@@UnleashTheGhoulsI've watched the movie and read the graphic novel and I'd say they made Nimona more sympathetic and less dark for the movie, which I think was the right choice, because it makes her sacrifice at the end more emotional, for me at least.

There is a reason for Nimona's ability to return, I strongly reccommend the comic as the story points are the same, but is done differently, and adds more to Nimona's background. Love the movie as a standalone, though. Both versions are fantastic! (I, too, enjoy a bittersweet ending, but the way it cut off, censoring him, was hilarious.)

i really dont remember the comic, i meant to reread the physical copy i had before the movie came out (oops i lost it), but i kept thinking to myself "nimona is 1000 years old, they seem to be a supernatural force of nature...this wouldnt actually kill them, would it? the institute couldnt have known for certain this would kill them, they just assumed it would the same way they assume nimona is a monster" i think im really fascinated by characters who subvert the narrative by being unable to die in traditional dramatic ways. and i think nimona is pretty punk for that

The main meaning I took from this movie is that when we spend too much time hating or fearing someone or something and trying to get rid of it, especially when that fear is unwarranted, then we only end up doing more harm. When people were accepting of Nimona, things went well, like with her friendship with Cloreth. But the moment people went against her, feared her, and attacked her, then suddenly things got set on fire, not because of Nimona, but because of the fear against her. This is then seen again with the Director. She fears this ‘monster’ so much that she would wipe out half of the entire city just to try and get rid of it. Even after Nimona turned back into just a girl she still fires the weapon. It’s a great message that shows how unnecessary hatred and fear harms not just the people who are hated, but instead harms everyone. The best real world example of this for me is trans people and bathrooms. Transphobes are so scared and disturbed by trans people using the bathroom and claiming it makes others uncomfortable that they end up harassing strangers just trying to use the bathroom. And those strangers include both cis- and trans people. I am terrified of using the bathroom, not because of trans people, but because of transphobes. It’s so frustrating and scary to see how people can get so involved in their hatred that they end up causing the problem they want to solve. Seeing that portrayed here is very meaningful, and is probably my favorite part of the movie.
@dominicansolx

I was liking your comment until you brought the bathroom issue. The problem with the bathroom is not that people are feeling off by a transperson using them. The problem is that not everyone is trustworthy. And as it has already happened, some guy will go to the bathroom, claim trans status, and do things to woman that I won't even dare say in this comment. As it has already happened. Their is a saying in my country: "The just will always pay for the sinner."

@@dominicansolxmy school had an open all genders bathroom when I was in highschool. Boys on the right, girls on the left, sinks in the middle no urinals. The only difference between the girls and boys side is the girls had tampon machines and bins in their stalls. It worked great biggest issue was with people sneaking out of class and having sex in them but I dont think you're ever gonna stop teens from doing that. I personally enjoyed it cause I get pee shy and when a urinal is free I feel bad about taking a stall. Since the only option was stalls that wasn't an issue.
@toastingpasta
@toastingpasta Жыл бұрын
@@dominicansolx The problem IS that some people don't want trans people using the bathroom that they chose. If a cisgender guy wants to go into the women's bathroom and attack someone, nothing is stopping him. There is no barrier or security guard at the door making people state their gender in order to be allowed in. It's obviously terrible that these things happen; but they are not the fault of trans people. What I'm talking about in my comment is not when people are doing does terrible things; it's when someone just goes to the bathroom and gets harassed over it. There are several stories online about people who gets accused of things, asked invasive questions, get yelled at, kicked out, or even physically attacked because they use the bathroom. This even happens to gender-nonconforming cisgender women in the women's bathroom, because someone transphobic will see them, assume they are a trans woman, and by extension, assume they are dangerous. This is were hate becomes the problem it wishes to destroy, because these people think they are attacking someone who is dangerous, just as Nimona was attacked, but the reality is that their efforts only hurt the very people they were aiming to protect. Does this mean you can't call out anyone who uses the bathroom? No, obviously not. Bad people do exist, and if someone is going into the bathroom and making others uncomfortable, they should get kicked out, but again, that does not have anything to do with trans people. If a cisgender woman is making someone uncomfortable on purpose they should also get kicked out. You should judge someone based on their actions: Not based on their looks or on stereotypes. In regards to Nimona, this could also happen. If Nimona, or someone else with similar abilities, had actually done all the terrible things they claimed she did, then she should absolutely not be allowed in the kingdom and the hate and fear would be justified. But she hasn't done anything bad (if you exclude her chaotic nature), just as most trans people haven't done anything bad either. The few bad people should be punished, but the effort to do that is not worth harming the innocent. And those innocent people who get harmed is based on that hatred and fear towards trans people, ergo, people not liking trans people IS causing fear.

@@toastingpasta There is thing stopping normal men from going to the bathroom of a woman. And that is the well defined lines through the destruction of reputation and use of lawful police force to call upon them to stop someone trying to do horrible things to woman. BUT... if you claim you are trans today... Well, you could say it is like having a jail free card in many cases due to people being afraid of bullying and crazy radical activism in social media. But whatever. Life will continue even with misery of others like it has always have
@toastingpasta
@toastingpasta Жыл бұрын
@@dominicansolx I don't think men who does things like that against women are worried about breaking the law or upholding their reputation. There is a reason MeToo is such a big movement; because stuff like this is normalized, and that's horrible. But that has nothing to do with people just using the bathroom and them getting attacked for it. It has to do with decades old sexism and the like. Stuff like that also rarely happens randomly in public, majority of cases are with people you know, like an ex, a boss, or similar. The "jail-free card" is complete bs. If a trans person does bad things, they are going to jail as well. In fact, if you count in bias' in law enforcements they are probably way more likely to get punishments than cisgender guys. There is literally a plethora of cisgender guys doing this completely in the open, and with evidence to prove it, who gets away with it, while a trans person can get jailtime for just walking down the street. What I'm arguing for is transphobic people attacking others for just using the bathroom, I'm in no way saying we should allow anyone to be attacked.

As someone who read the book, there is actually heavy implication that Nimona was alive at the end of the book in the epilogue, and Ballisters and Nimonas relationship didn't exactly end on a sweet note, I think the ending to the movie changed it up enough for it to be a more unique take which honestly makes me like the ending a little more, then again the movies ending does go against the full circle idea you mentioned, so I guess it's still a catch 22.

No, it wouldn't of "you have to die in order for society to accept you" would have been an aweful final note for Nimona's character. Not to mention the fact she literally just got talked down from an attempt on her life. Heroic sacrifice is not the answer either. Let the girl be happy please. (In this case I love bittersweet endings in general it just would have undercut/made toxic almost all of the great sub textual work this movie did).

I knew she would come back, because of how she is and she changed into a phoenix. Their whole thing is coming back. But it would also be good if she laid low for a bit. She probably did. We don’t really know how long it was at the end. But I liked it, I liked how Nimona was this ancient special and free power of nature. That story she tell’s about the well is probably just based on her time with Goreth. We did see she used to be alone, but don’t know for how long or what she started as. She just changes into whatever she feels like. It doesn’t matter what she is, because we know who she is. Then there’s the part that just bothers me that I thought about it that way. It can probably be called woke and whatever and that’s why I kind of noticed there’s like only 3 white characters. The two bad guys and the “hero”. The white girl who can do everything have to come in and save the brown guy and his pretty Asian bf who’s the best, from the stereotypical white guy bully and a white woman who want to do it as they have done it the last thousand years. She even kill the black woman with power who wanted to change things. There isn’t even anyone else from the royal family around. Does anything even change by the queen being killed. Why does the director of the knight school take over the city after her death. Who made the decision to keep the hole instead of fixing it when both the queen and the director was dead

Well, I mean the last one's easy. The whole movie is about dismantling power structures. It wouldn't work if people went back to living the same way after the one bad apple was removed. Also, we see people pull what the director did irl. When someone powerful in charge of the army decides they're in control after a figurehead is killed... bigger army diplomacy tends to result in them taking the top seat even if it's not legally under their control.

Also, Nimona is an allegory for the queer community. Read that way the white gnc/genderfluid girl Nimona sticks for the gay/bipoc Bal looks like a call for solidarity among all marginalized groups to fight the system that hurts them rather than fighting eachother for the scraps society offers.

@@jamesheinrich5338 Idk that that's possible. This story's run its course and, more importantly you have to undo the ambiguity of the ending to continue writing in this world. Idk that it would be a good choice since you're cutting into the "Nimona is Nimona" message the end of this movie left us with. Also, while I like the implication of exploring out beyond the walls I don't think a sequel could live up to everyone's expectations in that regard. Since any conflict with monsters risks twisting all of the positive connotations with the queer experience from the first movie into sinister portrayals. Similarly, if there aren't any actual monsters what's the plot? Like, I'd love to see a movie about building incentive systems that will stop this kind of oppression in the future but idk how that would work as a movie. In other words: I also want more of this universe but, any future movies in the franchise would be burdened with all the bs ND Stevenson had to gloss over to make the movie work was real. Like, most fantasy/scifi series suffer from this but stories that specifically focus on changing the status quo do even harder because of how the possibility space is cutdown. You end up cheapening the victory to the last movie if the threat is similar and if it isn't a story about a queer girl and her gay adopted dad overthrowing tyranny... is it even Nimona? Also, also, we got the best cliff notes version of this story already. I don't need to see the second best material this world has to offer.

It would be AWESOME to have a sequel. I’d be stoked but there’s a few things that I think kinda keeps that from happening. The premise of the movie circles around clearing names, busting misnomers and changing views. In the end of the movie, all of those things are achieved, Bal is no longer seen as a villain, Nimona is no longer a “monster”, the outside world is no longer feared and the system in which the city was controlled by has been over thrown. If there were to be a sequel, a continuation of Balister and Nimona’s adventures, I don’t know what it would be about, what conflict(s) they would have to overcome. Another HUGE thing about having a sequel was that this was supposed to be Blue Sky’s last movie which kinda throws out getting another movie out of them despite its story :/ But if they reconsidered that’d be awesome. Or if another studio took it on but what makes me nervous about that is that the studio would have a lot to live up to since this first movie is beautiful and it’s up-to-interpretation ending is kinda perfect and could be left alone and still be wonderful

I don't think Nimona will be prone to being labeled as "woke" for the same reason we don't hear much buzz about The Dragon Prince or Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts being labeled as "woke" - like them, it's an original IP that is presented WELL, with a great story. The "woke" elements are organic and feel natural, not like a blow to the head from a vindictive and authoritarian morality hammer, or a baiting narcissistic "neener neener, we got your beloved IP character and now he's (gay, trans, or just there to make the new Mary Sue character look good by being an incompetent moron by comparison)!".

In her way to save citizens, she change form to not dragon. not monster. but a phoenix, so she litelary can revive herself after some time. As an autistic person I can kinda relate with Nimona since society has been somewhat against Autism with ABA and Autism Speaks existing people seem to want to find a cure just because they don’t understand or don’t want to take the time to do so. I’ve gotten into arguments on Facebook with the Baby food and ibuprofen causing autism. People act as though being diagnosed with autism is the worst news ( but I’ve heard worse) it’s as though they’d rather have people diagnosed with Cancer or Polio over what I have. I disagree that Nimona should have stayed dead. It has to do with how she went out. Nimona wasn't flying at the cannon as a noble sacrifice, she literally said she was going to "break stuff". If anyone could be said to have a noble sacrifice, it would have been the Director. Her goal was to take out the "monster" no matter the cost, whether that be hundreds of civilian casualties, or even as it happened, herself. If Nimona stayed dead, despite the changes that were brought about, the Director still would have basically won. From the Director's point of view, if Nimona had been killed, she would have been utterly vindicated for all her actions. From her perspective, she is the noble hero who ultimately slayed the monster that the city's founder Gloreth had defeated hundreds of years before. The city is saved and will henceforth be safe from the Monster because of her actions, and if her life must be sacrificed to achieve this, then so be it. The old queen's weaknesses alowed for this monster to invade their city, so having her be slain was the right move, and framing the commoner who thought he could be equal to the nobility would ensure that common blood would never stain the ranks of Gloreth's knights. Only by Nimona surviving could the Director be said to have failed in her goals, and it would make the message much more muddled if she had not. If it had been framed more like The Iron Giant sacrificing himself to the nuke to protect Hogarth and the town, her staying dead could have potentially worked narratively, but not the way it was written here.

I like it, they (lgbtq) made their own stories, great animation, good dialogue and most importantly, the messages aren't all up in your face, it's for the viewers to piece it together (not that it's hard mind you) and simply allows itself to be a movie, it's own experience that doesn't feel the need to jumpstart something or try to belittle something else. It's nothing groundbreaking, but it's a solid movie. My only real issue was the buildup to nimona's transformation, it felt stupid for bal to be like "you manipulated me into being your friend so you weren't alone". Like, he saw her confess to killing the queen and talking stupid in 4K, why on earth would he be calling her monster and all that crap. But other than that, Solid movie a step in the right direction imo.

One thing that I'm a bit unsure of with this movie is this; just how many people has Nimona killed? She seems to be super willing to murder and torture people, innocent or otherwise, and she's lived for at least hundreds if not thousands of years. She doesn't seem to have matured beyond the mindset of a rebellious teenager, despite being older than the city itself, let alone everyone in it. If everything she says is not meant to be taken at face value, and rather just as part of her punk rock aesthetic, then she absolutely deserves ultimate vindication, but if this murderous mindset is actually indicative of a history of murder and/or torture of perceived enemies, then I'm sorry to say it, but the city would be right to fear and ostracize her, even more so than they had in the movie.

I really expected the movie to address that at some point. When Nimona had that sad moment with the little kid I thought they were giving her some introspection. "I'm acting like the monster they think I am" But that never really happens? Nobody ever points out to her that maybe violently lashing out at everyone around her is just making people's perception of her worse. It's my only issue with the movie, but I think it's a pretty big problem that this is never addressed.

Also couldn’t always relate to their choices like why go back to the city in broad daylight or meet at the pub and argue loudly, sometimes felt like there weren’t any real consequences. It didn’t feel like a woke movie and it was a triumph in it didn’t force an agenda. Felt more like a classic Disney movie without laborious songs. I think the ending was cool but her becoming a monster was a catastrophe to the city and I’m sure had many casualties which she’d have to be accountable for surely. Besides all that some amazing story writing and plot points and fluid electric animation. Obviously a win for broader casted movies definitely a step forward for movies as a whole ✨

spoilers the ending makes sense though if you pay attention to her form she chooses. She turns into a phoenix and phoenix rise from the ashes of death. Just like she did she did really die. that wasn't taken away from the ending this time.

alright but i kinda see why they brang nimona back, she had turned into what seemed to be a phoenix at the end. and what does a phoenix represent, rebirth. now it's just a hunch but i find it acceptable in my mind.

She lives in the graphic novel too. But she doesnt stay with balister. She melts back into the world becoming an inigma, leaving balister to look everywhere wondering if shes still there. Oh and also nimona slices goldenloin across the face and fucks up his leg, leaving him just as disabled as balister.

Thank you for this review! I love the movie, and I've been bingeing reviews, and it feels like a lot of reviewers missed the point of the movie. The narrative, character design, and even the voice acting choices (two of the main characters are voiced by POC, one of whom is openly gay!) are inseparable from the themes. Hearing some people dismiss what I felt were very important and heartfelt parts of the story (like the Director ending up being the Big Bad or Ambrosius's struggle between loyalty to a system and loyalty to his heart), made me afraid that maybe the themes weren't getting through to the general audience, but I see that it's more a matter of perspective, and regardless, it's a beautiful film.

This movie is absolutely gorgeous. But there is one big problem that really bugs me. I really expected the movie to address her violent tendencies at some point. But nobody does? When Nimona had that sad moment with the little kid I thought they were giving her some introspection. "I'm acting like the monster they think I am" But that never really happens? Nobody ever points out to her that maybe violently lashing out at everyone around her is just making people's perception of her worse. It's my only issue with the movie, but I think it's a pretty big problem that this is never addressed.

@@laidbackbeau My point is that through the movie Nimona has a very defeatist mindset. She says to Ballister in the prison: "Once they see you as a villain that's all you are" And a little later says: "We're villains! Embrace it!" So she's stuck in this self-destructive loop. If everyone sees her as a Villain, then she might as well act like one. They believe she's a villain, so she behaves like a villain, which just confirms their beliefs. The only reason she's attached herself to Ballister is because he's an outcast like her, as she's completely given up fitting in with society at large. In short: She's purposely isolating herself from everyone by acting the part they've placed on her. Completely understandable. But I just wish this would've been called out as bad behavior that's only making things worse.

I also have mixed feelings about the ending. It would have been, I think, a much stronger ending if she had been really dead. But in Disney-esque fashion, Dead heroes are never really dead. (Except in the Lion King.) But if Nimona had given her life, there could not be a sequel.

Saw the movie three times and let me review.The animation is great although I was expecting a comic book look the type of animation spiderverse uses but I would give it an 8/10.The characters have nice personalities and are funny 10/10.The pacing and storyline is great and the chaos keeps up with it.9.7/10 and the final rating j would give is a 9.5/10.I would improve the movie by making it more serious.

It’s a bit more woke than the book a little less subtle and the story was a bit different from the book,but I liked the movie and I think the pushing as well as diffraction from the source is a result of it being a single movie and not a whole comic series. Also in the book whitest she didn’t die she did leave and blend away hidden as a shapeshifter not to be seen again by balister. Overal good movie great graphic novel

I'm a huge fan of the graphic novel, and I think you would have liked that ending better (Spoiler alert if you ever do want to read it) ____ But at the end, while it is confirmed that she is still around, she doesn't stick around with Ballister. He is left wondering if she is around the corner as a cat or a stranger or another creature, or if she has moved on. The graphic novel in general has some striking differences, and is much darker in tone. I love both works to pieces, however, and resonate so much with those DLC themes you were talking about!

Sorry I’m bad with the names lol but do you guys agree with the plot whole can someone explain this plot hole ?

Elementary school teacher weighing in to help you resolve your angst about different possible endings. This could have been a great movie, and so important to queer people currently ages 11 to 15 trying to sort themselves out, but the dying embers depicting Nimona's end are not "poignant" - they are demoralizing. Ask any older person of color (or woman) forced to watch movie after movie where the secondary minority character had to die so the heroes could be motivated to succeed in their name, and the response would be "Ugh." I wish I could convey what it was like to watch Billy Dee Williams NOT die in Star Wars. (The Grand Lake Theater in Oakland CA was in went full on roar - no one could hear any of the movie for the next five minutes. Best movie going experience ever!) Imagine the effect of Nimona's demise on tween and teen queer students trying to sort themselves out...they may be thinking, "THAT's what I'm supposed to do? Sacrifice myself? Even an LGBTQ positive movie for kids says so?" If that were where the movie ended, that would pretty messed up, in my opinion. No, there should not be a corny as heck secondary minority character death for the sake of poignancy. Yes, there should be a sequel, so that the Director (here I mean the MOVIE director, not the character in the movie) can fix this emotional mess we're left with. We need to see what it is Nimona returns as, and learn why they've chosen that form. A referral to a hot line is so not enough, movie makers. Young people watching that are in pain now, and you've added to that pain in the kind of Do better. Do MORE. Start now.

I go back and forth on the ending. I don’t think Nimona should have actually died but I also think the ending, while funny, is too abrupt as an Epilogue where Nimona is actually fully accepted would have really tightened up the story. Really wouldn’t mind a sequel or spin off show though, these characters and this world are too interesting for a one off imo.

I'm usualy against woke agenda movies cuz they are so forced and blunt and over the top they miss the nuance of the situation, but nimona was legit an awesome watch. Only one thing that irked me was the hole "small minded questions" thing from the train scene, if you want people to understand you better those "small minded questions" is what can make the difference in making someone understand your situation and have them shrug at your existence and not care. If that narrow-visioned phrase weren't in the movie i think this movie would have been the perfect movie, but calling people who ask questions small-minded diminishes the efforts those people try to make to understand the situation better. The reason i'm not racist or homophobic or anything (in spite me living in a very traditional and religious country) is because at one point in my life i asked those "small minded questions" and the people i asked had the patience to explain to me and make me understand that in the end even tho we look different it's still the same people, same confusions, same needs, same wants inside. Literally everything about the movie i think was a perfect show of emotions and internal improvement, but that one scene kicks that perfect movie in the gonads by saying "i can't make the effort to answer all your questions but you should make the effort to understand me even though you have no knowledge of my life experience". There are no such thing as small minded questions. Every question, even if completely moronic, at some point has still helped in some discovery or some understanding if taken seriously. Think of the dumbest question you can ask and ask 1000 people to give you serious answers and see what you get. Regardless, this is the right path for movies to take. Instead of shoving woke literal shit down ppl's throats by destroying and making old stuff people like into shit (making ppl hate woke shit even more), make new stories that fit the morals you want to inspire in people and tell those stories well enough to make people want to watch and learn from them (with characters that don't have their personalities reduced to the woke shit but instead have amazing complex personality like nimona, i absolutely love nimona's personality)
