Well, i’m not somebody that would have realized it, but after looking online, apparently Sarah hit Alice in the head with a rabbit trap. Later she talks about how Alice was always rescuing animals. I would say that the white rabbit is Alice who can periodically possess Mia. I think being in rabbit form was a nod to the murder. One that only Sarah would be spooked by and understand. Then Mia makes the rabbit mask, another tease to the murder but that now Mia is Alice. As Alice makes more appearances and grows more angry, Sarah can’t handle the reality of what she did. Run, rabbit, run seems like a reference to the rabbit trap that Alice was hit with, that ultimately lead to the murder. If the rabbit is running, it’s not injured in the trap. I would guess it’s Sarah’s wish that none of it had happened, but not being able to escape what she did, so still being caught in the trap

I think there may not be a supernatural element at all, my theory is that it's all in Sarah's head. She killed her sister when she was 7 years old and never told anyone about it. Her mother wasted her life waiting for Alice to return and now she has dementia. Sarah's marriage fell apart, her father died and now her own daughter is turning 7 and looks very similar to her sister. There are several indications that Sarah had mental health issues before (like the full medicine cabinet, her ex asking her to let him know if she isn't well etc) and now she just can't suppress her past anymore and goes into full psychosis. Mia may appear to be a creepy child but if you look closer, she could just be afraid of her mother. When she says she misses her real mummy, Sarah just assumes that she means Joan because she also asks to see her (she's Mia's grandmother after all and she doesn't have many people in her life - look at her sad birthday "party"). She might be missing the mother Sarah was before, when she didn't lash out at 3 year olds, forget to pick her up from school or slam her hand in the car door. And when Joan mistakes her for Alice because they look similar and tells her how much she loves her, maybe she does want to be Alice. I think the rabbit isn't just a nod to Alice in Wonderland (the whole movie could have done without that reference), the rabbbit also stands for Mia ("Bunny") that should run away from her mother while there's still time. We hear that Sarah used to help her father check the rabbit traps but Alice didn't want to because she liked animals, then Sarah hit her with a rabbit trap. And I think Sarah actually kills the rabbit when it bites her, Mia sees the whole thing and starts to act out the way she did, which sends her mother further into psychosis so she ends up killing everyone that's left. A very dark movie but I like slow burn and psychological horror so I enjoyed it.

@@annaf3915 i do still think that Sarah had a full mental break with reality towards the end. Everything after she recalls killing her sister. The house was a wreck. Shattered glass all over and the dad saw that. He saw it all. It’s all cleaned up by morning and everything is in order. He was asleep in the bed, in the same room as Mia that night. I think he said that he wouldn’t leave her alone with Sarah, after cleaning it all up. We next see his body in the morning. But he’s face down, not moving, with a pillow placed over his head. This certainly appears that she killed him. Perhaps to stop him from taking Mia with him in the morning. Or maybe to hide that she killed Mia- from herself and from him. The two girls walking away together says to me that they are both dead. They’re able to see each other and interact together. But we don’t know exactly how or when she died. I assume we’re suppose to feel as Sarah does. We don’t know because Sarah doesn’t allow herself to know Edited to add; My best guess, after looking at some scenes again, is that Sarah killed Mia when she chased her and called her Alice. Mia was terrified. It’s also very possible that Sarah did see Mia’s body in the water and it really was her. But Sarah imagines finding Mia safe to block it out. We never hear Mia speak as herself after her mom chases her. Even in the bed, she is speaking as Alice, not Mia. Sarah could have smashed the dad’s skull when he arrived frantically looking for his daughter. Then Sarah drags his body to the bed so that in her mind, he is just sleeping. The pillow covers his fractured skull. Mia was not ever in the bed, if you observe the odd way she slides straight down. A living child would sit up and move her mom’s arm. So Mia is dead in the water below, and dad is laying dead in the bed. But Sarah is lost in delusion.

it would have been so cool for it to be a lot brighter. not only would i actually have been able to see what i was watching, but also it would put a twist on the tranquility and beauty of bright colors, a beauty we see in Alice in Wonderland.

I actually enjoyed trying to figure out how the movie was going to end, even though I was disappointed in the ending. I wish they had tied everything up in the end instead of leaving us guessing. Even though I liked the. movie, I have too many questions, which. maybe is the reason I liked it. I enjoy having to think during a movie.

I have a question: (potential spoiler) Did Sarah murder her husband at the end? He was lying with a pillow over his face like he'd been smothered.

I don’t buy a lot of these references to Alice in Wonderland you’re proposing. Also think people who haven’t experienced motherhood wouldn’t grok the existential dread of the thing you’re most guilty for manifesting in your daughter. Or the dread of hurting your own child in a panic or being responsible for her neglect because you’re preoccupied with grief, or your child turning against you, or reenacting your generational trauma.

I’m not a mother and I can 100% understand everything you said. It’s a worst fear even if you aren’t a parent. I’m hypersensitive and very empathetic. I won’t pass whatever I have onto a child. (I think I have a thing ha) I do think the references were a bit of a stretch but I can appreciate that they came to his mind.

The purpose of the rabbit could be that it brought about the possession of Mia and took Sarah swirling down the rabbit hole. The rabbit there and the garage door open to all the stuff stored there. When she tried to drop it over the fence, the rabbit was not having it and it mark festered into a full blown out infection on Sara's hand (that murdered). Did anyone else notice there was always like a storm brewing at her house? Just too much symbolic stuff, wasn't it mentioned that her father was coming back as a bird and did she not seem to hit a bird with her car. The music (sound?) that was supposed to be hunting by using didgeridoos was getting on my last nerve. The movie took too long and At the end Sara has probably killed every last one of her family members, including her mom (because worker left her alone there when she should not been there in the first place) because she was not escorted out the room, she had plenty of time to kill her mother.

I’m a total Alice in Wonderland/through the looking glass nerd. And the 1988 film ‘Alice’ is one of my favourite films. It’s the perfect kind of weirdness for that story. I didn’t dislike Run Rabbit Run, but I really didn’t get why it kept cutting to the white rabbit (other than for obvious reference reasons). I kept thinking it was going to tie in somehow, like maybe Sarah would kill it or something (especially when she told Mia about the animal traps her sister didn’t like). But no. Nothing like that. It’s just there totally randomly.
