The STAIRCASE is Becoming My Favourite Build / Off Grid LOG CABIN (S3 Ep15)

I've been slowly working on the staircase over the course of the last year, collecting the right pieces of the wood, waiting for the wood to dry, the inspiration to come. To make it less steep I decided to build an L shaped staircase with a glass covered platform in the middle to showcase a beautiful root I found in the forest from a tree torn out by the wind storm. I've been climbing the ladder thousands of times while building the log cabin and the fall I've had was a sign to hurry up with the stairs. The video was long so I decided to split it into two parts, this is the first part of the staircase build.

I have been fortunate enough to ride my motorbike from England to Macedonia ( now called North Macedonia & previously FYROM) 4 times since 2008. Each time a different route there and back, fantastic every time! Travelled sometimes alone & sometimes with brothers from my club, seen some beautiful roads and scenery and met loads of friendly people along the way. What would otherwise be left to rot, burnt in a brush pile or cut up for firewood, showcases the beauty of a rarely utilized piece of the tree. It's the perfect use of the tree's root. Beauty and symmetry found within the roots of trees intrigue me, the wood itself does as well. Whether it's alive or dead, I feel a strong connection with it. This may well sound ridiculous to some people (but really, I don't much care), it's as though the wood itself calls out and/or speaks to me. Regardless of my rantings, you have done a magnificent job. Be proud of yourself young man. Be very proud !

First of all I would like to say that I am happy to see you did not get hurt when you fell from the ladder. I grew up in the construction field and have done the exact same thing when I was much younger and I watched my father do it also. Just wanted to pass along something I watched yesterday on KZbin. Two master craftsmen with wood from a nordic region were debarking logs for a project. To accomplish this task they dragged out a power washer and those logs were clean in a snap. I only mention it because I had never seen it done before and thought you might be interested..have a great day!!

Fabulous work, my only concern would be slip resistance on the glass. I've detailed hotel staircases in the past where we've applied strips of a slip resistant coating to glass platforms to reduce the risk of slipping and injury.

I'm retired now, but after most of a lifetime spent as a carpenter, one of my biggest fears of getting hurt on the job next to cutting myself with a power tool, was having a ladder slip out from under me like that. It's a very easy thing to happen especially when the ladder is on a hard smooth surface, but I'm glad to see you were not hurt worse than you were. That’s a living nightmare to feel it sliding away from you underneath. Luckily you’re not injured or worse 🙏🏻. Isn’t it possible to get rid of the supporting log’s on the corners and use some less visible brackets or anything? I owned and added onto an 1815 log cabin. It was found like many log cabins, hidden inside the walls of a much larger house. We found it in Michigan and it was moved to northern Ohio. The logs were marked for their location and it was literally put together like a Lincoln Log kit. My favorite part of the build was my biggest contribution. I built a one and a half story farm fieldstone wall with a very traditional cooking fireplace. It was outfitted with forged tools and swing arms. My then 8 year old daughter could almost stand up in it and could grow a few feet taller and still be able to lay down in it. I collected the stones with the permission of a few nearby farmers. My second favorite part of that build was the 3-5 ft rectangle slate pieces found in the basement of a fallen down house from the late 1700s. We block and tackle the heck out of the stones to get them from point A to point B. The layout took the longest time. It was like putting together a puzzle for a giant. I am not the strongest woman these days but back then I had an alter ego, Svetlana. She could do anything!

WOW Nik. Glad you are OK, your pride may be a little hurt because you didn't remember to slide the ladder back to where it was but at least you didn't get hurt seriously. Your idea of putting a stump in as the landing is awesome. The cabin is a work of art all by its self but the masterpiece's you are incorporating into your design are incredible. I hope whenever you were free in the following years, place good support under the house to fix the tree root from below, and secure it safely. When I watched the ladder slide out from underneath you, it was instant pain in feb 2018 I had the same thing happen except I shattered my knee and the hospital had to replace the whole knee. one man {basically) working , as a group would do [with some help] and you let people see what a person is capable of doing , amazing ! You deserve everything you worked for , as in like you took a fall , you must have had a flashback of all you did in the beginning to where you were , We all have things that can go wrong and you did a life story for all of us , thanks and good luck with your new home . You have a nice family as we can see and my son is in the process of having a new home . I will be so happy for him upon completion.
