So spot on! Thanks for this, Josh! It resonates so much with me - I admit that there's an additional factor in G.A.S., at least for me. Being a techie kind of person, I also enjoy mastering the new toy, and making it an automatic part of my shooting. Shooting with that same old D850, with its just-as-good sensor, but not-as-good autofocus, certainly doesn't hold me back from great shots, but think how much better I'll be with the new autofocus!!

@robwolfe85712 жыл бұрын
@@BayouJosh It might. Luckily for my wife, my G.A.S. started tapering off substantially approx 10 years ago. I grew tired of the gear upgrades and always having to learn the in-n-outs of new equipment and software. The technology hampster wheel just became 'too much' and I just kinda fell off. I started shooting looong before digital so I went back to basics; brought my old 4x5 camera and Photomic Ftn out of retirement and started shooting B&W and slide film again. Everything digital now is mostly on my cell phone. (although I did keep my 'old' D3x but it rarely gets used. Still my favorite DSLR though.) As for wildlife? Pretty much binos only these days. For the past 5 years, my 600mm hasn't been out of the house once and honestly, I don't miss the weight or the sifting through thousands of semey bird pics that I already have thousands of. I realized that wildlife photography was the thrill of the hunt; the experience. In the beginning, photography was an excuse to get out and enjoy nature. In the end, the excessive gear, gizmos and pressure to come home with that next amazing shot was taking away from my enjoyment. Nature photography became like golf: a good walk spoiled. Althouth after watching a few of your amazing videos, I seem to be getting that hankerin' again. Hmm, maybe a 500PF will be just the thing...

Excellent. If better tools don’t help, we should still be plowing with oxen, shipping on wagons, crossing the ocean on sailing ships, etc. The artist creates the art, better tools help us create, better. As an engineer as well, we all have to accept that anything in production is obsolete. Doesn’t mean it doesn’t make our lives easier though. People ask why I go to the same places over and over. That is because it is never the same twice. I go new places as well but, there is nothing wrong with revisiting old favorites. There is nothing wrong with trying to improve on the art you created yesterday either. Most of the “art” I created yesterday needs improvement anyway. Keep doing what you love. Keep spending time with whom yo love. Share that time together and if you create, nothing else, create memories. That new gear might spark a new drive in you. That outing might keep the spark going between you. Not because of the art you create but the memories you create. Together.

The key is to be out there. Patience is key. Timing helps. Knowledge of the area. I admit I get a little bored with ducks, geese, coots, etc.. Unless they do something like stretch their wings and flight scenes. It is the unsuspecting moment when the elusive wood duck, harlequin duck, that kingfisher dives before you comes up with a fish. An Osprey passes by and dives before you coming up with a fish! Great moments that make your day. The key, get out there...often.

I tell my guitar students all the time that perfection is something you can never attain....don't go for "practice makes perfect," but go for a mindful practice that keeps you motivated and reconnects you with the passion that originally connected you with the instrument. Same goes for photography: find ways to keep improving, but always with an eye for what's most important. And the camera or lens just aren't what's most important. (I say this while I'm selling my old 500mm f/4 so I can get a new 500mm pf 🤣) Awesome video and photos as always, Josh!

I'm really enjoying your channel. Your narrated story-telling format is excellent. Your videography and use of second camera to film you walking into and out of scenes is really quite good too. You mentioned a few videos ago that this is just a hobby for you (don't recall what you said your vocation is), but you're seriously good at it. And of course the images that you're putting up are incredible! I've been a Nikon shooter for a long time, and am so happy to see them not only get cracking in the mirrorless market, but with the Z9, an exception, top-tier camera. I'm still using a D500, and am hopeful that they come out with an APS-C successor to the Z6/7 but with the newer technologies used in the Z9. I'm not ready to dump all my glass...just want a top-level mirrorless body. Anyway, to repeat myself, really like what you're doing!

Like you I struggled with the auto focus abilities of the z6 ii and 500pf lens. I often got nice shots but the ability to lock focus on fast moving objects such as birds in flight was incredibly challenging. The Z9 is just a bit out of my price range so I considered other mfg more affordable cameras. I heard soo much about the canon r6 and 100-500 lens I decided to “borrow” them for a month. The difference was night and day! The keeper rate was 3 times as much and the ability to lock focus not just on the body of a bird in flight but the eyeball was incredible. I hated to switch brands but since Nikon has yet to offer anything that can match the R6 at anywhere near the price the choice for me was easy. I was able to sell my combo for what it cost for the canon set up. Nikon had their chance! Wasn’t willing to pony up another 6k to get what I should have gotten with the Z6 ii. Like you I’m really having fun now. It may not have made me a better photographer but I’m definitely getting better photos more consistently!

Hey Josh. It's a cold and getting colder morning in western Minnesota. Many roads are closed due to blowing snow. Temps are dropping as the morning progresses. So I've kissed the last hour plus away as I listened to you, Aaron and Seth and then watched this latest video. Enjoyed the podcast and the candid verbal exchange. Got several laughs from your comments in the video. Yep. You have us photographers pegged. Did I mention that while listening to the podcast that I checked on availability and pricing of that Nikon Z mount 100-400. It would make shooting those closer in shots much easier than with that 500 PF. Have to wonder what features that rumored Z8 will have too. Oh well, likely better that I just continue to watch your experiences and not have to tell my wife that I just bought "another" lens or camera. I'll be watching so keep up the great work.

Amazing amount of coincidence in this video, Josh. In the past week I have captured my best picture ever (out of thousands) of a Canada goose; I photographed Northern Shovelbill ducks which are seldom seen here; I photographed red-headed ducks which are almost never seen here anymore; I photographed a "song sparrow" which turned out to be a Lincoln's sparrow and a new addition to my photography life list; and I entered two pictures in the DAC TN & KY juried regional photo expo. One of them (Blue Heron Sunrise) won third place in the nature category and the other one, a mourning dove (Seraphim Wings) was awarded best of show with a nice check and ribbon. So, same ol' subjects in the same little park a mile from our home with the same 4 or 5 year old D850. It worked out for me this time, but I do have to agree with you that there is nothing like a new camera or new lens to ignite the creative juices and the energy take your work to new heights. I think it might be that knowing there is no longer any excuse for producing work that does not stun and amaze our audience that inspires us to new efforts. Where are you going from here, Josh? Spring and all its wonderful opportunities is coming on. Are you going to travel? Am I going to get a Z9? ???????????

As someone said... the best images were made by cameras which were way less sophisticated than the one we have.. sure camera does matter but for me what reignited the love is the process of developing artistic vision.. now I am a bit slow than ever before I release that shutter..but more considerate about how different elements coming together in shot.

When I upgrade someday from my 7fps RP, it's gonna feel like I'm shooting a 50 cal. Machine gun. 🤣 Great shots of the redwinged black bird. Spring is not too far off.
