I think the best way for someone to go vegan is to make a decision to just do it and start making vegan choices. Don't worry about doing it perfectly just start making vegan decisions and you will naturally change without the stress.

I've distanced myself from people that still don't respect me being a vegan, or respect vegans in general, and they still talk about consuming meat and topics related ,like it's breathing oxygen.... in front of me. After days of that kind of thing, It's only when I snap back that they wake up out of that fog and leave me alone. Why do I always have to get to that point and always be the one to tolerate their shit.

The definition of veganism includes imperfection "veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose." YES we talk about medecine, eating animals by accident etc. not consciously and voluntarily eating animals and their secretions. We need to encourage people to reach the vegan lifestyle with kindness and facts, but too many people use the excuse "no one is perfect" to validate and feel less guilty about their actions.

The problem is with the wording "as far as possible and practicable", that's way too ambiguous, and all the crazy vegans (as opposed to the reasonable ones - basically 95% of the social media ones) read it as "if you have a medical condition where you have to eat some animal product to survive, then ok maybe we can make an exception for you, JUST MAYBE, BUT if you don't, then off with your head if you're not going vegan TODAY you animal abusing psychopath!"
@SomeFunkyKid
@SomeFunkyKid 2 жыл бұрын

@SourceChan
@SourceChan 2 жыл бұрын
To be a little more direct: it doesn't actually include imperfection at all when it's interpreted as "you're only allowed to eat non-vegan if not doing so is going to kill you due to some medical condition or similar", that is already basically perfectionism, all you're saying is "ok fine, we're not going to force you to kill yourself or kill you ourselves if you have a medical condition or exceptional circumstance that requires you to eat animal products" - wow, what bravery, what mercy, wow, such amazing, what a truly humanitarian position for not telling people to kill themselves, clap clap clap. When in reality there's no moral obligation or strong compelling reason to be a 100% strict vegan in general. I am, but there's no moral obligation or strong objective compelling reason to, I just do it because that's what I believe in, but others doesn't have to. Yes we should care about the animals, yes we should care about the planet, the environment, our health, etc etc, but not necessarily to perfection - to the exclusion of all else - that isn't a reasonable requirement. If I really enjoyed hunting squirrels or fishing once a year, are you really going to call me an animal abuser and exclude me from your club? I'm never going to since 1) I don't enjoy those things, and 2) I care about not hurting others needlessly - but the point I'm making is there's no requirements for others to do that to the exclusion of all else; you might not be a strict vegan if you hunt squirrels or fish once a year for fun, but it's pretty ridiculous and unreasonable to call anyone that does that an animal abuser psychopath. Actually I can give a compelling reason to fish once a year as well, one that might honestly interest me: to teach myself to fish and slay a fish in case society breaks down and I need to get my own food. Are you going to call me an animal abuser for doing that? Do you think that's reasonable? Should we call all vegetarians animal abusers as well? Everyone has to draw a line somewhere, so it's a genuine question, where do you draw the line to justify calling or screaming "animal abuser" in public to people you don't know anything about except that they hunt once a year or whatever, how do you justify it? Don't worry, if you don't have an answer and don't want to think about anything that might challenge your view, feel free to pretend you never read the message, putting fingers in your ears and pretend you've got it all figured out but refusing to engage anyone that disagrees with you on anything in conversation :)

Loved how both opinions could marry so well. I've read Ed's book and Tobias Leenaert's 'How to create a vegan world' and I think there is so much value in both pragmatism and idealism. I had my troubles with Ed's idealism until I really understood his conception of 'accountability' is actually a compassive approach towards not only animals but also the consumer. I think that can work perfectly in any debate and I'm definitely going to apply that
@SourceChan

I know my opinion here is unusual for a vegan, but I honestly feel like Ed isn't "idealistic" or reasonable enough, which is why I eventually unsubscribed from his channel after watching every single video on it and realizing in more recent videos he was letting me down and his entire youtube comment section is filled with absolutely insane zombies that can't have a conversation with anyone voicing a dissenting opinion or even just asking questions 99% of the time. Ed is maybe some of the closest to an open minded person of public vegan advocates/ecelebs, but to me he's just a middle of the road kind of guy, trying to "please" everyone, not ever taking any strong views for sort of "pro free speech" / open dialogue, and in fact shuts down conversations with interviews on his own channel when he doesn't like where it's going, in his past, like he talks about here, he did the same stuff just worse, he even lost his mind and starting cussing some dude out in public for "smirking" many years ago and then lied to the guys interviewing him making up a story about what "actually happened" that clearly didn't match with what they showed on video. Point being I can't really criticize Ed harshly because he's one of the most reasonable public animal rights activists/ecelebs, but he doesn't go far enough on pro-rationality takes imo, the online vegan movement as a whole is still a zombiefied echo chamber full of narcissists bickering over their superiority (not just vs other non-vegans but vegans vs vegans) instead of being open and interested in open dialogue, conversation, debate/discussion, etc, and Ed is kind of no different, he doesn't want open dialogue or discussion about difficult moral issues, philosophy, etc, he'll shut those conversations down immediately if he can on his channel etc, but he will virtue signaling how nice and smart and rational he is for not just copying what everyone else says by basically going "eh, we shouldn't be screaming all non-vegans are animal abusing r*pists I guess, I know, sorry for being controversial guys, hope you're not upset with me"

This conversation almost made me tear up, because I am trying to drive that idea home for three decades! If we punch and bash meat eater over the head, insulting them, etc., we can not establish a dialogue and won't change anybody's mind. So, who does that tactic really benefit(?) and I dare to say mostly the ego of the vegan, who lets out his anger and frustration and instills that feeling of superiority. Who is losing in this situation? The animals that we try to protect!! Instead reaching the hearts and minds of meat eaters and making a progressive change, including the health issue as well, we drive them away and make them shut down when they hear anything about veganism and plant based nutrition. I so hope that this interview is going to go viral within the community, but I am certain that it will receive a lot of resistance.

Thats nice and smart, but there is more and more evidence that actually meat is not just healthy but essential for humans. What can you do about that? Lets say hypothetically that if you eat a lot of meat, you will be calmer, stronger, healthier, more intelligent, you will have less illness when youre old, your mood will be better, you heal faster from injury and global warming woudnt be accelerated because of the raising of animals. If this was all true, would you be vegan, and would you try to turn others into vegans? Maybe we love meat so much because we as any other animal naturally have the ability to decide what is good food for us and we crave that good nutrition? Like you dont have to tell a lion or a cow what to eat, they instinctively know. Maybe humans are not an exception, and vegans are actually trying to fool they natural instincts by making vegan food that mimics, butter, cream, meat, fat, or whatever. I recently ate some (grass fed local) beef liver for the first time(i left most of it raw). Chocolate has a similar taste. Isnt it interesting?

@@danielfaller5617 Okay, I don't know where you get that information from and what studies those are and who funded those! The premise was for decades based on a cultural belief that animal flesh is an essential source of nutrients for the human body. 100 something years ago, having meat was reserved for Sundays after church, as a very special occasion. During the week, food was largely plant based. Later, through factory farming and large subsidies, meat became a daily occurrence and WITH IT, we started to have all kinds of serious health problems. This is proven and a scientific fact. Cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes and certain cancers are directly linked to meat consumption. Processed meats have been found to be class one and class two carcinogens, just a few years back. People with heart failures and other serious illnesses are being put on a (mostly, or only) plant based diet and diseases reversing. High performance athletes breaking personal bests and decreasing their recovery times and inflammation in their body drastically once switching to a plant based, vegan diet. This is information and research that shows more and more proof of exactly the opposite of what you are claiming. This is peer reviewed research. So, as much as I appreciate that you want to join this dialogue, you are doing it with completely outdated information. There is so much research out there, and one non-profit source of an M.D. that has an entire staff of science professionals that do nothing else but going through the hundreds of papers that are being published world wide and comparing them to each other. So, when this Dr. is talking about it on his website and KZbin channel, it is by far the most comprehensive research shown and source material is available. I sincerely suggest that you take a look at nutritionfacts.org by Dr. Greger. That's his website, and also the name of the KZbin channel. Please, visit that site and update your knowledge base. I don't say that to be mean, but helpful in your understanding. @@udornyc I just dont understand where the idea comes from that plant based diet is better in any way. Ok, some people got better after starting a plant based diet, but a lot of people got better after starting an all meat diet as well. And yes youre right diabetes and all that stuff started with when a lot of factories started making a lot of cheap food. However, a lot of it were vegeteble oils and refined carbs and chemicals, so its not at all the case that all these diseases could be linked to more meat. In fact search: "food pyramid and obesity correlation" Canelo Alvarez lost his title after becoming vegan. Jon Fitch switched back to eating meat after an "accidental" loosing streak and worse injuries. This is not exeptional, initially people say they feel good(maybe due to less processed garbage) and than it turns out that its not good at all. Search "total meat intake is associated with life expectancy". An other study showed that creatine supplements clearly increase cognitive function(basically iq): "Oral creatine monohydrate supplementation improves brain performance". Here is an other one "The influence of creatine supplementation on the cognitive functioning of vegetarians and omnivores". But meat has creatin naturally. How come, athletes are failing, babies are dieing and brain function decreases on a vegan diet and still, some people claim that its perfectly healthy? Finally just a funny thing: a youtubber did a challange of eating only broccoli for a week. he was in pain and couldnt do it. An other youtubber did an experiment of fasting for a week and he was fine. Seems like broccoli is worse than nothing. How can this happen when it is claimed to be so healthy?? Maybe broccoli is toxic? And if so, maybe people who make claims about how healthy vegetables are, have no clue what they are talking about? If you say ok a youtubber can fake anything, I challange you to try it.

@@danielfaller5617 The idea that a plant based diet is very healthy comes from all kinds of medical associations. From Mayo Clinic to the American Heart Association, American Cardiologists etc. Too many to mention, you must be living very isolated somehow. Btw., out of my own experience, I started to be a strict vegetarian and vegan in 1986, when I was a competitive full contact martial artist. I have been a very active athlete, including body building, technical scuba diving, mountaineering, inline speed skater, tennis player etc. all my life on a plant based diet. I have been learning about nutrition and health since 1986 and have met thousands of people like me in Europe and the past 30 years I am living here in the US. There were a few short times when I was eating meat in between and I always gained weight, had less energy, felt like I was in a brain fog and work out hurt more. As soon as I went back to eating plants, I got back to normal. If you never had that experience, you don't know what I am talking about. Your anecdotal contrarian "evidence" is not really holding up to scrutiny, because media is also sensationalizing things. If you eat oreos as your diet only, which is vegan, you will suffer malnutrition and it will be reported how bad the vegan diet is. Btw., I am turning 58 next year, people don't believe it and I am training to climb Denali by the end of next year, if time planning works out! It's just normal for me! You stay with your meat diet, and watch your risk of colon cancer increasing! It's your body and your health! Wondering why you, someone who beliefs this outdated info and is a proponent of a meat based diet, is even participating, or watching Plant Based News? I've learned not to call myself vegan because its perception is that most are militant vegans. And also that there are several different types of vegans (raw vegan, junk food vegan, etc.) that I'm not aligned with. Veganism encompasses animal rights, but it also is diet. You can't have one without the other. So in order to keep myself out of misunderstandings or being pegged as something that I'm not, I call myself 'plant-based'. It's much safer and realistic, and never gets the non-vegans panties in a bind.

It was a process for me. In 1994 i tried to go Vegan right away but it was too hard to find a lot of things so Vegetarian was easier to start and slowly took out more and more and by 2000-2001 the transition was easier more milk alternatives and choices. So over 20 years later i could never go back and i try my best with products etc. takes awhile to know the majority of ingredient and material etc names that are not plant based, cruelty free etc. i have always been non judgmental of what other people eat. Being aggressive never works, i have seen that in so many people. I use the term Plant based as these days if i say vegan or my friends tell people we meet i am vegan its the Oh one of those, while Plantbased seems to illicit less hostility strangely. Being understanding of my meat eating friends, they will happily eat at Vegan restaurants and try more cruelty free things. Its a process that the world is slowly knowing is the right way to go, wish it would move faster but change can take time, frustrating as that can be. And the "it's ok to be an imperfect vegan" argument is not helpful. 1. If a person's main concern is their own imperfection, they are often fake vegans or looking for excuses to fail. The "imperfection" issue is used as a Joker Clause. 2. This "not being perfect" issue is therefore manipulative on the part of the speaker, because it almost always goes hand in hand with NEVER mentioning animal torture, big ag, climate warming, starving African children, nor the plight of innocent animals, who never get the luxury of being " imperfect", because we torment & kill them.

In a world where avoiding animal products is a struggle, being a « perfect or imperfect vegan » is not the issue. The important question is whether the person is actively working to de-condition themselves from speciesism. There are vegans who are almost 100% vegans and who make ultra-speciesist statements... these people are not so much changing society. There are 95% vegans who are perfectly anti-speciesist: and their cultural influence on those around them is very important. ✊🏼 Veganism is a major economic and political cultural change. It is a matter of working towards this, and of being at least a little consistent with it in the way we consume. But the real important thing - the horizon - is to push back the speciesist mentality.

Fisheries using fungus ( that are harmful to humans) and plant fiber paper factory waste to produce deep water ocean fishery farm feed. Not to mention all of the brewery, grain mill, juice production, canned vegetable factory, vegetable oil production, and failed crop waste use in livestock feed to food conversion. I’m also curious about what the community thinks about biogas from animal management, farm byproducts to insect and isopod conversion, biofuels such as butanol from farm waste and livestock byproducts.

@Homie Niger 🇳🇪 is in the Sahara region it’s over 80% dessert land. They are employing native trees and grasses to create forest grass lands. Masanobu Fukuoka's seeds of the desert is a Japanese rice 🍚 farming method based in Japan for its volcanic soils. It’s a great method for organic rice farming, and decreasing consumption of sea caught wild animals in Japan 🇯🇵. Niger 🇳🇪 is using FMNR method with its own unique biological system of trees and grasses. Lower ( than Japan) annual rain 🌧 and wind erosion is not permitting farmers to grow high yields of crops. And the method does force local breeds of goats and cattle to convert inedible plants into food sources for humans. It is exploiting the animals natural resources for humans. But I do see that if this remote area with its growing population has to utilize all of its resources to stop starvation in humans, then I agree with it. Yes I am vegetarian for allergy reasons, but I live in North America 🇺🇸 where I have an abundance of vegan and vegetarian options. It’s not always the same. Even for some of family members who live on marginal land. Some of my family members raise high protein nutrient dense animal protein on steep, rocky, shallow soil land to feed their family. They don’t have a disposable income for vegan supplemented diet. Their argument is that some of the livestock has one bad day on the farm. I now it’s not fair that animals are exploited by humans but most people are completely comfortable with slaughtering, milking, collecting eggs from animals to feed our human race. That hypothetical person that Minai Delgado describes, who is trying so hard but still eats meat, dairy and eggs six meals out of the week, is not doing anything at all. Ditto for vegetarians. His one day a week is offset by the six other days, and he has obviously not understood that when talking about injustice and immorality doing less is not the measure. So, we should give kudos to the person who cuts back on owning slaves--just a few, so better right? Or, a group that will engage in less forced genital mutilation. If someone will engage in child abuse less frequently, that's ok?! Also, you can't shame anyone who doesn't have something to be ashamed of. For example, you can't make me feel shame for being vegan. I think Ed was toned down to try to be agreeable because he knows everything i just wrote--I have heard him say as much. His point about approach is simply that he found a certain way to be ineffective. However, debate on moral issues is always ineffective unless the person is already curious. The diehard who just wants to debate is interested in hearing himself talk --such a discussion is a waste of time ( or worse in giving a platform to such a person and his ingrained ideas) and it doesn't matter how diplomatically you address him. The fact that Ed can't debate his family members into being vegan is good proof,.

Eds arguments are not great here. He says if he refrains from perceived confrontational vegan activist behavior then people's defenses will drop & they will be more open. We in the minority community know this is untrue. Ed, like many, earnest but simplistic personality types, never seem to understand that accusations & biases are often RHETORICAL; no matter how you behave, you will be negatively labeled by some stereotype, especially when your opponent is losing an argument, which they will certainly do if they are arguing against veganism. Activist Regan Russell r.i.p. was feeding & comforting pigs, bothering noone, when her very presence irritated a certain truck driver. Every vegan has noted the hyperbolic, reactionary, as hominem arguments of non vegans: "Look, all you have to do is just value an animals life over a fleeting taste on your tounge..." "OH MY GOD YOU ARE MILITANT YOU ARE A CULTIST YOU HATE PEOPLE BLAH BLAH BLAAAAHH!" "No, bacon consumption is militant; at the expense of your health your planet & your empathy for helpless animals" "SEE? SEE? LIKE I SAID: MILITANT!" Getting past this reflexive nonsense takes strategy, not playing non-confrontational. We need to teach vegans how to DEAL WITH conflict, not pour sugar all over it. Vegan for lifeⓋ

It's disappointing hearing Nimai advocate for reducetarian nonsense. I guess this kind of rhetoric shouldn't be a surprise coming from someone who posts 100x more pics of their abs than posts speaking about animals. Nimai should know that becoming vegan really isn't difficult. Holding people accountable for not supporting industries that abuse and kill animals isn't asking for much, and I think it should be expected. I'm sure most vegans have accidently eaten something non-vegan at one time or bought something they were unaware contained animal products. However, once finding out we've accidently made a mistake, we learn from it and move on, being more cautious not to make the same mistake again. Veganism does not equate to perfectionism but strives towards it. Additionally, what conviction do reducetarians have to eliminate 1 meal containing animal products a week? If they truly care about animals, they wouldn't want to support industries that abuse animals and would want to ditch all animal products altogether. As vegans, we can praise people for taking small steps while continuing to advocate for them to eliminate all animal products from their diets without being hostile. Ed makes a good point towards the end about how we need to hold people accountable, whereas Nimai seems fine with people becoming complacent. These complacent people can easily become vegan once they're properly informed. We need to remember that the reduction of someone's animal product consumption means nothing to the animals they are still eating.

@@ikg459 it’s a sad fact that if you want to eat anything at all, animals must die. Being vegan is about doing the least harm to animals, which is what I do. When we plough fields, spray insecticides and harvest crops, a large number of animals die - sometimes purposely and - horribly in the process. Only one animal dies a year for my pasture raised food, and it is slaughtered humanely. I think I am a much better vegan than those who only eat plants.

My vegan imperfection view on WOOL - hear me out; I still purchase running socks with a 7% merino wool content. Assurance by the manufacturer - anti mulesing and fair trade. Perhaps this makes it less likely that the shearers are kicking and abusing the animals in the process - I don't know? Have tried a couple of fully synthetic alternatives - but not found anything as good and can't afford to waste lots of money on expensive socks that will never be used. Plus - they are generally very long lasting socks. Under no illusion that the sheep being 'used' are probably still destined for premature slaughter but here's my question; Why is it that wool cannot be a potentially vegan and symbiotic product - in small quantities anyway? I could imagine that - depending on the season - the sheep may actually enjoy having no coat and anyhow could be 'pampered' more to make up for it - maybe? Am I wrong? And I certainly don't see why the sheep (or goat, etc) has to live a shortened and unhappy life to give up it's wool now and again? Not saying that I will not stop searching for an eqivalent vegan alternative in the future - but for the time being that's my justification. I'm not blaming myself for that one - I'm blaming the system!

There is a lot of greenwashing in the wool industry. It uses a ton of land and water as well. personally I find a lot of grey zones with shoes, that should be durable (not like eating every day), especially shoes where synthetic ones can be really bad for the feet. They have to be comfortable and there is a time-resource constraint finding the right ones. Just my experience but the label vegan with a high price tag, does not necessarily mean better or long-lasting. I try to only buy what I need. If I find the vegan option that works great. If not - I do so much activism and am 100% with food (also organic, most regional/national/ EU - I won't beat myself up about it. Or anyone else.

can relate. I have a wallet made of suede and a down jacket I bought before I was vegan. I still use them every day as they are expensive to replace and it would be more ethical to use them rather than buy an alternative. If I were to buy an alternative, I would have to donate them and someone would end up using items that are already paid for anyways. Sometimes it makes me uncomfortable, but there is no right answer I think. I also think it's morally permissible to wear them, but maybe don't wear them 'out of respect for the lives they lost.' It can never be respectful to wear someone's skin. Instead, we can only look forward and make more ethical choices.
