Outdated means that other animals are living there already. The yellow marker means that it's partially met. You need a certain number of squares in the scan range. Also you can speed up your monorails by using the fast forward in the upper left of the screen. ^_^

A small change to this - outdated means that the tiles that were scanned have changed since the last scan. That can be because you placed or removed buildings, because a square of ground got purified by rain, etc. Anything that means that the location isn't exactly the same as the last time you scanned it will mark the area as outdated. Dead on for the yellow though - have to have x number of tiles for each critter!

Completing all four unlocks second maps in each biome. I’m finding Terra Nil to be a nice and chilled game, no rush or heavy thinking required. I’m hoping it’ll keep growing with more content as the base game is good.

You might have been able to use Rock Hoppers instead of the calcifying stations to build your monorail inland. You got them at the same time as the recycle station 25:12 .
