In this episode, Did You Know Gaming takes a look at some facts, secrets, Easter eggs and history of the Nintendo DS. The NDS was the follow up to the popular Game Boy Advance (GBA), and featured all of Nintendo's hit franchises at the time, including Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Pokemon, and even Metroid. The system started it life as 'Iris', but had several iterations. The Nintendo DS Lite and Nintendo DSi were made later in the handheld's life, and was emulated on the Nintendo 3DS, and there was even a Nintendo DS emualtor on the Wii U. Through our analysis of the console's development, Nintendo DS games and their gameplay and beta builds, we hope to show some of the more interesting facts from the making of the Nintendo DS and have its history explained.

The DS surviving an ascent up Everest shouldn't surprise anyone. A Game Boy survived being blown up during Desert Storm and still worked.

Only problem-- that Game Boy recently stopped working as of last year. I went to Nintendo NY (where the Game Boy is now being displayed) about 2-3 times last year and in each of those times, Tetris was frozen. I've talked to the staff about it and even they don't know what to do about it. Not sure if it started working again, though.

I want to date my sister, but nice username. I remember breaking my DS the day after I got because I liked it so much. Water got on it because I was playing while brushing my teeth. The top screen got damaged so I could still play the game I had. Who know dual screens were so useful? .😂😂😂

My ds survived falling down the stairs, the floor, in orange juice, sugar, etc. The only thing that happened was the screen hinge became loose which meant the top screen cannot be supported upwards by itself. Hell, it even got dead pixels and repaired itself within about a month. It's pretty rare for dead pixels to start to get back into position but I got lucky

I've never seen someone telling this easter egg: In the DSi Song editor, there are some sound effects when pressing the L or R buttons, if you press those 100 times, you'll be able to hear an 8-bit 1UP Sound. Interesting that I've never encountered someone who tells this

Nintendo systems are pretty rugged. I lost my DSi in the snow one time and it still works to this day. That was probably like 2011 or 2012. Also my big brother had dropped his GameCube a few times and it still worked. All in all, Nintendo products are very good and are made to last.

IKMNification The problem is Nintendo tend to refuse to lower the price even when the game is already 2 years in the market. Also the market area they complained about have lower spending amount of money and the nds games can be quite pricey there especially the one with high taxes (Brazil slapped very high price on games because they are considered the same as gambling and taxed accordingly). Nintendo insistence in limiting cartridge production to manipulate sales results also the reason why.

i'm not gonna lie and say piracy isn't an issue but to be fair...i bought pokemon platinum. twice. and i also pirated it at least once. I don't really feel bad about it. shit, CFW being available for 3ds led me to buying more than one extra system to play around with. Most likely hardware similar to the DS. I think the idea of making the DS a distinct product from the GBA was an insurance policy. If the DS had been a complete failure, Nintendo would have simply continued with the Game Boy brand. Also, Nintendo continued supporting the GBA for several years after the DS was released. Had they been confident enough in the DS from the beginning, software support for the GBA would have ended earlier.

DylanDude Again, it was the idea that they didn’t know. They weren’t sure if the DS would replace the GBA. If it did, then the backwards compatibility was there. If not, then they could bury the DS and continue on with the GBA until they came up with something else. One thing is certain, Nintendo made a deliberate attempt to differentiate the Game Boy line and the Nintendo DS. Part of this was because Nintendo wanting market the system beyond the traditional gaming crowd. The other reason is because they did not want consumers to see it as the new Game Boy. Keep in mind that the GBA was not very old when the DS came out.

I adored my Nintendo DS. I played the console so much! I finished Super Mario 64 DS on a train journey at 15 and felt so much success and excitement. I beat Partners in Time, loved Animal Crossing Wild World as well as Gen 4, Gen 2 remakes and Gen 5 Pokemon games. Tho I did love playing Yoshi Touch & Go. The DS will always have a special place in my heart.

Ahh, the DS. Such good memories with this system, it had so many amazing games. I remember using some of the online functionalities some of the games had on a bus back in 2009 by sharing my 3G connection from my phone to it. It was mind blowing at the time, now it's just a no-brainer with Switch + 4G, haha. And soon we'll be having the 5G too. It's going to be amazing playing Switch on the go and enjoying all the online games at minimum latency (that if 5G works even half as well as promised).

I use to play Mario kart ds all the time on my dsi in school and at recess me and all of my friends would link up and play local multiplayer in 4th grade. Those were amazing times and I remember them fondly.😄

Fun fact; I predicted the existence of the DS when I was 6 years old (five years before it was released). I literally had a dream about a "two-screened touch-screen Gameboy" and told ALL my friends about the dream I had back then. Needless to say, I flipped out when the DS was announced.

So far Nintendo's best handheld. 3ds doesn't even compare. Switch may dethrone it though, still way too early but I see it having the potential to do so.

I agree. 3DS was such a disappointment when it comes to game library. Switch has huge potential though, it has had far more good games compared to what 3DS had in the beginning. Although it's still lacking, but as you said, it's too early to say.

yeah i'm curious as to what Nintendo will do about the handheld market. the 3ds and now 2ds have been a huge source of revenue for Nintendo and the switch crossing over makes it difficult to introduce another handheld. From what I can see Nintedo is looking to replace the 3ds and 2ds with mobile games, and have the console players and a portion of the handheld market move to the switch. Which is smart but i'll miss the good ol gba and ds handheld era.

bmbmunoz2 I think you are right. It would make no sense for Nintendo to bring another new handheld to the market, they would basically be competing with themself at that point. But if you think about it, Switch is like GBA on steroids. I just wish they keep bringing more handheld style games to the system along with the "home console" titles. A smaller handheld Zelda would be amazing on the Switch, with a smaller price tag of course.

An interesting thing to note is that the new racetracks in Mario Kart DS were called Nitro Tracks, while the ones from previous installments were (unsurprisingly) named Retro Tracks. So that's one reference to the Nitro codename that's still in a game.

i remember my father getting me and my 3 older siblings ds.I gotten a pink one Sadly,Since i was like 8 or 9 (or 7 lol),I dropped it a lot and it broke :( My oldest sibling lost his blue one at school,My second oldest sibling ds,that i dont know what happen to The 2 remaining ds are my father's ds (i stole it back then but then he let me keep it) and my 3rd oldest sibling still has it somewhere in her room My first ds game was nintendogs dalmatian and friends and i still have it

I remember a few years ago I brought a original DS to my cousins house and he had lots and lots of DS's for some reason. me, my sister, both my cousins, and my aunt all played mariokart for a while I think I lost most of the rounds but it was very fun. edit: my DS survived its screen being torn off from wear and tear, definitely very cool.
