These episodes were filmed at a time of normalcy back in November of 2019. I almost forgot what normalcy looks like until I decided to start editing and found some epic situations going on during this wild trek across the entire US coast to coast.
On this particular 2 days of travel the fall weather was acting up and ATC needed to keep things safe North of DFW. I hope you enjoy.
And if you want to catch the next episode in this wonderful series across the USA click here: • YOUR AIRCRAFT HAS A PR...

Hello everyone, so I was the center controller during this time. The reason we were “shut off” was because of the weather west of DFW preventing any route from the Northeast to transit Tracon’s airspace without deviations. Not because I was “ too busy”. During Convective weather like this, receiving controllers will shut off certain areas in order to keep traffic flow safe and orderly. So, has the transferring controller I must comply with the receiving controllers request. My options were either to give you a reroute towards airspace that was open or assist to your alternate airport. The pilot has full right to cancel IFR at anytime and I was more than happy to provide VFR flight following. Thankfully the Tracon controller was able to continue great service and get you too you destination safely.

Although I know Niko understands, many pilots don’t understand that when tstorms pop up all the normal procedures and routes go out the window and it becomes a street fight! Cancelling IFR was the trick, but as you know not always possible due to WX. As a former DEN approach controller in my early years I don’t miss the pm T storms!

1978, I was still a post-solo "student pilot" flying at around dusk. Called KFRG inbound full stop (yes, I did declare student pilot, tried twice) from somewhere over Deer Park VOR. Thought about diverting to Zahn's just south. Controller told me they were "BUSY", try again in 30 minutes. Eventually, made my first-ever night landing (with zero instruction in that). After I 'splained to my instructor what happened, he read the tower controller the "riot act", and he did get in a little trouble. Made my best ever squeaker landing, but oh-man was my Mom pissed waiting around to drive me home after my lesson. As I recall, she had a few 'words' with the tower.

Niko, nice video. I know you and I have had conversations in the past about a PA-46 versus the Cirrus and that you like them but it’s a deal breaker without CAPS. But, your voyage here can demonstrate the advantages of the PA-46. Your trip from Boca to Little Rock could have been done non-stop, above the weather in about 3:45. Your trip to KLAS could have been made non-stop from Little Rock in about 5 hours. All while breathing pressurized air. And, of course, you would have a pilot relief tube at your disposal. Just something to think about given all the business trips you do. Looks to be about the same as me (about 300 hours/year). Cheers.
@NikosWings
@NikosWings 4 жыл бұрын
But the price, 3X of Athena and annual maintenance at 4X of Athena’s. Fuel costs alone at the PA46 burn rates albeit shorter flights would more than pay for Athena’s annual maintenance costs. And even if all that was same or comparable, the CAPS is still a deal breaker. The only thing I want is pressurization. I hope Cirrus is listening.

That class B clearance directly over KDFW at night was awesome! A few years ago I was returning home to the Chicago area (KPWK) after a fuel stop in Knoxville, TN. Normally Chicago TRACON routes IFR flights around KORD airspace to the west. However, there was a huge thunderstorm blocking my way. They also couldn’t route me along the Lake Michigan shoreline due to the busy arrivals. The only option was directly over O’Hare at 6,000 feet. It was fantastic!

Niko note: I'm not a pilot but I am a Niko's Wings fan; weather buff; Skywarn storm spotter; I live near KADS; and I've done business travel via commercial carriers for many years - so I'm aware of the DFW Tracon quirks. For those unaware, the NTX airspace is broken into 4 quadrants with DFW at the center... NE, NW, SW, SE. There is a corner post in each quadrant that is the focal point for approaches. Niko's display at 10:05 shows convective activity (including some pink!) between Gainesville and Sherman. That CB activity is close enough to the NE quadrant (and WX tends to move towards the south or southeast, usually) and that will make that NE corner post get "weird", or even just shut off. ATC will then re-route traffic to approach from a different corner post. I have returned to DFW from Little Rock and ended up being rerouted through the SE corner post for exactly the same reason, CB activity in the NE quadrant. Lots of changes happened in NTX airspace after the DL191 L1011 crash in 1985. That (along with other windshear/microburst events) pushed the deployment of TDWR (Terminal Doppler Weather Radar), specifically designed to augment the National Weather Service WSR-88D.. DFW was one of the first airports to receive a TDWR. Here's a link to a technical paper from 2007 that describes the DFW Tracon situation. Again, this is from 2007, just for curious interests. pdfs.semanticscholar.org/fa3b/60ed42a0513f7b2d592964222e73ae8b866e.pdf Niko, you indeed flew through some very complicated and busy airspace. Meacham's proximity to DFW makes it tricky. If you are flying through these parts again, there are several great general aviation fields on the outskirts of town. I've heard great things about KTKI (McKinney Airport). KADS is very convenient to Dallas, but then again you are getting into very tricky airspace (close to both KDFW and KDAL.)

I'm not making an excuse... Just sayin' that NTX airspace is incredibly busy, there are 2 major commercial airports less than 20 miles apart, as well as a lot of general aviation airports (such as Meacham KFTW, Addison KADS) that also get VERY busy and are well within this crazy airspace. (My wife jokes that airplanes should be the official North Texas "state bird.") Add that to the wild 4 corner post approach Tracon system, throw in some good old OK/TX supercells.... And you get a situation ripe for substandard communications. The controller sounded young (making an assumption here, no offense to the controller if he reads this) - and if that is the case, I think this became a learning event for the controller. He did get very supportive (offered flight following) when Niko cancelled IFR. And Niko got to "enjoy" traversing one of the most confusing, busiest, and weather impacted airspaces around.

Copter Cop you have no idea how the system works. I can speak from experience as a retired Chicago center controller. Busy approach controls especially during peak traffic times have serious limitations on IFR traffic not landing at the main airports. Center controllers, where this started, have no control over whether approach can or will accept arrivals. It’s pretty standard. Speaking from experience I can say that arrivals to western Chicago satellite airports from the east must fly around or over Chicago Approach. This I safety. There is just not enough room for that traffic mixed in with all the arrivals and departures from the main airports. You will find this at all the major airports, BOS, ATL, DFW, ORD, LAX and the New York area as well. A little flight planning that included the published recommended routes would have garnered a more efficient route. Anybody who is saying they never heard this before has obviously never tried flying through these busy airspace’s.

Wow, Boca to LA! Preference question for you mate...at what distance would you just fly commercial? Seems cheaper and faster when distances get this long....no lay overs if direct, no hotels, as in this video. Just curious of cost vs benefit on a cross country trip of that distance. As always, love your videos, love your new Cirrus, love your demeanor 👍. Cheers mate 🍻

When I was a student pilot, I overheard another student getting chewed a new one by his instructor for not waiting long enough for any answer between shouting "Clear prop" and cranking the engine. As a result, I always gave it that pause. The whole point is safety, and just because you can't see anyone doesn't mean they aren't there. They could be behind the aircraft and about to get pebble-dashed if they don't move fast at some airfields, particularly unpaved ones. And doing it the same every time is standard for almost everything - you don't just decide to do your walkaround the opposite way around on a whim, either. I've even restarted a walk around when I was interrupted part-way around and had my attention off the aircraft for a couple of minutes. Could anything have changed in those few minutes? Probably not, but I prefer certainly not. Some instructors will test students on that kind of thing by moving something you already checked while you are distracted, and I actually wish they all did, at some stage in training.

I was a CFI for a university for a couple years and it saved a friends of mine's life. He was crouched down in front of a 152 looking at the nose tire for some reason and a student in the airplane yelled clear and he got the hell out of the way just in time to keep from getting chopped into fish bait. Almost every item in every checklist killed or hurt someone at some point! That's why it's on the checklist.

Benjamin purchasing an airplane is a lot more complicated than just going to buy an airplane. You have to consider your mission for that airplane and also other factors. First of all the DA62 and DA42 don’t fit in a standard t-hangar. So how you are looking at double the cost of storage at a bigger hangar or the FBO’s big hangar where it can get damaged. Second insurance is super expensive due to the complexities of the airplane multiple engines and retractable gear. We are talking probably $15,000/year for me vs $5,000 for the Cirrus. And the Diamonds don’t have parachutes. In a catastrophic failure like a midair collision or severe icing or being by a thunderstorm and your wings ripped off you are dead, not with the Cirrus you still have a fighting chance. Also the mission and speed with the Diamonds would be the same as the Cirrus but you have triple the systems to maintain. My annual maintenance cost is $7,000 for the Diamonds it would be at least $20,000. Those diesel engines have a hard stop at 2,000 hours after which they just be melted down so you need new engines at $100,000 each. No Sir I’ll pass
