I haven't seen anyone mention that Drea was in love with Marissa. They are not biologically related and Marissa was the only one who loved and cared for Drea. Evidence: The way Drea kisses Marissa wounds was sensual, not sisterly. Drea was jealous of the bf during the sex scene and saw him as competition. When Marissa leaves to move in with the bf, Drea felt like her one love was leaving her. Because Drea understands how disturbing it would be to confess this longing, she just held it in. THAT'S why when she finally meets Nai'jah it's Marissa's face, because she's in love with Marissa.

Oh the Black femme homoerotic aspects were not lost on me - figure the same as anyone else who has read "Passing" a novel from the 1920's about two very light skin Black women where one actively passes for white while the other struggles with her attraction mixed with jealously/resentment towards her - and the writers appear to have been intentional about layering that into Drea and Marissa's dynamic. As a queer person, I also noticed there was nuance to the performance of the kiss on the wrist as not necessarily sensual... yet it was deeply intimate (and remorseful, possibly hinting at Drea having some level of responsibility) so much so that seemed to mix in her attempting to "repair through love" Marissa's scar, along with possibly the only type of intimate kiss Marissa would permit Drea to give her.

I have a theory that defends the fact that Dre DID NOT kill Marissa So if you go back and try to really imagine the details of Marissa and Dre's childhood, you can see that there is something more off about the dad then is really fully highlighted. The dad kept Dre in the attic.... Remember episodes 1-5 and 7 Is a DRAMATIZATION of what really happened. So I don't think that seen where she was chased through the house by the dad even really happened... Esp since in real life, the dad was dead when the detective found the Jackson's And in the DRAMATIZATION Marissas room was in the attic but in ep 6 ...Marissa room was definitely not in the attic Also, why would he keep a foster kid locked in the attic away from her sister who she would protect at all costs?? I theorize that the dad was possibly sexually abusing Marissa and never liked Dre and knew he couldn't get away with it with Dre around and after Dre attacked that girl at the slumber party he REALLY wanted to give her back cuz he knew he might be endanger?? This is why Marissa probably did have a history of suicide attempt ! Also, when Billie Elish character gets Dre to an extremely honest place.... why would she feel her greatest regret was missing that call??? And that her life would be different with her sister in it if she hadn't missed the call Lastly back to episode 6, the mother was really acting like she had not seen Dre since they gave her back Nd regretful How could she fully feel.that way if she wished Dre was dead cuz she thought she killed Marissa?? I'm telling you, that gun chase scene was just all a little fabrication of the dramatization of the true story (in the swarm universe) So I 100% don't believe Dre killed Marissa... the parallel at the end was to just show that Dre was still in Tony and she would still do anything like lie and mooch off a loved one to see Ni' Jah I mean the Dre killed marrisa camp has some compelling arguments (almost had me) but i side back with her not killing marrisa Plus there is a recent Dom interview where she state she dislikes the Dre killed marrisa theory because she doesn't believe it's true at all... she was given no direction to allude to that and she "lived" in dre and just doesn't think that's true. 🤷🏿♀️
@KSobey Жыл бұрын
I thought the same too! When I saw the cuts on her wrists my mind first went to sexual assault but like you the “Dre killed Merissa” theories had me thinking otherwise. 1) the way Dre knew exactly how to stop the father from getting to her so fast in the attic, by just positioning the doors and creating obstacles like this was something they were accustomed to. 2) his disdain towards Dre felt more like jealousy than him thinking she was a bad influence. He might have thought that Dre was “competition” since he thought the girls had something more than a sisterly bond between them. 3) the family at the end of the show mirrored marissa’s life imo. if you watch closely there was a scene between Tony’s girlfriend and her father (I think they were in the kitchen) and they seemed oddly close.

Ok. So all the Dre killed Marissa theories are great. But, based off the Billie Eillish episode, I don't think she did. Because during the "sessions" Eva had Dre revealing a lot of hidden truths and answering questions honestly. And she expresses deep regrets about missing Marissa's call, because it lead to her death. And I don't think Dre was lying in these moments.. but hey..🤷🏾♂️
@lunacouer Жыл бұрын
I keep switching back and forth, but this is the most compelling argument that she _didn't_ kill Marissa. Eva got her to tell the truth against her own will, and there was so much sincerity about missing Marissa's call, sincerity she didn't need to fake.
@doritosdaman Жыл бұрын
But at the end dre is telling Rashida how much she loved and wanted to share nijah with her. And those tears were also very sincere as she strangled her. Almost like she was hurting doing it.

Exactly!! I think that was put in to solidify that she didn't kill hers
@i_cxndy0714Ай бұрын
I think that it's the grey area that leaves room for season 2 tbh, if there'll ever be one. When she blacked out during her session with Eva, she had "dreams," and Marissa hit her in the face. Marissa was being shown as "Dre"... almost like they switched places. I think that Dre actually talked about biting NiJah, junk food addiction, and killing Marissa before "she fell" and hurt her head. My theory is that Dre couldn't forgive herself, hence the reason she punished herself. It's possible she hit her head on the wall after Eva kept digging more info in the session. Let's not forget that Dre was a pathological liar. She created "truths" in her head. At Jackson's house, when she locked herself in Marissa's room, she also had an episode of hitting herself. She may have loved Marissa, but a killer is a killer🥲💔

What Glover and company achieved here is more then a story of a serial killer. He has presented or afforded us a look into being unapologetic Black. A role or story like this would have been unheard of before in Hollywood. And if it were it would have been written by thru an Anglo lens. Thru a black lens we see the different shades of spectrum: Two well to do black families, single black men doing well by just being successful at there job, a blue color worker cutting a descent path in life. All while being black. From the love scene, to showing dirty south strip clubs, as well as the showcasing the effects of mental health and its like of acknowledgement in the black community and beyond. This is a role of a life time and it was Dominique Fishback and not Denzel Washington that was able to get it.

Another reason I think she killed Marissa is because Dre never wants to ever truly be alone. She sees it as if she takes the life of Marissa, in a way she’ll always be with her or a part of her, and no longer a part of another person’s life (aka Marissa’s bf). Just like how at the end she kills her new gf cause she knows she’s slowly starting to leave Dre and not be so hung up on her anymore. Also reminds me of a lot of Jeffery Dahmer’s motives. He’d kill people so they’d always be with him and never truly get the chance to leave him.

I think that Marissa’s father was sexually assaulting her which led her to cut herself. The show never said it point blank but some things pointed to it, such as Dre knowing exactly how to position the doors so he couldn’t enter Marissa’s room and his seemingly jealous hate towards Dre. Everyone is pointing out the Get Out and Midsommar similarities, but it also gave very strong “the strange thing about the Johnsons” vibes. -A wealthy, suburban black family that looks perfect on the outside but disgusting SA taking place on the inside. Jackson and Johnson (Marissa’s sir name) are similar and this movie was made by the same person that made Midsommar (ari aster.)

@jada846 Жыл бұрын
If you watch the scene where Dre first finds the phone, one of the text messages reads "I threw up again" which leads me to believe that Marissa swallowed a bunch of pills or intentionally ingested some sort of poison. We know the fight with Khalid was real and that Marissa came home. I also don't see how Dre could have forced Marissa to swallow pills/poison. Even when premeditated, Dre's kills are via strangulation or blunt force trauma which the police would have noticed on Marissa's corpse (or mentioned in Episode 6). While the theory does have some weight, I don't think Dre killed Marissa.
@user-hc2tu7ul7j Жыл бұрын
I actually think it’s interesting that Dre has had multiple ways of killing. 1)blue force 2) gun shot 3) locking someone in a freezer 4) strangulation 4)run over by car 5) if you believe she killed Marissa, which I do, poisoning by pill 6) probably more since we know she kept changing cars while she was Tony

@TheLadyBlerd Жыл бұрын
This part REALLY upsets me because... she didn't need to be coded that way. And I'm also seeing a trend of quiet Black femme villians in the psychological thriller vein of film recent being coded as "on the spectrum" versus coding them as simply sociopathic to psychopathic like all the rest..... it insults a whole community to not make any distinctions being traits of a violent psychopath versus traits of an autistic person. They aren't and shouldn't be THAT interchangeable in media because it paints for the general audience that, no different than sociopaths, ASD folks are so more prone to "snapping" than the rest of population who aren't -weird- "on the spectrum". Also, it was unnecessary for nearly every character to deliver the word "weird" as if it were a slur - - conditioning the viewer to associate a normal range of "weird" (read ND consistent) behaviors being called out by the other characters toward a character that also demonstrates for the audience additional behaviors of enjoying unaliving people absence of remorse. If anything, her behavior is consistent with Antisocial Personality Disorder especiallly with narrative suggesting the childhood violent tendencies involving her grandmother and then again at the sleepover. Although it's fair to say it's possible for a character to be autistic AS WELL AS experience a clinical severe level of violent psychopathy... however in an era where folks don't make these distinctions when negatively judging someone, it's irresponsible to blend them AND THEN get 9 levels deep into meta about whether or not Drea is a real person - - folks are just going to jump to this character as somehow representativeof how a real person who is also weird, orphaned, and keeps to themselves easily could be just like her (insert podcasters insisting BW are inherently evil)... when you're more likely randomly finding winning lottery on the ground 3 times consecutive than ever casual running into EVEN one Black femme autistic sociopath IRL let alone multiple to form theories about them. Nevertheless, it seems the writers just added in stereotyped traits of ND girls (that country singing clip hurt to the core) that often result in them getting mercilessly bullied and traumatized with extreme assumptions of "Oh be scared of the weird girl probably who is either gonna stab you or herself" ....so the narrative strengthens those stereotypes which only makes it that more difficult for the rest of 95-99% weird girls who have no desire or history of wanting to harm themselves or others... and it's unfortunate that sometimes that stereotypes become so harmful through social ridicule and negative assumptions that it creates the issue when it could have been avoided by not reinforce beliefs that weird kids are somehow less human because they are different.

Spoilers just in case but would you really be here? Just in case though. I'm still not convinced that Dre killed Marrisa. Honestly, it's pretty dang obvious she didn't thanks to the hospital scene where the doctor/nurse comes and tells her the news. This means someone analyzed the body unlike with Rashida. If there was any signs of foul play, Dre and Khalid would have been suspect 2 and 1 and in no way she'd have as easy of time as she did early on from the cops. From an editing standpoint,If they wanted to keep it ambiguous, they could've easily cut that scene out and went to Dre panic crying in the bed. Donald showed that one on purpose guys. Another thing, the fight with Rashida wasn't that similar with Marrisa. Marrisa wanted Dre to grow up, but never was it a F Naija tell off like Rashida did. Which is why after the argument with Marrisa, Dre watched the Naija video and then she channeled all the bad bitch energy she had and used it to get in the club and pull not Macauley. In her head, that's what she believes is adulting. With Leon blaming Dre for Marrisa death, people are ignoring that he was also a huge homophobe who believed that Dre was trying to be more than friends with his daughter (which was probably true to be fair) but he is placing a lot of blame on Dre just because he hated their friendship. So Ironically, if you ask Dre under a Billy Ellish session if she killed Marrisa, she'd say yes. Dre totally blames herself for not being there when her best friend needed her the most, hence this grand revenge tour and the obsessing of the phone. It's the last connection she had with the one person that loved her for her. She thought she was gaining that love with Rashida but then she had to triple down on shitting on her Marrisa proxy in Naija (Which is why Naija looked like Marrisa since in Dre's head they are the same.)
@saturncrush Жыл бұрын
How was the father “Leon” seen as homophobe?
@theleelife313 Жыл бұрын
@@saturncrush go back and watch episode 6. Specifically when the detective is talking to Marrisa's mom. She mentions that Dre and Marrisa were both sensitive people, which is a reason why they were so close. She says that Harris (aka papa Leon) didn't get that, that girls could be close and not be, in her words, "funny." The mom again says that harris didn't get that, emphasizing he had a problem with them being funny. So they don't come out and say he had an apprehension to lgbt people and to be fair maybe he didn't outside of his own daughter's relationship with her foster sister. That said, he's the one that wanted Andrea to hide in the attic at the sleep over so Marrisa can "have a normal childhood." Even if Andrea had some developmental problems and possibly was bi/pan/lesbian at the time that's messed up on his part. Now I'm not going to assume that Dre would have stabbed that white girl anyway if she knew the full context of the situation but she did it thinking she was protecting her sister from harm. To sum up: Harris was always suspect about Andrea, even before the stabbing incident, stemming from how he disapproved of how close the sisters were since he didn't want his daughter to be "funny" aka gay. Ultimately though, I shouldn't have said he was a homphobe since there is no hard evidence of the case outside of his own house. He was just a lower case conservative black man.

well. I think that Dre did kill Marissa mainly because of the blood at that back of her head (marissa's head), and the random scene where Dre is with Eva (billie eilish's character), and it cuts to a random scene where Marissa hits Dre with a cast iron pan. I mean I'm not sure what that means exactly, but it could symbolize something (maybe Dre hit Marissa, or Marissa hit Dre in defence and Dre killed Marissa, cause what else would that scene mean), ESPECIALLY because of what her and Eva where talking about, and how Eva was manipulating Dre to expose all her secrets. BUT, we also see in the scene where Dre goes to Marissa's old room and stars to punch and hit herself repeatedly, in a very guilty way (cause she killed Marissa, which is also what the parents believed). ANOTHER REASON WHY I THINK SHE KILLED MARISSA is because, who she became after Marissa leaving her (she got dressed up, RANDOMLY NEW HOW TO DO MAKEUP and went to the club). And based on Marissa's personality and friends, she seemed like the type to get dressed and go and go party, meet new people, etc. AND THATS EXACTLY WHAT DRE DID. SHE WENT OUT AND WAS ALL CONFIDENT, AND WAS NOT THE PERSON WE WHERE FIRST INTRODUCED TO, SHE CHANGED HER WHOLE PERSONALITY. And we see her do this a lot when she murders someone, we saw her kill Eva then manipulate Erica (Marissa's friend) JUST LIKE EVA MANIPULATED HER. We even see her suck at pole dancing then suddenly get way better after killing Hailey (Paris Jackson), who mind you WAS MAKING THE MOST MONEY. AND NOT TO MENTION, THE 300000 KISSES SHE WAS LAYING ON MARISSA'S ARM (The cut she had). Like seeing her do that made me think, "Y she kissing her arm like she the one who cut it herself????", Even the fact that Marissa tells her that she does not need to do it every time she sees it. LIKE.. BRO. THE GIRL KILLED HER SISTER, CAUSE THERES NO WAY THAT MARRISA WOULD KILL HERSELF OUT OF THE BLUE LIKE THAT, I FEEL LIKE THERE JUST NEEDED TO BE MORE SIGHNS LEADING TO HER KILLING HERSELF, CASE ALL THE SIGHNS LEADING TO 1 MF, AND THATS DRE. LIKE FRFR. but idk. Cause at first I thought it was Khalid but then Dre's back story changed my mind. lol. Anyway. BYEE. LOVE YOUR VIDEOS.. SORRY FOR THIS WHOLE ESSAY BTW.
