@@brionguthrie2061 There are a lot of models where slap-chop just doesn't really work. You need something with texture for both the dry brushing and contrast stages. Anything with flat areas just doesn't work (Knights, Tanks, a lot of Space Marine stuff). Also anything with a ton of tiny details (AdMech, GSC, Dark Eldar etc) is also kind of a nightmare because you can't clean up mistakes very well, and I imagine that if you're doing DnD heroes you will fall into this catagory aswell. It mostly works on normal sized monsters (no titan scale) and anything with fur. I done my entire Tyranid army with it and it looks great with fairly little effort, and I was pumping out my Zombicide zombies at a rate of 9 Zombies every 2h30m. For something like orks it can work very well too, especially more tribal style orks.

As a newb, I stumbled across slapchop at a good time. I hated most of the half dozen minis I painted and I looked at my mini-pile of shame (still small) and wanted to quit. It simply was not clicking for me. Then I saw the infamous slapchop video and thought I should give it a try. I appreciated the results, so haven't quit. Slapchop seems like a nice entry point for folks like me who are are at the early stages of brush skill development and who might get frustrated quickly by a steep learning curve. .Who knows? Maybe sometime I'll graduate to suck kut.
@luketfer2 жыл бұрын
Yeah It seems like this is an 'advanced' version of Slapchop, Slapchop is designed to get miniatures good enough to go on the tabletop and play a game, especially with a horde army, not every model has to be a masterpiece that took you 8 hours because painting a mob of Orks like that is going to send you mad...which I think is something a lot of these youtube miniature painters forget...they've been doing it for years, they have already mastered most of these techniques and not only that but painting is their part of the hobby, they rarely, if ever, sit down and play the actual game.
@maverickman64862 жыл бұрын
Sorry, I've already forgot what slapchop is supposed to be except for a type of wash with some extra technique. But also don't forget about dry brushing in in various ways too. Washes and drybushing are perfect skills to learn when beginning to paint. Also try switching up which skill to use first: Drybush then wash or Wash then Drybush. Who knows, eventually, you too will be able to rename a combination of skills too :)
@GreenBlueWalkthrough Жыл бұрын
By far the best explanation of what slop chop is... Which I to have bad brush skills and am 13 hours into a single 40mm tank because I keep making mistake... But I would not trade my no name 3 stage no high light wash or speed paint methiod for the world... Even if itt means what little paint I put on a model needs to be perfect to look good up close... Although it's fine a table distance.
@ColonelSandersLite Жыл бұрын
@@maverickman6486 Slapchop is pretty much just - do a grisaille (just fancy talk for grey scale) with some combination of zenithal highlighting, overbrushing and drybrushing then glaze in your color. Optionally, pick out details. Done. Just a silly name for an old technique but, tbh, that's cool by me. IMO, The big problem with the technique is that it really screws up saturation and vibrancy. If you want something to be highly saturated or vibrant, you have to glaze repeatedly and you will lose the grisaille's value scale altogether. Either that or you just paint opaquely and preserve the value scale manually. This is not always a problem, but in some situations, it really is. That being said, this video is exactly how you solve that problem. Instead of doing a true grisaille, do your value sketch in color. TBH though, he probably could have picked a more vibrant scheme than he did to really show the strength of the technique. As it is, her skin tone and hair are so desaturated that he probably could have just gone with a grisaille and it would have ended up in the exact same place and it would have saved some effort on the plinth she's standing on.

I noticed that the problem with transparent painting over zenithal highlight with just black/grey/white is dead shadows and potentially washed out highlights. My generic solution is going dark brown over the black primer then using an ivory for zenithal highlighting. Using specific colors for shadows and highlights is definitely the way to go if you just painting single miniature with contrast paint. Alternatively, you can spend the time to paint the model using layers. Which does look better, its true.

I tried something like this with dry brushing using dark purple and blue and lighter blue as the three stages of low and high lights. Then added colors over them in glazes, not using just speed paint or contrast paint, but also using other tones with the mediums too. This got some really nice tones, deep colors and shadows that I was only getting as black and white, so i do appreciate the use of colors as the base tone here, and the overall method seems to be a more sophisticated version of the Slap chop, but Slap chopping is really a quick army method, where as AP Speed paints, contrast paints, Vallejo's new Xpress paints can be used as intended for speed, or as glazes and washes for artists who have the knowledge and experience.

I use Lycee to rescale them to a bigger scale and then i recalculate the supports. But what do you to to adjust the tip sizes of the supports? Arent they way too flimsy for the bigger model? I always double check all the supports and make the most important ones a lot bigger at the tip to avoid fails. But that obviously takes time. Or is there an option to also automatically adjust the tip sizes with recalculationg the supports after scaling? Would appreciate any feedback from you guys. Thanks!

I think this sort of loses the appeal of slapchop. It's to just get your armies painted decently for a tournament fast. It also needs an air brush - the beauty of slapchop is you can do it with cheapo dome drybrushes. Here in Canada a decent (ie, not top end) air brush, compressor + tank, and extraction booth & respirator is like $700 CAD after tax but a dome brush is like $3 and I can use the paints I already have. No one is bringing their airbrush equipment to the hotel a few days before a tournament but you can definitely bring a drybrush and some paint.

Being an inexperienced painter when the whole "slap chop" fad was going on I was like man, I've really got to see what this is about. After watching a couple of videos aside from the dry brushing everything else was exactly what I was already doing when I needed to speed paint a large group of the same minis. Zenithal highlighting with my primer, then covering with homemade contrast paints. Makes for a quick paint job when you have a ton of minis from a board game you're just trying to get on the table without everything being uniform grey.
@cgsrtkzsytriul Жыл бұрын
I've noticed with Contrast Paints if you do a heavy zenithal it looks weird in the shadows because the color in the recesses is too bright and then the raised areas are black. I was thinking about using a contrasting color to the Contrast paint and going a lot brighter on the zenithal with more gradient. Also, thinning the Contrast paint is a good idea.

Jon, I just tired the AK Interactive Dual Exo Dirty Red paint to try out exactly what you advocated in this video as a way to improve on the slap chop approach. On both a GW Cygor and models for the Rotmire Creed war band from the Heart of Ghur Warcry box the AK Interactive paint was a total fail. After applying a 'prime' coat with an airbrush like I have done with hundreds of other models, the Dual Exo paint rubs off from simple handling while painting the model. And that is after curing overnight, being painted over with a matte varnish in hopes it would stick, etc. After jacking around for days with the Cygor I just gave up, and am going to start over with a new models. Then I just stripped all the paint from the Rotmire Creed models with Isopropyl alcohol and I am going to start over with my standard primer and then maybe use the AK Interactive for later Zenithal over the primer. But for your viewers, be careful, try Dual Exo on just one test model, and if the Dual Exo paint doesn't adhere, move along to another paint for a colored prime/zenithal combo.

Just recently (one month or so) I just come to terms with me and try to... just paint and enjoy again. I have little time (father of one toddler, and another one coming...), so I will use speed paint methods. But I will try to enjoy the process. I will definetely try this SUCK CUT method. For two reasons: you gain me with the stupid name, and the promise that I will be a better painted. Thanks, Jon, for your videos.

White Werewolf and Dragon Trappers Lodge are my two favorite sculptors and they cover all minis from busts, to realistic design to more smoothed out but inventive monsters.
