. Like the Panasonic FZ300. I love the D40x feel of quality, in the controls, buttons, features, but I miss having a tilt screen for macro shots. Getting a little to old for all that crouching. And I'm enjoying the picture quality very much, when viewing them on my new 70" 4K TV screen. Image details are breathtaking, and it is such a treat to see pictures and adjust them, without having to wait for them to be developed, like old school film cameras ( lol, showing my age again). Thanks for making me feel better about hanging on to my dad's old camera, instead of trading it in for a new one. Happy trails...

Got a 40x when it came out, and picked up a d40 with a lens for 35 Euros. I like them, but not for manual usage. I prefer my Pen-F, but the colours from the CCD sensor is something special. So I pick up the Nikons from time to time.

It was also my first DSLR camera coming from the Nikon FM SLR The best thing about it is that it doesn't have video, which I never use I still have mine 📷👍

Nice shots! My old D80 died this year. I just got a D200 as replacement. This is now my only CCD lens camera.

I feel like the CCD cameras are going to get more and more rare as the sensors die out :-( ! I have 3 D70s and 2 40x for this reason. I mean light room can mimic in post with a cmos for sure but ccd just warms the soul ! Congratulations on the D200. Still my fav

I have a D40X with the 18 to 70 afs 3.5 4.5 lens. High speed autofocus and very sharp.

I have a Nikon D40x with the 18 55 AFS kit lens. I use a non ai Nikon 28mm 2.8 lens on it too. 42mm equivalent . I shot a wedding on a 6 megapixel Nikon D40 in 2008 and the pictures were beautiful. I used a 18 70 AFS Nikon lens and a SB 600 Nikon speedlite. The Nikon D40 synchronises flash up to 500th of a second!

boss im having d60, similar to d40/d40x can i use aperture priority with older manual focus lenses (for metering purposes..)

I had a D40X and it produced the sharpest photographs I've ever taken. I just sold a D7000 so I could buy a D80 off of KEH. I plan on purchasing another D40X and a D300 in the near future. Even if I could afford to buy the "best" camera, I wouldn't. Old gear is how I do.

Having shot with the 'Nic on' D40-X for some 14-years now, I can attest to its easy use, comfortable merits. I have acquired other high end cameras in the ensuing years, but I keep grabbing my D40-X for street, hiking and backpacking. Already having a huge assortment of old SLR lenses, I had a manual lens for any situation from Astro-photography to portrait/weddings to macro. I do think the Fujifilm CCD processor does give better color, but it is negligibly better. Thanks for this post. I will use it to help soe people that you don't have to spend a fortune to get into non-smartphone photography.

Yes you can. :-) , I have a 35, 50 and 85 prime for this and the sigma 18-38

I have one of this, could you suggest me a 35 or 50 lens? I’m a beginner and if I can measure light through lens it will be great. If I have well understood, with “vintage” lens type you haven’t zoom and measure capability, thanks!
