Finally a full-frame camera with a tilting screen. My prayers have been answered as a macro photographer. Many times when my camera is on a tripod angled down or up on a subject, it's awkward if not impossible to look into the viewfinder. With a tilting screen, I can now use Live View and zoom into my focus point on the screen and make sure focus is dead on before I press the shutter. Nikon nailed it here.
@justinsane3909
@justinsane3909 10 жыл бұрын
My mistake, they didn't exactly nail it, they left the AA filter on the sensor....Not the best for macro photographers looking to achieve maximum sharpness. Now I have to decide between the D5300 or the D750...

Hi Tony. My Sony a99 has a tilting, extending screen. It's a 35mm full frame digital camera. It's been out since October 2012. By the way, the tilt is much more versatile than this one (and the body has GPS). Just another friendly reminder, don't forget about Sony's offerings in your comparisons (as you did when you said that only Canon and Nikon had full frame 70-200 f/2.8 lenses in another video).

A consideration for me is the weight of the camera. If you are in the field the D800 is heavier to carry around. The D700 is 750g vs the D810 is 880g.

I just went from the Nikon D610 to the D810, and the difference was worlds apart! The viewfinder is so much better, the way the camera reacts, and the button layout is made for pros. Always changing the ISO with the stupid button on the D610 was horrible, but the D810 is flawless as far as I'm concerned.
@BluefanNL

Even with identical sensors the D750 may outperform the D610. The AD converters used to digitize the sensor output also influence the noise performance and these can be different. So see if you can test the camera, saying it performs the same without actual hands--on experience is a premature conclusion.

Metering system jump from 2,016 to 91,000 point might make a massive difference in face recognition for autofocus. As I understand, DSLR's essentially are limited to using the metering sensor for face recognition. Mirrorless systems, by contrast, can make full use of the image information for face recognition because the image sensor is continually exposed to the entire scene. This might explain why my Sony a6000 does face recognition so much better than my Nikon D750. (750 is vastly better in most respects including low light autofocus and overall image quality.)

Thank you Tony for this very informative overview. I am one that has not yet invested heavily in lenses, so when I upgrade I can switch from my crop Canon to a full frame Nikon. I was already considering the Nikon D750. Your videos, which are always helpful, have really aided in my decision. You give facts and enough technical details (without completely overwhelming me) in a concise manner which I appreciate. I have so much to learn, but I'm a serious enthusiast endeavoring to grow as a photographer. I wish Canon would get more in the full frame game and create an additional strong contender beyond the 6D, particularly in this price range. Thank you both for all of your work and effort, it shows in your videos.

The sensor in the D750 is different than the D610. Compare the low light performance and it's obvious that those cameras have different sensors. The D750 does much better than the D610 when using high ISOs.

I own a canon 50D and some basic lenses and am really poised to make the jump to full frame. Would you suggest i wait for the 5D mk4 so i can have a better choice or i go for the D750 nikon? What i like a lot is the tilt screen which for me is useful to take shots and video from high above or real low and i do not think it will feature in the 5dmk4. Also what i like a lot are the wifi feature and the popup flash which is useful when travelling and cannot carry a lot of gear and judging from canon's history it won't feature either in the mk4. Also what lenses would you suggest for a serious enthusiast like me? Thanks in advance and keep up the good work

For me, the D750 (specs at least) makes perfect sense. It's worth the extra dollars over the D610. AF at -3 EV is great. Just browse for light conditions worse than -2 EV. You can't always light your subject with a flashlight for AF or focus manually (in most cases your only chance when it is dark). And because a lens motor needs space behind the infinity setting to move fowards and backwards, setting a lens manually to infinity almost never works.

Tony i always watch you and Chelsea when i want to get the latest updates on Camera equipment. i got your book, Stunning Digital Photography. It's great thanks. Question i bought the Nikon D5300 when it came out. it has a lot of new features that had not been out yet on other cameras. New Expeed 4 sensor, WiFi and GPS built in, i like the full articulating screen, No AA filter.these are just some of the great things on this camera. i use it daily. shooting bands, car shows, fire works. and so on. it has really been a great camera. i also bought a D300, very good camera. but now i am ready to move up to Full frame. i really like the D750 it has a lot of the same features that my 5300 has. and it is 1000.00 less than the 810. the only thing that bothers me about the D750 is that it has an AA filter. will that make that big of a difference on Picture quality. I don't get why Nikon did this. The D5300 didn't have it. the new D810 doesn't have it. why would they bring that back. any clues, and like i said will it make a big difference you think. thanks for your response.

I am going to upgrade to a full frame and considering three combos; D750+85mm1.8G_D610+Tamron70-200f2.8 DiVC(or Nikon70-200f4)_Canon6D+135mmf2L. For me, They are comparable since each of these would cost me the same and I cannot afford more at this moment. I know that 135mm is different from 85mm or a zoom lens is more versatile but since I am more into portrait, a fast medium-long focal length is a must for me. I am not into action photography but I need accurate peripheral fous points since the focus and recompose technique is out of question due to the paper thin DOF. I would really appreciate it if you could tell me which combo would meet my need better.

Hi Tony! I have a Nikon D5200 with the Tamron 16-300mm lens. I am currently looking into upgrading to either the D750 or staying DX and waiting for the D500 to release. I mostly take landscape stills, but am looing into shooting portraits and maybe weddings on the side. Having a tilt screen is a big advantage for me because of some of the hard angles I capture, which is why I am choosing between these two camera's. Would you recommend making the leap to full-frame or staying with DX? I also read that the D750 auto adjusts to support DX lenses, which would be a big benefit for me as I like my Tamron lens. Thanks for your time, and I look forward to hearing your professional opinion!

+Jake Edwards You should go full-frame; the jump in image quality will be significant, and you'll have many more quality FX lenses to choose from. You don't want to use DX lenses on an FX body; the D750 would become only 10 megapixels with a DX lens. Enjoy!

Although I don't think this new sensor to be vastly superior to the D610, I do think they've upgraded it a bit. Nikon has a long history of tweaking their sensors between products. I actually suspect this will be Nikon's best low light camera. Also, the D750 has an AA filter. I'm being told that 24MP on a FF sensor is two few MP to avoid jaggies and anti-alising.

Is the Sigma lens that you recommend instead of the standard kit lens better than the Nikon 28-300 mm f/3.5-5.6 lens ? Get familiar with your camera. Save money and invest in a good lens. Your crop camera will do just fine. Once you start getting really good and comfortable with taking pictures in manual mode, then I would recommend moving towards the full frame cameras. You should as a professional not be using Auto mode as a crutch.

Hi Tony, I just stumbled across this video. I don't know if I should get the D750 or save some money and buy the D610. Is almost 2 years since you made this video, do you know now if the D610 and D750 have the same sensor? And does the D750 autofocuses -3 EV? Thanks in advance.

I would love to know how you compared the sharpness of the Sigma 24-105 with the Nikon 24-120 lense when the N-mount Sigma has not been tested by DXOMark yet? Unless this is speculation based on comparing a C-mount Sigma 24-105 with the Canon 24-105, but that would be a bit useless...

Hi, When will you bring the real life version on and your view on the real handeling and quality? Would also be awesome to find out what all-in-one lens for this full frame you would recommend? (Looking at Nikkon 28 - 300 or Tamron 28 to 300) not sure what the difference is, any feedback?

I noticed that when shooting video in DX crop mode, the sharpness isn't as good as it is in FX mode. Do you think this has more to do with the lens (16-35mm f/4G) or pixel density of the sensor in DX crop mode vs a true APS-C camera (D5300)? It doesn't make sense since filming at 1080p is only 2MP and both sensors are 24.3MP natively or 16.2MP on the D750 in DX crop mode.

Great review of the Nikon D750 Tony. I picked up a Nikon D750 in a kit with the Nikkor AF-S 24-120 f4 VR zoom lens for the very reason you cited, I didn't have a need for the 36mp of the Nikon D810.

I bought that kit lens with my d810 before watching this after hearing Artoftheimage's rave reviews. Used it all day in DC and it was soft as mush! it was alright at 24 but at 120 it was a joke! Been wondering hard what to use as a walkaround, and I trust this guy's review enough to get either the Sigma 24-105 or the Tamron 24-70. Which one?!?! HELP!!!

I would say Nikon has 4 full frame cameras, plus one limited edition model, Df. Did Tony just say only Nikon has a full frame body with Wi-Fi? I doubt if the -3 Ev focusing applies to all of the AF points. The -3 Ev spec is probably just for the center AF point. My single biggest complaint with my Nikon D3 is that I cannot use the large rear display for shooting info when on a tripod. The screen blanks out as soon as I touch the shutter, so I am forced to used the top LCD. My Canon 1D Mark IV can show real time exposure info on the rear screen, and it is older than the D3. Has Nikon added this feature, yet? It is a total non-starter for me, and why I shoot with Canon.

Per Dpreview, D750 does have AA filter. www.dpreview.com/previews/nikon-d750 you say in your review it does not. Another problem with D750 in addition to disappointing 1/4000 is lower Flash xsync rate - 1/200. D810 (like D800, D700, and even D7000 before it, could go to 1/320).

Hello Tony, thank you for your preview. You've just told that 24-120 kit lens is no good for Nikon D750 and sugested to get Sigma 24-105 art instead. Can you please tell how many Mega Pixels will Sugma Art resolve from Nikon D750 compare to Nikon 24-120? Didn't find that info on DxOMark web site. Thank you.

Asusuall your review has always been very informative and objective. I am willing to upgrade to Full Frame camera and confused between Nikon and Canon. But Canon 6D is bit old now and lack many features but I dont want to burn a hole in my pocket by buying a Canon 5d Mark iii since I am not a professional photographer. Should I move to Nikon d750, please suggest. (Note: At present I am using Canon 700d.

Should I buy a new D750 or a used D810? They both are in my budget. I’m ditching Canon . They have new D810 on EBay for 1650 but I’m afraid to buy one from EBay, so that’s why i would get used.

Tony Northrup Hey Thanks for this quick anwser ! Can i ask you for your opinion about "Highlight weighted metering" ? Is it worth for outdoor people/portrai photographie in harsh midday light to buy the 50mm 1.4 Nikon lens for "Highlight weighted metering" ? (tree shadows etc) The Sigma Art lenses (35mm and 50mm) are much sharper but the bokeh is not as good and no Highlight weighted metering... So... Sigma or Nikon... uhmm...

Hi Tony, nice review. One question is how long can the D750 stay in live view before the auto live screen off timer kicks in and shuts off live view. My d5200 turns off after 30 minutes. I would like to use the camera for live concert broadcasting but they all seem to shut off too soon. I heard your side camera shut off during the video and you glanced at it :) I don't need to record to the camera as it would be going liveview out the hdmi port to a blackmagic ATEM TV switcher. Perhaps you could do a test with the hdmi connected to a monitor and see how long it will stay in live view. I also wish Nikon would have a feature so you can record video without time constraints. Go Pros can do it, one clip ends then It continues to record the next clip without losing any time in between clips.

I watched Dave Dugdale's comparison on the GH4 vs. a7s, and I can't help but wonder if you're putting too much stock in 4K recording. I'm not that heavily into video (although I would like to get better videos one day), and I notice he cares about DR, high ISO performance when recording, and how the codec treats the files. Wouldn't it be fairer to wait until the D750 comes out before recommending video recorders? That's not to say the GH4 won't still be better, just a less biased approach ;-). Also, if you're serious about recording video, wouldn't you get a Ninja or another external recorder if you wanted RAW video?
@TonyAndChelsea
@TonyAndChelsea 10 жыл бұрын
kingalias Just like photography, different videographers have different priorities. We don't often shoot in low light, so high ISO performance isn't a priority. We do often run-and-gun, and working spontaneously often means cropping heavily for the purpose of composition, and 4k helps with that. We'd certainly love more dynamic range and better high ISO performance, but for the work we do, we'd rather have 4k. The Ninja Shogun 4k is still not available, so good luck recording 4k with an external recorder at the moment. And I recently reviewed the D810's video capabilities in comparison to the GH4, and I don't expect the D750 to be better. The GH4's video AF capabilities are FAR superior, and it has focus peaking and an electronic viewfinder, all things we can't live without for video. We already know the D750 lacks those, in addition to 4k. The GH4 is also smaller, lighter, and cheaper.
