THE LITTLE WHITE ROSE - by Joan Lawrence
The window of the florist's shop was gay
With flowers in an orderly array,
But all alone one little white rose lay
Forgotten in a dusty corner. There,
No eye could see that it had once been fair,
No ear could hear its wistful little prayer.
It wept forlornly for the silver sheen
Of summer showers, and the virgin green
Of laughing gardens it had never seen.
The florist showed me orchids, phlox, and red
Carnations, but I only bought instead
The little rose from which the bloom had fled.
Out in the winter night it trembled, awed,
Baring its timid heart to gaze at God,
Watching the stars that crowded close to nod
A friendly message to its upturned face,
The snow enshrouded it in misty lace.
The kindly north wind slowed his rowdy pace
To waft its wilting petals far and wide.
Happy that it had seen the great outside,
The little flower smiled at me, and died.

I live in Northern Ontario and my take is…guilty as heck! It is very sad that individuals would prey on the most vulnerable without a second thought and then go on to live their lives as if nothing happened. Nik, I love your craft time crime stories …and you book is coming along great. Can’t wait to see the final product !

Having worked as a case manager, partly to prevent this type of thing, I am both saddened and furious by this story. The types of neglect and abuse discussed here are far more common than people realize. Financial abuse is the most prevalent if I remember correctly. Our state has paid and volunteer individuals at the state and county levels to try to reduce abuse. Twenty years ago, financial actions like this were not recognized as abuse and hiding a case was difficult. It is a bit better today. I hope that at least one body is found and the Laan family members convicted.

What a sad story! Yes, there appears to be sufficient evidence for the Land’s arrest and conviction. Elder abuse is such a sad thing and to do this under the auspices of Christendom is shameful! Your eco pages are so lovely, Nik! Keep up the crafting mystery hour!! Loving them :))

Hey Nik the Booksmith...I live in Ontario, Canada, about 3 hrs away from Huntsville, I remember watching the fifth estate re. this story, so sad, a terrible crime that happens more than we would like to admit to. Our laws are very strict, sometimes it seems like the accused have more rights than the victims. As far as whether they are guilty or not, yes they are guilty, there's more than enough proof, in my opinion...Take care...stay safe...

I am Canadian, from southern Ontario and remember when these disappearances first came to light, and the recent 5th estate investigation which is still in constant circulation in the Canadian media landscape. You do not need a body to get a conviction here, and circumstantial evidence can be used. Of course there has to be enough evidence to cover all of the areas of concern. As in the States, no crown attorney (our version of a DA ) will lay charges unless they know they have enough evidence to win the case. Then they just have to make their case in court with said evidence. Having said all that - I have always thought these reprehensible human beings are guilty as sin and continue to hope that they will be brought to account. I suspect they would not last long in a federal prison. I love the papers in this book you are making! I really enjoy all the content on your channel, and I love that you read the Walrus! Great mag!

Crimes against elderly and vulnerable people makes me so angry! Of course it's the family that's murdered these poor souls, at least in my mind after hearing you tell their story. In Sweden, I don't think you can prosecute some one without solid evidence, even if all the red flags are there. There's been cases where that's been tried, but without that solid evidence the charges has been dropped. Fortunately, in the cases I'm thinking of, the evidence has been found eventually and justice has been done. I do hope this will be the case in this crime too. I love these papers and what you've done with them so far. Can't wait to see what comes next! Your videos are so inspiring, Nik! :)

First what a Gorgeous Journal your making ! I have to make two Memorial Journals . One for my Little Sister Cathleen who suddenly with no symptoms passed away almost 3 weeks ago and also one for my Grandkids Grandfather who's husband died from Parkinson's. My Sister had a Massive Stage 4 Brain Tumor in her frontal lobe. I am a recent Disabled Widow with a Blind and Autistic son. I'm struggling as a Senior.Well I have CM1 I have had spinal and Brain Surgery. So I knew somewhat what my sister was going to face but she is a very bad Diabetic. I knew after the Brain Surgery they wanted to start aggressive chemo and I knew it wouldn't work. The Diabetes would kick in and start attacking her kidneys and heart. Her husband passed 4 months prior to her. My husband died and he was a thin man from Diabetes. He lost his foot then his leg then he had had 10 mini Strokes before he passed away. I took care of him alone for 2 years before he passed. All my family are in NY and I am the only one out of state in Savannah GA. When my husband passed I lost a car due to an accident someone rammed into but it wasn't new enough for Insurance to pay out so I also don't have a car. Leaving me isolated and alone with my son. I called several places for help but Seniors don't count. Well I don't quite qualify for allot because I'm 59 not 60. I had to watch my Sister's wake virtually. Because my health wasn't good enough to go to NY nor did I have the funds. They keep raising my rent and my place is sappose to be a luxury town home and everything needs fixing. We sold my house after my husband got sick and moved in here. I hate not having my home. My Sister leaves behind my niece who is severly Diabetic and Severly Autistic. .my other sister is taking care of her. Really I need to make her a Journal also. The virtual wake shook me up it was a camera fixed on my Sister's open casket and sound. So I could hear people talking and laughing for 2 hours and Not seeing anyone go up to NY Sister's casket. It was horrible a nightmare. So being depressed I turned to Beauty looking for new Artists. That's how I found you. And You have been a Blessing! Off course I heard of you but now I have to make these Journals so I needed to watch a Professional. I also Love Pam from the paper Outpost and Emily from Junk Journal Inspiration. I don't know why I just told you all that but your story about Seniors touched me ! I think the family did it. All at least new about it. I know how I have been treated as a Senior. Not Good during this Pandemic. And with no car. Just making the bills I try to make some things to sell. But right now just looking for ideas for the Memorial Journals !! Thank You Stay Safe ❤️

Joan's poem is lovely and very sad at the same time. Your sewing on those signatures is beautiful, as are the signatures themselves. As far as this sad story goes about the missing seniors, if the one gentleman said he heard gunshots and a backhoe on the property, why doesn't someone get a court order to dig up the property? Sounds like somebodies may be found there. What a horrific story of senior abuse!

Okay, I do not believe that anyone should be convicted on circumstantial evidence alone. I do believe that the Canadian police should go to the land property where the first victim went missing, and the backhoe was seen, and do a thorough search with ground radar equipment to find her and anyone else. It is highly unlikely that she was the first victim to die there. Then they would have solid evidence to convict these monsters and throw them in the hooskow until they die. That's what I think anyway. Thanks for sharing.

I live in Ontario Canada but am not up on what it would take for a murder charge. I can tell you however, that Covid has proved that our seniors are not taken care of even in some licensed homes due to greed and government run homes due to lack of funds. While it can be horrendous, my daughter works in a lovely, very well run LTC (long term care) home and some places are well managed and the care givers are wonderful. I read about this family and their, to my mind, undeniable pattern of criminal behaviour. I think it was a story in the local press around Huntsville that I read. I'm Canadian and familiar with the absolute top notch investigative journalism of the Fifth Estate, but I didn't see their show about this case. They seem to have let the behaviour of the family tell the story. I bet the family don't want to talk to the media! It's so horrible how this family has almost certainly preyed upon and victimized who knows how many vulnerable individuals. It's appalling what they have seemingly gotten away with. I don't know if a body is needed but I suppose there is a lack of strong enough evidence to build a case. Whatever is stopping the police from being able to make a case, it makes me mad. Are there not enough police resources in the area??? We all work so hard to do the right thing, make a contribution, etc. And then there are people like this family that give you the icks just to be human like they are. But they are pretty inhuman. Can you imagine living inside their messed up heads? That would be a horrible place to be. Such a sad story. So wrong.

The sentences for Canadian crimes are criminally short, I think. There have been cases where straight-up murderers get less than 10 years. Law enforcement always "urge[s] the perpetrators to come forward" or "urge[s] witnesses to come forward" on the news in these kinds of cases but, that is just cop-speak for they don't have leads and need more information. This case would be tricky to prosecute because of the long period of time since the actual disappearances. The lack of bodies and physical evidence may keep this case cold until either the remains or more evidence is found. I agree that the family is responsible, but by deflecting the crime to the police, it is obvious what their defense would be if prosecuted: they would say that the police took the missing seniors and they were never seen again. Also, despite each family member having long rap sheets and run-ins with the law, this reason is not sufficient to bring the case to trial. It's like saying: "These people are criminals and have a long rap-sheet, so they must have done it." I think the case would be solid, if the bodies of the victims are found. Having remains to analyze will prove when and how the victims died. Also, where the bodies are found may implicate those responsible. It's sad to think that these seniors were hand-picked for this scam because they were extra vulnerable by having no family to check up on them.

Another fabulous craft and mystery. I think anyone with half a brain would come to the same conclusion as you but as you stated, not knowing Canadian law. In live with the eco print you have made. Can't wait to see the finished book. Stay safe till next time. xxx

Very sad. I watched all the videos. Not far from me. I think they didn't press charges as there just isn't quite enough hard evidence. The burden off proof is high. We don't really have civil suits here either , where the burden is lower, so the families ooo these people didn't have much of a chance. Hopefully they will arrest soon. Sound like they may.

What is so sad about all this is that these 'elderly' just aren't given the same respect as others. Somehow, they are 'less than a person'. Just stick them somewhere until they die. Yet, it is the elderly who once ran this country. They were the biggest promoters of the economy and the growth of this nation. They paid the taxes that paved the way in to the 21st century. They raised the current generations! I'm advancing rapidly in to elderly status, myself. I've very active in current 'affairs' to the extent that my age, and body, allow. I am already beginning to see the attitudes of society towards a 'washed up old hag'. So, it comes as no surprise that this case has been tossed aside. It wreaks of having been silenced due to someone's 'warm affiliation' with a law or government entity. I just hope that all those complicit come to realize that they, too, will be elderly, one day. Thank you for doing these! You do an excellent job!

Hi Nik ! You are the best book, book cover designer I've seen. I was wondering if you could help me with something. I want to make a journal, for two women. I want the front cover to be dedicated to one of the girls, the back cover, for the other woman. Maybe, folding out away from the main journal. The main journal being their joined journey, they just got married. Is this possible? Kind of like 2 journies, one pin each cover, then the middle. Do you have any blueprints for something close?

I hate it when people get away with murder. And when you said the one brother got a degree in theology/Christian whatever, I just thought con artist. Figures. Become a preacher and steal from the demented old people who are afraid of dying. It is sad. Though I guess they don't have to have dementia to get scammed. It just makes it easier. Sorry, we had to take away my dad's access to money for this reason. It was too easy to talk him into things. He has a limited amount of cash now if he needs something.

Did the authorities search the properties for Graves? Or use cadaver dogs. I think the Land family is responsible for the disappearances and possibly deaths of these people.

They did do a search, even of the lake that's close by, but didn't find anything. Of course technology is so much better now.

I miss you making movies with a project. Where you immerse yourself in that process. I'm not that much into all the unsolved cases. That's why I watch the video without sound and then they's boring. Sorry

Good morning! I don't know Miss Darling Arts, but I would never intentionally steal anything from anyone. This all started last year after talking about the Petito case.
