@@diosoth Yeah, but unlike many other publishers/developers it can be said they are still actively supporting a lot of their older NES titles still because they keep bringing them back and are making them available on their online service. A few Nintendo titles are arguable preserved only through ROM sites, such as was the case for Super Mario RPG for a long time, but Nintendo somehow managed to bring that one back too. Because of this it's kinda understandable that Nintendo is the most spartan company about this, but they do generally ignore ROM sites that have a policy of not making Nintendo games available.

I think it's probably for the best they stop new Mig cartridges from entering the market. This isn't the days of R4 where you could play any pirated games without getting potentially banned. If you buy a Nintendo Switch game off of Ebay, you run the risk of potentially getting banned if you play the games at the same time. Yes, you don't run this risk if you just dump your local games and use the mig cartridge to save physical space when on the go. But let's be honest here, people were buying it to dump their games to sell on eBay, or pirate games online to play locally. I'm sure we'll eventually see a true R4 switch successor after a bypass to the legitimate cartridge check is found.

@@Dondozoisbeast1 Honestly it's legally a gray area, but the law isn't going to bust down your door over it. So it only really matters to Nintendo. They have the complete legal right, and if that emulator is up when a remake for the same game is announced, then it could be a threat to business. I saw people saying they wouldn't buy TTYD remake because they were just going to emulate the original. I'm not defending Nintendo, I'm just saying that this may be their view point on it and it isn't totally unjustified. Personally, I think emulators are overall good things even though I don't really like using them. I prefer owning my games and playing them on the intended hardware, but that's just a personal taste. So yeah, Nintendo is really prideful and pretty infuriating but legally in the right.

Especially since you could say the same thing about remakes if you already own the original game and system. It’s just making that option more accessible to the people who don’t have that luxury. I mean look at crash bandicoot 1 - 3 remake. Not that many people bought it because they have the OG on PS1 or they’re kids

With over a decade of stolen assets on the Steam Workshop, they have a right to take them down. 2: Piracy, distributing a game for free is kind of straight-forward. 3: Selling modded hardware, Selling modded hardware to anable piracy is very obviously illegal, especially stupid on newer consoles like the Switch. 4: Tournaments: Nintendo of America provides an official Tournament License MANDITORY for big events that have prize pulls. Individuals hosting not-for-profit, small-scale community tournaments do not need to apply for a license.

Piracy was down because it was so easy to gain access to so many movies and shows through a cheaper alternative like a subscription. The modded systems I get. Hacking the switch is easy and that does violate their copyright. However I disagree with the migdumper and the mig switch. Those can be used to preserve and dump switch games for when the switch inevitably gets discontinued. I have been dumping games just in order to play them and preserve them on other hardware. What worries me is how the WIIU has a critical flaw that bricks systems so the preservation of those games is super important. I feel like Nintendo doesn’t care about what happens when their eshops get shut down as long as nobody pirates

Truthfully, if that were the only demand of people who think pirating games is acceptable then the new argument would be that why are they selling old games? How dare they charge $10 for ocarina of Time or something like that and then would still pirate because the prices in their eyes is still not worth it unless it's free. Also, many of these lawsuits are not necessarily for older games but modern games that are actively being sold on switch. There's no excuse for that. I personally would love to plop down 5 or so bucks to own a copy of the SNES version of SimCity on modern hardware but don't care nearly enough or entitled enough to try piracy.

As someone who modded a DSi, I think it’s one thing to mod consoles and emulate games that you own or are no longer available commercially, but it’s another to mod or get ROMs for free online when the product is still actively being sold. Or when selling mods and illegal ROMs to people. To me, modding or emulation isn’t a bad thing in of itself, but when the service is still being provided by the official company, that’s where I draw the line.

I know the switch is old and all, but it's still a console in the market, modding a retro console is all fair since you can't get it anymore, can't believe people don't get it. I love Nintendo, there's no denying that, but when the 3DS eshop closed I modded my 2DS, wouldn't have need to if Nintendo gave you a way to play those games, but for this case? No excuse, Nintendo may have outdated views, but this is totally in their right.

Even though I'm not a modding or a pirate person (because I'm becoming a indie game developer), I'm not surprised that Nintendo is taking down modders and pirating sites.🤦‍♂️ Best way to prevent that sticky situation is not to sell pirated or modded Nintendo systems. Another best way to prevent Nintendo from treating game preservation like garbage is to stop buying remakes/remasters of retro triple AAA games (including the Nintendo ones) and instead, start buying indie games and AA games.

To anyone who thinks that they can go with the “game preservation” argument you are wrong. If a company says they don’t want you to mod or pirate any of their games and consoles then you shouldn’t be doing it. If you choose to actively ignore it then you are breaking the law and that company is well within their right to get you to stop even if it is suing you, Especially with a company as large as Nintendo.

The preservation argument dose work when it comes to older games. The problem with this situation though is that the piracy thats occurring is with games that are still available for purchase.
