Steve: I am sorry you never got to see her - she could be absolutely magnificent when she was feeling happy and well - which is how she was the first time I saw her. Luckily, she played in London a lot after about 1975 or so - so I saw her many times. Sometimes she was in pain and it showed - but other times the genius never left her and one could find that in the same show.

David Holiday About Nina. When I was about 19 years old 1964, I moved to NY from outside of Pittsburgh. Was walking past The Village Gate where Nina was playing. At that time I had very little money. Men were outside trying to talk you into coming to see her. Had enough money in my pocket but wouldn’t have enough to eat the rest of the week. Decided not to see her. I just turned 75. In all my years the one thing I regret in my life was not seeing her that night. I am white, not that it matters. Take a walk everyday, and listen to some of her music while walking. RIP NINA.
@davidholiday44944 жыл бұрын
@@586105 Hi Steve: I am so sorry you were never able to see Nina live. However, we all have to make difficult decisions at one time or another. One time when I saw her in London she seemed in a disturbed state. The previous time in London whe was ecstatic. Anyway, she asked for people to leave notes on her piano (solo show) as she needed friends. I was in the first row - I left a note asking her what was wrong as she had played so beautifully before. She found my note and asked me to come to the stage. She asked me how I knew something was wrong and I told her. She then said I was correct - I kept telling her how important she is to people and that we all loved her - she kissed me on the lips, saying thank you!!!! I was absolutely astounded. I had been kissed by a great idol of mine. She was in pain. Unfortunately, that marked the begin of a slow decline that was visible in most of her shows after that time. She played a number of seasons at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in London - where I saw her a number of times afterward. As I said previously, there were moments of genius and moments of torment. She was eventually fired by the club because she was late, drunk - can't remember now - but she is/was one of the most talented, sensitive and wonderful musicians/singers I have ever experienced. We need her here now to soothe us in the turmoil we are in, believe me. Take Care and stay healthy. with warm regards, David
