Hi Matt... I just bought a D7000, moving up from the Nikon 8008s & n90s. All my Nikon lenses will work great with the D7000. I got a great deal on the D7000 from Adorama and my budget couldn't get to the D7100. Thanks as always for all you great tips, tricks, techniques and reviews...always enjoy them. Cheers...

Hey Matt, I have this great piece of tech. For the exposure problem you have, it might be due the "reverse" exposure meter it has. The 2 things I don't get in it are the "preview" button and how to measure custom white balance. Keep up the good work.

Shooting with the D7100 now and I gotta say that I was pleasantly surprised to find that the mode dials didn't bother me. The top - priority selection - one is very easy to change, so I'll leave that alone. The bottom - shooting mode (single, multi, etc) - is easy enough to use my thumb & forefinger on my left hand. I much prefer the dial over the oldskool method of changing the shooting mode. coming up from the D80 - where my dial got bumped a ton - I'm happy to have the locks.

Matt, you confused me - you're saying the focal depth etc remains the same as a 300 - easy enough to understand, but does that mean in the cropped-mode image, that there is still the same megapixels going onto the sensor and coming out on the photo or is it literally a smaller photo, blown up to full size? IE: more detail in a crop from same physical distance or less?

Dual SD slots for a camera around 800$ is a unique professional feature. After all safety of the photos is the first priority of everyone. I hope Canon and Sony would include such a feature. How much extra space, weight or cost has to be sacrificed for such an important detail.

Hey Matt, can you advise me about my dilemma? I own a Nikon D90 a year and I learned a lot with him, he now has 9000 records and I would like to replace the D7100. Some people have said "are you crazy, use it more," and other people tell me, "replacing it with the D7100, the younger the better." What do you think about this? Sorry for my language, I am a Serb.

Depends what you need it for. I have a D700 and can tell you that the only things its got going for it are build quality, bigger buffer and full frame sensor. The D7100 is going to give you better image quality because its a newer sensor and has higher resolution, more features and is lighter. It's really a matter of would you rather have a smaller, more cheaply made body that will give you more detailed images and a 1.5x crop, or a better built body with still great image quality.

Hey Matt, Great videos I love your stuff but I have to strongly disagree with you on the mode dial locks. The D7000 mode dial changed on me all the time when I was carrying it on my shoulder or in and out of camera bags. This was very frustrating after you have shot 100 photos only to realize you were on shutter priority when you thought you were in aperture priority. My D600 fixes this and its great! The D70 mode dial never changed nor needed a lock.

I find that the mode dial on my D7000 gets knocked of my intended setting quite a bit, so I think the new second locking button would be an advantage for me. It might be shooting style. I walk around quite a bit with a home made "ghetto Black Rapid" style strap which might contribute to the problem for me.

its still 24mp but the image sensor is 1.5 times smaller than full frame giving an appearance of being croped compared to on a full frame. but in cropped image mose its cropping to 16 or so mp so you might as well just crop on the pc

I've got a D90 & SB600. I'm thinking of getting this D7100 & the SB910, along with the new 18-300 6.3G lens to add onto my newest lens I just got this week the 105mm. Is the upgrade from the d90 /sb600 to d7100/sb910 worth it? Supposedly there was another rumor Bout the d9300 coming out, or should I just wait. =} thanks

I went one step further and upgraded to the FF 24-70 f2.8 while shooting on crop for over a year before upgrading to my first FF Nikon, sure you sacrifice a little on the wide angle but the IQ was amazing and I didn't have to pay for an expensive DX 17-55 f2.8 and then spend the money again for the FF version. By the time I bought my D700 nearly all my lenses were FX already. Invest in that good FX glass early and then transition to FX bodies won't be as financially brutal

One interesting thing I've found about my D7100 in the 1.3x crop mode is that it crops enough of the image out so that my cheaper lenses don't look so cheap. It crops out the vignetting and corner sludge (lack of sharpness) on most of them and makes them appear to be better lenses. I wouldn't ever recommend going out and buying crappy lenses, but if you have some lenses that are older or lower quality, the D7100 may actually HELP you with those and make them useable.

Mate, Would you say 6400 ISo would be a lot more color noise cuz its a DX sensor...lets stay shooting milky way? I am coming from D90 and max usable was even less than 3200. Since NIkon marketed D7100's ISO range from 100-6400, I would assume that color noise and dynamic range would be intact upto 6400?

Thanks for the review, one thing i must know and i am very confused about it, i bought nikon d7100 based on ur review but lot of people speacially tony and chelsa said 50mm 1.8 lens works as 75mm 2.9 since it is crop sensor 1.5. About focal length i dont mind but if f value changes from 1.8 to 2.9 thn i dont thing its a smart buy. Please clarify this confusion thanks

7100 gives you focus motor on the body and flash commander. To me that's worth it already. If you are going FF, take into account cost of upgrading your lenses as to me it's useless to go FF without the PRO grade lenses. As for me, i'm sticking with D7000 and upgraded my lenses. Upgraded from 18-105 to 17-55 and 70-300VR to 70-200VR2

When considering image quality overall the d7000 can be considered as a class below the d7100, when factoring that in the d7000 fits its price point nicely in terms of features. When considering it from an image quality perspective vs the d5200 (or even the d3200) it loses especially in low light and higher iso. It definitely is more robust and has better features than those two, so in that price range the choice is image quality vs features (esp using AF lenses). My 2 cents.

I'll have to say that the D7000 is sort of an exception to this (generally good) rule of thumb, particularly if you don't *need* the D7100's extra features. (That said, for anyone selling prints, 16" x 20" or 24" is sort of the breakover point for real profit, and the D7100 is a *much* better fit.) The D7000 is still among the best crop-sensor cameras on the market, and the savings (about 2/3 of the price, or $400 less on average) is a good chunk of a good lens. Never say "never".

Mat another KZbinr by the name of photouniverse reported I think in this video " Pro Budget Kit Update" that Pentax is also have exposure problems. I know Pentax and Nikon use Sony sensors and I think also Sony chips. So that weird exposure problem that is showing up in Nikon and Pentax cameras might because of a fiddly Sony chip or something.

I blow up images from the D3200 to 12"x18" and they come out flawlessly. I've blown up an image from my shitty Olympus point-and-shoot from about 10 years ago or my phone: a Samsung Galaxy FIT to 12"x16" If the photo's good enough, it can be blown up perfectly...perhaps your exposures are way off or you crop too much?

Not completely true. And if you are going to use it for video, then there will be a huge difference. For most people a quality point and shoot or a PEN or N1 is more then enough. A camera at the level of the 7100 is really for the enthusiast, and at that point you may be able to notice the quality difference. More then that, the bells and whistles (extra gimmicks) can be very important at the enthusiast level. Don't get me wrong, the 7000 is an amazing camera as well.

The Nikon D7100 is so good - I think it's the reason that Sony delayed the launch of it A77 successor. Guess Sony will go back to the workbench for some months and build more improvements into the "A78" to make it competitive to the D7100.
