Ninja Squirrel Makes Lucky Escape from Deadly Hawk Attack
Recently I noticed that some squirrels occasionally came to a spot under a short tree in my yard and played like a ninja. This morning, I noticed that one squirrel was playing very happily at the spot. So I grabbed my camera and just started recording it. Suddenly, a red-tailed hawk came out of nowhere and attacked the squirrel. Luckily the squirrel escaped after intense wrestling and fighting. The squirrel probably bit the hawk on its thigh so the hawk had to let go of the squirrel. The entire attack and wrestling occurred in less than half a minute, right when I started recording the playing ninja squirrel! What an incredible coincidence! This ninja squirrel was able to make a lucky escape probably due to that the squirrel looks like a strong one and it bit the hawk on its thigh, and that the space under this short tree is very narrow which made it difficult for the hawk to make a deadly first hit.

That squirrel lucked out big time because the hawk had to change course just before he got the squirrel and ended up with the squirrels tail instead of a mid body strike, then when the hawk tried to grab it with the other foot he only managed to grab a foot meanwhile the squirrel was bouncing around like a pan of jiffy pop popcorn it never got a good grip with those talons plus the squirrel may have gotten in a quick bite before making a break for safety. The tree really helped the squirrel in that situation because it hampered the hawks movement.

No you're wrong, the hawk got more than a tail, he got the squirrel fur first but his talons didn't pierce through due to not pouncing exactly on the squirrel. The squirrel gesticulating was enough to dislodge him but the raptor caught a tigh after that which would have been enough to stop any escape except the squirrel was now positioned to bite the hawk's leg which he certainly did, and all raptors release prey rather than risking infection from a wound no matter how small to their legs. The squirrel has escaped however, its fate will depend on if the wound to his thigh will heal without infection, and that depends how healthy it is. The chances are good though.

That one was goofing way too much, but as other have said it was probably trying to rubb off a tick or flea irritating him. i think the hawk had a killing grip on the squirrel tigh, without the bite it was all over. No, hawk finds average squirrel and takes it's chances hoping it's got opportune dinner. Squirrels can be fast, are lithe, agile, and possess quick reflexes; I've seen them dodge bullets. They're also surprisingly fierce and are themselves hunters; they're omnivores. House cats generally try to avoid squirrels for this reason. Rabbits 2-5 times bigger make better prey.

@@damkayaker they're not dirty like rats, they live in the big outdoors and have a natural diet whereas rats live in dirty human dwellings and sewers, not the same creature at all. Rats have a real four legged locomotions whereas squirrels are like kanguru, rabbits and stoat all in one. Just because your genomic cousin is a dirty ape chimp doesn't mean humans are dirty chimp. And so don't amalgamate Squirrels with rats.

Everyone is talking about how agile the squirrel is, but no one is talking about how damn fast the buzzard swooped in! I didn’t even see it at first glance! (Also, a side note): that red tail looked rather small. Here in the eastern U.S they get big enough to take on rabbits without much of an issue.
