Most accurate review of the Z 50 so far. Not a bunch of nagging and complaining about bs. All these current cameras are overkill regardless of manufacturer. With the Z 50 I can get both lenses for under $1400 which fits my budget of $1500 that I'm willing to spend on a new kit. I shot a last minute wedding reception with a Nikon D5300 in practically no light on a kit lens. Pushed the raw files 2 - 3 stops, easy noise correction, all the shadow detail was still there on shots without the speedlite (practically no noise or grain after editing). Z 50 Great image quality ✅ Low light performance ✅ Lens options ✅ Compact & comfortable ✅ Battery life ❌ The only reason I may not buy the Z 50 is battery life.

@@RicciTalks that'd be great b/c that's pretty much what's going to determine whether I buy it or not. I still use a D300 and get 1000 shots on 1 charge. I have the grip too, not sure how many shots more b/c the batteries haven't needed to be charged yet, it barely gets use beyond 20-30 shots before I charge the main one (more of a security blanket). I can do a day and a half of shooting on 1 battery.

Will be curious to see how the Z50 does with the F mount 18mm-55mm AF-P lens with the FTZ adapter. That lens is light and focuses quickly on my F mount DX cameras. If I did buy a Z50, not sure if I would need the kit lens since I already have the F mount 18mm-55mm AF-P lens.

The latter version of the 18-55 DX AF-P F-mount lens is actually a very under-rated lens, IMO. Within a small, well-defined space, its actually got a lot going for it. Mainly, Im talking about walk-around everyday video. Still, though, it would be nice to ditch the FTZ and go with this 16-50 DX Z mount.

I personally like it a lot. I own a Z6 which I primarily use for portraits and some fashion shoot. A Z50 would serve me very well for short holiday break. It’s a pity that Nikon didn’t launch it with a 18-140 DX as well at this would have got a lot of traction. After that, a couple of pancakes stabilised (DX 16 f2.8 and DX 20 f2.8), a mid-range (DX 16-80 f4 VR) and an UW (DX 10-20 VR) zoom and it’ll sell like crazy. Rest of lenses from Zs line
@KungPowEnterFist4 жыл бұрын
Its a difficult decision on what to bundle at launch. Including entry level 16-50 DX and 50-250 DX as kit options makes this an affordable package. The Z6 and Z7 launched with semi-premium lenses and people complained about cost. I myself got a Z6 body at launch and still have not purchased a Z mount lens. I am actually very interested in the 16-50 DX for my Z6 as a potential super light walkaround video lens. Im still using my 18-55 DX F-mount for that purpose, and if fits that role well. Although, it would be nice to ditch the FTZ adapter.

I'm far more excited by the Z50 than I was by the Z6 or Z7. It seems like Nikon struck a much better balance of performance, size, features, and price point. I'm hoping that this is their new definition of "entry level" for cameras. In particular, leaving off in-body stabilization I think makes sense; you have a combination of a massive mount and a tiny sensor, so you have plenty of room for stabilization in the lenses instead. I have only two complaints based on the specs, and they're minor: 1. I wish the SD slot had been UHS-II instead of UHS-I. Going with a single slot on a body of this size makes sense, but the faster write speeds would have made that far less of a compromise I think. 2. I wish it had used the same battery as the Z6/Z7. Nikon seems to be drifting away from the idea of commonality, and I think that will hurt them in the long run.
@EmpoweredForPurpose4 жыл бұрын

Hello Ricci thanks for the review - I primarily shoot birds and was pondering over Nikon Z6 to replace my D7100. I use 300 mm F4 non Vr and 1.4 TC. I did see people posting bird photos but majority are of bigger size birds likes of birds of prey! Nikon Z6 is 24MP full frame body and if you shoot smaller birds (Robins/Flycatchers etc.) to get bigger image one tends to crop in PP so number of pixels I guess will be impacted and IQ may suffer. This may not be the case with larger/bigger size of birds. Z7 has more MPs so all this can be managed I guess but it’s not in budget. I thought of moving to Full frame but because of above MP issue I may have to reconsider Z50 or D500 Kindly let me know your thoughts/views about how Z6 MPs get impacted after crop especially smaller birds Thank You!!

Hi Ricci .. I am interested in using the 16-50mm Z-DX on the Z7 as a compact walk around lens. Please include in your review how well the VR & IBIS work together, and also the image quality (sharpness and vignetting) of the 16-50mm when used on wider than 1.5x crop on the Z7. Thanks!

Hey I would just wait for the pancakes Nikon is set to drop for the Z's, I think there's a 28mm and a 40mm that are supposed to be high quality and tiny that will come out next year. There's also some very compact manual focus lenses with native Z AND you can adapt almost any pancake from another camera as the Z flange is so short.
@Ritalie3 жыл бұрын
Lower megapixels take much better low light photos. High megapixel are junk for normal everyday use. The pixels get smaller, and take in less light, the more pixels you have, with all other things being the same. The sad fact is, many people need large specifications, without any understanding of what the specifications mean. I have a Nikon D3300 that I bought in 2014. The camera doesn't have a scratch on it. I've used it hiking and in the workshop. The buttons don't have a mark on them, the labels haven't rubbed off. I have seen some of the new Sony cameras, the button lettering actually rubbed off on some of the buttons. Nikon build quality is absolutely amazing. I'm sure Canon is just as good. But I did have a Canon 70D and it didn't take nearly as sharp of images as the Nikon D3300. I'm finding that the only complaint of new Nikons is the auto focus. But many people report that the Nikon still images and video is richly colorful and more beautiful than the competitors. I've read hundreds of comments praising Nikon cameras for their beautiful images.

This is more attractive of a camera than I was expecting. The size and modest pixel count makes it a very useful travel camera with 16-250mm covered. The burst mode is faster than I expected also. 1 slot is fine and I would not expect an XQD in a DX. Given the S lens optical performance, any hint as to what the Dx lenses do compared to the common variable aperture kit lenses usually used with Dx. Is your sample 1.0 firmware or earlier? I would be very interested what changes were done to AF tracking, for example, is there focus confirmation that is missing from the 6/7s and is the eye AF any better or the same as the Z50 bigger brothers? Is there a suggested price published yet? What about Wi-Fi/Bluetooth? Weather sealing? If it is selling for $1200 or less with a kit lens it could be a big hit and might embarrass some pretty expensive cameras in low light and video performance. Overall, it looks nice. Thank you for your very informative videos, the best on YT for Nikon information. Your lens comparison videos are the best regardless of brand

Because this new mount is massive. It's going to open up many more possibilities in lens design for Nikon.
@AF8Images5 жыл бұрын
Ricci, totally agree with you that it's important to consider the Z50 for what it is in some areas and not just compare with Z6/7. The differences in image stabilisation will need considering if you plan to mix and match Z6/7 & Z50. Also what is the weather sealing like on the Z50/DX lenses? All the best, Adrian
@lcador95 жыл бұрын
There is no difference in stabilization as neither the Z50 nor Z6/7 lens are stabilized.
@AF8Images5 жыл бұрын
@@lcador9 You are correct in that statement but if you use a Z6/7 with for example an S-line lens then it is stabilised using IBIS, if you use a Z50 + new DX lens then the lens has VR, but combine the Z50 and s-line FF lens then you get neither. Not a simple use any z-mount lens and get stabilisation.

can you tell me what is the max focal length we will get with dx 50-250 mm lens with Z50 ?
@eldindokara78684 жыл бұрын
250mm on Z50 will be equivalent of 375mm at Z6, Z7 FX cameras ( 1.5 X crop )
@VRGRPK2 жыл бұрын
If we want to be precise, the exact crop factor for the Z50 is 1,531 x, so 250mmx1,531=382,75mm.

I'm curious about the video quality of the 16-50 mm on the Z6 in DX crop mode. I know the resolution drops in Photo mode. But Video is at max 4k, so should be good right? If right the combination will give a nice & light weight setup for gimbals etc..

@KungPowEnterFist4 жыл бұрын
Yes, but keep in mind that not all Z-mount lens are are optical VR. If I am not mistaken, these two new Z mount DX lenses are the only ones with optical VR. The rest of the Z mount lenses rely on IBIS (Z6/Z7). This is a problem for the Z50 at this time.

Hi Ricci, great video. Olympus comes with built-in IBIS system on all its M4/3 series and I expect Nikon to have this feature, too. And, a sideflip screen is more attractive that a underflip screen. Go for a smaller camera, I would prefer a Olympus OM-D series just because of built-in IBIS system.

Olympus Is a smaller sensor that’s easier to add ibis to and keep the body smaller. This camera is designed to be small adding ibis would of made it bigger....

May I ask why everybody is mad about the single SD card slot? What's the big benefit of two (non SD) cards I don't see?
@connerfreeman96094 жыл бұрын
SD cards sometimes fail and you lose all your images. It’s rare, but if you’re shooting something like a wedding it would be a disaster. If you have 2 card slots you can shoot redundantly and have a backup card.
@mneedes24 жыл бұрын
XQD cards are supposed to be very reliable, especially if you 1) Use the in-camera format mechanism to clear off images that you have already transferred 2) Only remove the card when it is not busy with the card (camera is turned off or red light on back is off).
@EmpoweredForPurpose4 жыл бұрын
I’ve shot with redundancy for years, but never needed the back up, would just format card, and use again and again. I get it though, for security reasons, but never needed the back up for four years straight

If this camera uses a similar performing sensor as D7500 and D500 at 20mp but with DPAF on sensor now, this should perform well for low light. I reviewed the photos of Canon m6ii at 32mp and they looked noisy at high iso on dpreview.com 20MP is plenty enough for casual use, and actually very good for an apsc sensor. My 80D Canon with 24mp has fine noise at higher iso like 5000iso, I expect this sensor in Z50 to perform better in low light with lower noise over 80D or other apsc Canon cameras currently which include 77D, and current M series cameras. Not sure how sharp the kit lens is though, we have to wait to see the results at launch. Options for a better kit lens would be welcome like a constant f4 for apsc, perhaps in the future.
@dan44664 жыл бұрын
Adrian Van Leeuwen. It’s suppose to be the exact same sensor as the D500. I just looked on Nikon USA and numbers wise the sensors are exact so maybe it’s true.

You said, "the key thing is you can make use of the Z-series lenses." The key thing is that a D50 and Z-series lens combination will not be stabilized. Sure the S-series lenses will fit the non-IBIS Z50 but will produce a non stabilized combination. This is one case where two negatives do not make a positive. This does not sound like an advantage! Yes, the Z(DX) lenses will function on the Z6/7 cameras providing both IBIS and lens stabilization. How these two stabilizations will interact is questionable.
@RicciTalks5 жыл бұрын
You could just use a fast enough shutter speed ..... the Z6 /Z7 will receive a firmware update to allow the ibis and VR to work together

Well this isn’t a D500 level camera that dosnt mean that there won’t be a D500 level camera in the future this is more inline with d5600 and D7500. You have to start some where low end mid or high end u can never be right for everyone

Mho , Nikon are so way behind the competition for mirrorless cameras at the moment. For the price of the Z50 , you can buy right now a Fuji XT1 and still have a couple of hundred in your pocket. The XT2 will smoke this camera for AF- build quality and specs. Any is a couple of years older to. For Nikon to be even be taken seriously, they must catch up or even surpassed the competition as for all those who have already invested in Fuji , Canon and Sony are not going to be selling up and buying Nikon. Plus there are only 2 lens at the moment for Nikon aps-c mirrorless and Nikon don’t even include the adaptor in the box, which would of given a lot more interest.
