John...always enjoy your videos! I have an original unit and have followed your recipes (Steak with Smashed Potatoes - only way I cook 'em now and I HAVE an Anova sous-vide!) I'm curious about the replacement for the crisper basket; how deep does it sit? I wonder if you could (not necessarily on video but maybe) compare the size of the pots for the new 6.5 vs the old and tell us if maybe we can cook a larger chicken with the new one? Also, I guess they gave up the tall trivet. Can you do the steak/smashed potato recipe in this one as well? The crisper lid might be farther away from the steak and/or the new trivet too far down to put potatoes under it. I'm eager to see you work more with this unit and evaluate the advantages and disadvantages. Thanks for all you do!

Very good point Jay... not needing or using the basket will allow for a larger chicken than before and the steak and smashed potato recipe should work really well in this one... thanks for pointing that out and I might just do that one tonight!!! Thanks again...and thanks for watching!!!

Hi, I'm sorry if I missed this in the comments, or in the video, but where did you get the round glass lid with the sous vide hole? I'm currently using a silicone lid with a cut-out for the circulator, but would love to have one of these instead, and here's why. My circulator has a non-removable clip, so I have to wrestle out the clip pin when I use it in my repurposed-ice-chest-turned-sous-vide container (for large batches). Then when I want to use it in a pot in my kitchen, I have to wrestle to get the clip pin back in. Having a pot lid like yours means no clip needed even when using the smaller pot in the kitchen, which would be great! Thanks for your help and your videos. New subscriber here!

Another great video, John. Perfect timing as I have been checking out the "Pro" version locally and as you mentioned the crisp basket (original 6.5) vs the the crisp plate (pro) is the main difference (plus couple extra functions in the Pro). Do you find cleaning easier with the crisp plate as I have seen other commented about the basket having nooks and crannies that's hard to clean? On the other hand, some also said basket is easier to shake the contents inside for more even seasoning and heating? Does either basket or plate made out of similar material and won't scratch the pot? Thanks
@JohnSanders4 жыл бұрын
I guess birth the plate and the basket have their advantages...I like the plate design but it takes some getting used to... it is Definitely easier to store and I really like the coating... but the silicon feet may be easier to lose if they are removed for cleaning etc... but the fact I can put the rack and the tray inside the unit for storage makes it my favorite design... hope this helps and thanks for watching!!!

The deluxe and the pro pots are the same diameter so they will not fit inside each other... the crisper basket from the 6.5 will fit and that is really good in my opinion just incase someone has a specific thing they do in it... it did really well with the sous vide...i was impressed...thanks for watching!!@

John, my sister in CO raves about her Ninja XL, and a friend has an Anova sous vide, but I have been reticent to jump in, because we just moved to a much smaller living space. I have always been a foodie myself, but as our youngest is a senior in college, I want to make time for my own activities while still setting a succulent table. I have just outplaced many kitchen appliances, from crockpots, pressure cookers, blenders, grills, etc., with the thoughts of replacing them with multifunction items. Ninja appeals to me. I am worried about the size of the XLs, however, in both the grill and the Foodi, as being too large, but like the temperature probe function in the grill. The 6.5 quart foodie seems perfect, if it could function as well as an Anova. So, here’s what I’m thinking: what about the 6.5 11-in one foodie, the hot and cold blender, and a foodi grill? I believe I could then get by with one set of cookware and my heirloom cast-iron things. Question: After your experiences, which size grill do you recommend for someone like me? Is the probe important since they no longer offer it on the smaller version? Is the sous vide good enough on the Ninja to do without the Anova? Love your videos. They have that Hill Country feel! Feels like home!
@JohnSanders4 жыл бұрын
Very glad to hear you enjoy the videos and I think the set up you mentioned is a good one for your situation... I saw a small grill available at Costco with the thermometer but you could also use the wireless type like I use on my latest video on the Ninja XL Oven... or something similar to that... but...I almost always recommend the larger devices just incase you have company or something... hope this helps and thanks for watching!!!
@UnpleasantChuck3 жыл бұрын
Hello, John. This is the first video of yours that I've watched, and I think you've done a good job explaining sous vide and its application in these different devices. However, I think you've done an apples-and-oranges comparison in one aspect. I've read through many of the comments, but haven't seen where someone else pointed this out -- forgive me if I missed it. You seem to be impressed that the Ninja took less time to heat the water than did your Anova circulator. But, by your own explanation, the Ninja was heating 12 cups of water, and the Anova was heating 18 cups! That's hardly an accurate comparison! The other thing that I found puzzling was the initial overshoot of the temperature, which, at one point was as high as 12 degrees high in the Ninja. Sous vide cooking is all about temperature and time! The difference between a steak cooked to 130 degrees and 140+ degrees would have steaks sent back to the kitchen as 'overcooked'. It's true that subsequent checks showed that the Ninja eventually settled down and held the temperature close to 130, but that begs the question: Is having too-high a cooking temperature for part of the cycle a significant problem? That could be a real problem for a food -- like shrimp -- which could overcook in a short time before the temperature stabilized. I recently bought a Ninja Foodi FD302 because of the versatility and because it would give me a second sous vide option when my circulator was already in use. But my first test, which got no further than heating the water way too hot, didn't even see a bag of food hit the water. I set it for 120 degrees, and it heated to 145, as measured with two different digital thermometers. I call SharkNinja to inquire, and they wound up sending me a replacement. It will be interesting to test this new device and see if the temperature stabilizes over time, as it did with yours.

I have never tried the Sous Vide method, I prefer my Beef "Blood Rare", how low of a Temperature does the Foodi Pro go? I often Smoke Beef Roasts (usually Eye of Round or Chuck Roasts) on my Wood Pellet Smoker / Grill Set to "S" (Smoke = around 160F) until an internal Temp of 108F has been reached, then I "Reverse Sear" it on both sides and Edges, Refrigerate overnight and slice it thin for simply amazing Roast Beef Sandwiches. Rare with a Smoke Ring, Yummy 😋 Randy AKA randog311

And thank you Warren for sharing your thoughts...i totally agree and if I didn't have this channel I'm not sure I would have purchased it either due to having the Anova... but...if I didn't already have one this would probably be... on my list...lol... and using it for defrosting is very very useful... thanks for watching Warren!!!

The reason the temp was higher earlier is because it accounts for the temperature dropping after you add the food.

Wish Ninja would sort out the Slow Cooker function on the Foodi - terrible compared to a cheap slower cooker. The Foodi is very very slow to cook in comparison even on the High setting.

What’s the difference between this model here and the Ninja Foodi Deluxe 8 qt (FD402).....?
@JohnSanders4 жыл бұрын
I think the internal design may have some advancements but primarily it is the addition of the sous vide function and this only comes in the 6.5 quart size that i know of at this time... hope this helps and thank you for watching!!!

Very helpful 👍 The most relevant information for me personally, was at the end where you compare all 3 cookers. Ninja it's a mess in Europe and now i know why. Still considering to buy the original 6.5 for 165€. There is no Pro model for now!

Does anyone have this cooker that just displays "PRE" instead of progress bars like the owner's manual shows on pages 13 & 14? I contacted Ninja and left the info with them. My cooker operates fine otherwise.

Thank you. That does help allot to confirm what I'm seeing with the cooker and what's in the manual are in fact different. The is my first Ninja Foodi but not my first pressure cooker (Instant Pots). I cooked beef stew and saw PRE the whole time it was pre-heating and coming to pressure. No big deal, just different. Thank you for all your informative videos and for taking the time to reply.
