I feel like hardcore communities like ours overestimate how big the Steam Deck actually is, especially considering that it isn’t even sold at retail. The handheld PCs are a non-factor to Nintendo.

Steam Deck sold less than half the amount of units Wii U did, which means that even if Switch 2 bombs, it would still outsell the Steam Deck.

Agreed. It’s a successful niche device but it’s still a niche device for enthusiasts. No one ever seems to think about that gigantic amount of mainstream average people going to the store to get a thing. The only audience PC handhelds is going for is mostly people who are also the kind of person that would get a gaming PC or laptop. You would have to make that entire PC game market easier to get into for it to even match the Switch and we’re in an era where the PC gaming market is as accessible as ever with multiple storefronts and Steam itself existing. But the long and short of it is that the average person doesn’t want to mess about with their computer, they want something that just works when you turn it on and put the game in. Heck, I built my own PC and like messing with computers but I chose the Steam Deck over other PC handhelds because much like the Switch, it just works like a simple console experience. I don’t need power that’s hampered by a windows OS, I just need something I can play the half of my Steam library I prefer to play on the go or in bed. Simpler is always going to sell better and right now the PC handheld market hasn’t reached Switch level simple.

Nintendo music works on my Carplay, it doenst have a native app but it shows the name of the song and the cover image on the screen

Sure, we ignore the 60 slides presentation of the financial briefing, where they detail all structural changes Nintendo made and highlighted the backwards compatibility. Sorry, but "random" is the last thing Nintendo is acting regarding Switch 2. All information they gave us was clear and direct and always came together with the financial results.

@@upsidedownjim I wasn’t the first to think of this (I’m sure someone here on GVG even mentioned it) but what came to mind immediately after seeing the confirmation of backwards compatibility was the fact that the holiday season was around the corner. I’m guessing Nintendo didn’t want people holding off on spending thinking the next generation would make their purchases obsolete by next year’s end. But I won’t pretend to be an expert on industry strategy like that. Maybe they saw it as the smallest possible official announcement to shift discussion away from some of the leaks without really hurting current sales

Just watch Kit and Krysta’s analysis on how Nintendo plan their hardware launches. Key msg is Nintendo is always mindful of the world’s situation (e.g. politics, wars, economic situation, social issues) when planning the best time to release their hardware. Minimizing distraction is key. Also, confirming Switch 2’s backward compatibility is to preserve holiday sales figures that whatever Switch games they are buying now can still be played on the new hardware.

​@@goteckwah I'd defer to Kit & Krysta given they worked at Nintendo but iirc they were ruling out a Switch 2 reveal towards the end of October because of the presidential election but that didnt stop Nintendo in 2016 when they revealed Switch 1 around the same time when Clinton/Trump election was in full swing. I'm sure there are other factors but the election didn't stop them before so I found it odd they cited the election as a reason now. There's always going to be news happening that is more important than a video game system reveal. If they try to plan around that then it'll never get revealed (...hmmm). I agree about BC being confirmed to help with holiday sales but it is a bit weird to announce features without having shown the system as I think was the point brought up in the video. If you have a Mac and an iPhone, you can listen to Nintendo Music on your computer. The Mac can mirror your iPhone, so you can listen to Nintendo Music from your Mac speakers and control the songs from the Mac too.

That's cool, but surely most PC gamers have sorted out a way to bluetooth music to their speaker system. Mobile app makes the most sense for most people.

@@evermillcreek That’s true, but I was responding to the complaint in the video that there is no desktop app. Though personally I just use my Echo Dot as a Bluetooth speaker and stream music to it from my phone when at home.

@@EPS5000 yeah that's what I meant, even for those who use their PC for music, surely you can just Bluetooth to it from your phone. Everyone uses phones so it's not a big ask. I would have thought that with PC gamers generally being serious about tech, that would include sound accessibility options too

@@evermillcreek that doesn't help for people using headphones unless your headphones can simultaneously play audio from a bluetooth device and a device the 2.4gHz dongle is connected to. There's no harm in having a desktop app or website alongside the mobile app like what every other music streaming service has.

So here’s a thought: I’m sure it’s got to be a small number overall, but there’s GOT to be at least a handful of people who bought a Switch back in 2017 because of the teaser for Metroid Prime 4 that will be enticed to buy a switch 2 because Prime 4 will be a better experience on that.

And even if we got a Switch 2 version, it would still be the same game just at a higher resolution with slightly more dense vegetation and the average joe wouldn't notice the difference anyway.

In terms of Nintendo Music requiring an NSO subscription, I think the exclusivity is the point. Nintendo is very controlling and if they provide any type of service, they want you to have to be in their ecosystem to experience it.

I fully expect Switch 2 to use a modified OS of the current Switch. Any game that currently has variable resolution and has an unlocked frame rate will see instant performance and resolution gains without requiring a patch (it makes the most sense even for Nintendo, so less work needed instantly). If its locked FPS, no change. Then obviously, the bigger patches that add higher res, new textures, frame rates etc.

The reason they’re on sale is because their sell through numbers have dropped significantly (all three manufacturers have, and ironically the lowest drop in percentage/quantity was Xbox despite all the FUD) and everyone needs to boost their quarterly results going into the holiday quarter. The reason we haven’t seen many sales on any of the big three is because the cost of chips have not scaled linearly to the drop in size; aka chips aren’t getting cheaper any more just because you can make more on a single wafer. You know I think that we will see the Switch 2 late January to early February. I think part of the reason we haven’t seen Legends ZA yet is because it will be on Switch 2. Now they have to wait for that before they reveal ZA proper. If they reveal the successor late January to Early February, Pokemon Legends ZA will be primed to get a proper reveal on Pokemon Day, one year after it was first announced.

@rekcroom Pokemon getting new games on last-gen consoles is nothing new. Black 2/White 2 released on DS over a year after the 3DS launched while Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon launched 8 months after Switch launched.

@19:50, Steve I totally get your point. I feel like at this rate I'm waiting, keyword being waiting, for something bigger to come along. I also think Nintendo (to your credit here) has taken note and knows that the hardware is often far behind. I would not be surprised if within the next console (be it some sort of Switch 2/w.e it will be), and the following Gen that Nintendo starts to take reigns again in more than keeping up with hardware specs. Nintendo knows how to take notes -- now if they can readjust again to not be processors, RAM, graphics behind and such. It's funny, growing up I was the biggest graphics guy. Now, I just want to see the best done properly.

Highly doubt old Switch games would run any better on the Switch 2. Most likely it'll work like it has before, the system is put into a sort of "Switch 1" mode when you play the games. What I think they'll do instead is announce a line of Nintendo Selects titles together with the Switch 2. Those Selects titles would be original Switch titles for like half the price and they'll market is a sort of "head-start" for newcomers to Nintendo and as a budget option for people chiosing to stick with the Switch 1.

The steam deck and those other handheld pcs aren't really in the competition with nintendo at all. The switch sold 146 million so far and the steam deck has sold around 4 million. When a parent goes out to buy a console they aren't looking for a steamdeck they are looking for nintendo, sony or xbox. The handheld pcs have a niche but they will never really be bigger than that unless they have exclusive games and were a lot cheaper

I think the more likely outcome is they retire the Switch OLED when Switch 2 comes out, keep the Switch Lite and have either the V2 stick around or a new budget revision for Switch 1. PS4 Pro and Xbox One X didn't stick around once the next gen rolled around for those platforms.

I think it makes no sense to keep the switch 1 in stores after the switch 2 launched. you don't want to have legacy users and everyone who is buying a switch 1 after 2 came out its a user they cannot sell switch 2 games in the future. appel also sells only the latest ipad and they do not need to care that much about compatibility.

I'd be surprised if Nintendo made upgrades for Switch 1 games on Switch 2, even to a limited extent. Something about it seems very "un-Nintendo" to me, though if they did do it, it'd probably be done in some super strange way because Nintendo gotta be Nintendo.

I doubt that. Backwards compatibility would most likely done the old way by running Switch 1 games in a "Switch 1 mode" similar to 3DS's DS mode, which means that games would have the same frame rate and resolution. So if you want Switch 1 games to run in higher frame rates or resolutions, you'll have to wait until they get remade or remastered on future consoles, but you'll have to re-buy the games and start over.

Yeah I’m not a fan of that Nintendo Music app just based on the fact they don’t credit the composers. But the fact that it has limited features and functions just makes it more unappealing. I’d rather just have my video game music with the rest of my music library. I think the Switch’s release timing should’ve been seen as the fluke it was because it was done relatively quickly off the back of a dying Wii U. Nintendo’s not in a position where they feel like they have to rush their next big thing, so I don’t see why a Spring release would happen. It best, it’ll be announced in Spring and we’ll get it later.

Nintendo Music is such a dumb idea. Its like Nintendo having their own voice chat app. Its just inconvenient and bereft of features. I have a huge video game playlist on spotify and about one third of it is Nintendo through local files. Id be glad to replace them all if nintendo actually did anything like a normal company in the 21st century.
