Got Nikon Z 35 1.4 last weekend, used it for small wedding, first impressions - its great, very light, at 1.4 plenty sharp in middle on Z8. Stopped down gets really sharp. Compared to Nikon 40mm f2, 35mm 1.4 is much sharper. I would say Sigma Art 35 1.4 is little bit sharper at f1.4, I looked at the photos when I had Sigma (till 2017). Would be interesting to compare side by side. Happy that there isnt AF/MF switch. Fun fact, in Latvia both 35mm 1.4 and 1.8S costs basically the same - around 700 euros.

Agreed. So many people complaining about it not being an S lens or not being as sharp. Don't care about any of that as long as it gets the type of shallow depth of field shots that my clients will be happy with.

I have spent the last few days with the 35mm 1.4Z and the Sigma Art 35mm 1.4 f mount. The sigma is still sharper. The nikon will get even around f3.2 and probably peaks at f5.6. Corner sharpness is better for the sigma, if it matters to your work. The field of view is very slightly wider on the sigma, but it feels like an in-lens correction on the nikon side to correct the distortion. The sigma has slightly more contrast as well and has a cooler colour rendition. The purple fringing is there indeed in the nikon, but a slider move in LR corrects it. I guess we will soon have a lens profile. I personally find the bokeh quite pleasing on the nikon side. I guess it's a question of preference. The biggest benefit of the z lens is the weight. If you add up the sigma, its lens hood and the ftz adapter, it reaches 835g. The nikon is half the weight. For contextual portaits and street photography I think it is an interesting lens option with a different character. If you need a better corner sharpness it might not be the best tool. But the overall experience is pretty satisfying.

To me it looks like it was made for video. Focus ring with "Focus rotation range" available in custom settings for linear focus, control ring for aperture, low focus breathing compared to the Sigma. edit: also, round bokeh balls throughout the frame (even in the corners) at the cost of sharpness.

I know from another video you really like the Sigma Art 35mm F1.4 adapted to Nikon mirrorless. I have that lens and love it for family portraits etc. I don’t shoot weddings, and feel it would be a bit too heavy to carry all day and the lack of weather sealing is an issue. For my use case, would it be worth getting the new Nikon f1.4 or sticking with the Sigma? I use it with a Z8and a Z7.

In theory a 35 z 1.4 is very high on my wish list. But have to say I'm put off a bit by the low price, lack of s classification and kind of plasticky look in this case. If Nikon had maybe given given it something like an Art Moniker (or similar), something to suggest the softer look is a conscious choice, and dare I say it, price it a bit higher, it would make me believe in it a bit more. As it is, it feels a bit of a random choice! I loved the Nikon 58 1.4G and am all for lenses in which character is placed above sharpness.
@pzweddingsАй бұрын
Sorry, no. Don't agree with you in any of those points. Make it more expensive, give it a name, thats all literal bullshit. That's just marketing getting to your head. Put it on the camera, shoot it and then choose. If you want sharper wide open, go for the 1.8, if you don't mind aberrations and vignetting 1.4 might be cool.

I got mine and love it so far with the family photos but it does seem soft. I have been shooting the 50mm 1.2 while waiting for a good 35mm option. I loaned out my sigma 35mm 1.4 which I am going to test head to head but I feel it was much sharper or maybe contrasty then the new 35mm. The size and weight make of the is lens is amazing to shoot though. I shoot for other studios mostly so I do 4 wedding weekends all summer. I want this lens to be everything I need but its hard to believe a $600 lens could replace my sigma 35mm 1.4 and justify using it when I have a 50mm 1.2 in my bag. Thank you for being the first one to get out some real world content with this lens that I follow at least.

I thought I was the only one who accidentally bumped the aperture/ISO ring on these lenses! Shooting with the 24-70 f/4S and was constantly annoyed as to why my aperture was always off. I wish Nikon would allow more than just the current functions though, for example to change focus-mode on the fly or to set shooting mode (imagine using it to ramp up or down frames-per-second in continuous shooting mode). Also probably some sort of lock for future releases (doubtful but optmistic)
@bsc0013 ай бұрын
I guess you have already tuned the ring to the less-sensitive mode in the menu? That works quite well for me….
@FawfulDied3 ай бұрын
@@bsc001 That's only for the lens control ring, IIRC. The 24-70 f/4 only has one ring: a focus ring, no control ring.
@bsc0013 ай бұрын
@@FawfulDied Sorry, to be clear, I was referring to the ‘control-ring’ found on some lenses. As you know, quite a lot of the S-line have them, and setting them to a less sensitive setting avoids adjustments when accidentally bumping them. Bigger bumps of course, would still result in some minor changes in whatever is assigned to it.

Nikon should make it so that you have to hold the Fn button (or any other button) to activate the Control Ring. It seems like a simple firmware fix and would be so useful for me. Also, open up the options of more funcations to be able to assign to it.
