One alt special set+one alt FS each fighter sounds fine to me. Adds variety while being WAY less of a pain to bugfix and playbalance. And for characters with lots of similar moves, have different sets be merely cosmetic and tied to specific fighter alts. So, say, the odd Mega Man models could get the Leaf Shield and Skull Barrier while the even ones could get the Star Crash (EDIT: changed from Jewel Satellite because the sequel progression makes more sense and my dumb ass never thought to launch the Star Crash when I was younger so I'd forgotten that was a thing) and Plant Barrier.

Other examples that stood out to me personally were Mario's Scalding F.L.U.D.D. *finally* giving me a reason to use the move and appreciate the reference, and the option to make Charizard's Side-B not damage itself (albeit at the cost of some of its raw power), as I'm personally not a fan of such moves in fighting games. Plus, in the game's Trophy Rush mode, it was useful to have more means of doing immediate damage. What was NOT fun is just how much of a pain they were to collect. I would've rather had to unlock more characters, and have them come with all of their custom moves right away, or at least eliminate repeats.

I love smash ultimate but the loss of so many previous extras and rewards really brought down my experience, smash is a celebration of gaming and the previous games really showed that with full fledge 3D trophy's of tons of characters from lots of series, masterpieces to let you see where the characters came from and how their movesets connect to their history, and tons of extra modes to goof around in, ultimate instead of detailed trophy's you can rotate and see all the details of there are pngs you can just look at, no masterpieces, barely any extra modes, it feels less like a celebration of gaming and more like just a fighting game, and I'm not saying that's a bad thing I'm just saying smash was a fighting game AND a party game that could be enjoyed by both casuals and completive players (maybe except brawl)

Actually getting those custom moves was a bit of a hassle, which made it feel not right to play as. Which is another point for your argument. It seems they realized how difficult of an idea this was and though they finished it, they didn't want to make it front and center, so they made using these new toys a bit of a drain to even unlock. I can easily imagine a "character level-up" system, if they still wanted it progression based, where each level would unlock a new custom move, similar to the Amiibo system instead of... completely random.

Remember the other babies like Baby Warriors in Yoshi’s island? No? That’s cause it was only in one game!

They should add less custom moves like having 2 choices for each special to help balance as well as updating characters moves based of their newer appearances

YES I FUCKING MISS CUSTOM MOVES SO MUCH! Also there's been some discourse about them lately, I hope they come back in the next game! They're so fun! Also I know about the competitive stuff but idc, I want them back and I want them back competitively!

Maybe the crazy and cool way you can apply spirits outside of world of light to your fighters (modifying move properties and player stats) is the semi-replacement for custom moves? I've certainly seen some insane spirit builds do some crazy things, and it seems like its treated the same way in terms of the competitive scene.

Custom Moves were broken asf, so it's not that bad that they're gone. If they bring them back in the future, they should do it like in Mortal Kombat, introducing some character moveset variations to choose from.
@Aldenfenris2 жыл бұрын
And why is it a problem if they are broken? they are optional, you can disable them if you rather not use them and still play normally. It is like someone going 'oh no, remove items from the game, some are broken!'. But they don't, since they are just optional and you can toggle them out. Just because they might cause trouble for tournaments or for some people, doesn't mean they can't be enjoyed just for people wanting to have a fun time playing solo or against the cpu.

Another key difference between the custom moves and the Pokemon company not including all of the Pokemon, is that all of the work had already been done that would allow them to just copy paste every Pokemon into the new games with the only tweaks needed being slowing down the animations and cries for dynamaxed Pokemon. And then they didn't do it anyways, citing a need to do work they had already completed

I think another reason people didn't pay much attention to them was how painfully annoying they were to unlock, I played smash wii u for a long time and don't have all the custom moves

honestly, they wouldve worked perfect for spirit battles, even if they were exclusive to said battles, to give them a real piece of personality

I completely forgot about custom moves 😅 It was very interesting to learn more about the reasons they were not brought back. Does someone knows what song plays in the last part of the video, starting around 17:00? Is it a song from Ultimate?

Especially since we now have Pokémon Trainer. What would the Down Special variants be? Additionally having Squirtle and Ivysaur as well as Charizard would add to the difficulty in programming. 80+ characters * 4 specials each * 3, that would be over 960 moves. I think we should be content with the Miis having customizations, rather than asking for more.

Another reason I think they scrapped them was because they couldn't be used online, thus people weren't using them and reducing its popularity.

I'm sure the FINAL actual update for SSBU will have a major impact. If we ever do get a massive final update like SMM2, then THAT would be when we get custom moves for all characters

There is ONE thing you forgot to mention. *UNLOCKING CUSTOM MOVES WAS THE BIGGEST PAIN IN THE ASS!* Seriously, you had no way to unlock moves for a specific character, and actually popping a move unlock was painfully uncommon. The only one I wanted was Ganondorf's sword, but after many many hours of playing smash 4, I never got it. *But boy oh boy did I get every single custom move for Pit and jigglypuff.*

You are COMPLETELY WRONG on saying that it takes more effort and time to add custom moves than it does for stages or even costumes! Ask any game developer, or even a modder (of which I am both), and they will tell you that custom moves are the easiest thing to add. You're reusing assets and code that's already in the game for almost all of it. Megaman stands out as an exception as having some work put in specifically for the art of his new moves, but he is a clear outlier. Sorry to come in so negatively for that bit. It just really stood out as erronous. Most fighting games already have 3 versions of every special, only they tend to all be usable at the same time. Smash is only having to adjust because it's button layout makes it impossible to add in all those variations in a way that's workable to the average player. This is not "more work" by fighting game standards. This is already normal in the genre (fighting games is the genre I make games for). So you might be thinking. "If that's the case, then wouldn't that make an echo fighter more work to make than adding new moves to a pre-existing character?" and yes. Yes that is more work. And the only explanation I can find is that the artists had more time than the programmers. Because echo fighters are a lot more effort to make. This just proves that the teams sometimes are working without support from the other teams. Echo fighters would be made without help from the programmers. You argue that people were relieved to see the moves go with Mewtwo so they can enjoy tournaments again. But they were ALREADY illegal in more than half of Smash tournaments. You couldn't even use custom moves in online play for crying out loud! Custom moves were not a common allowance. And they weren't ever forced to be in tournaments, it was always a choice. Having the choice removed did not make fans happier. It made salty tournie players happy. Because the rest of us losing out sounds like a positive to them, and that's crappy. But I understand why the moves were cut. It was about time, it was about money, and it was about the negative feedback after they forgot to balance the moves. It's just so depressing they were put into a game that was rushed. If they were in ultimate, they would have had the time to be better. DLC characters would have the new moves too. It would have been great! Instead they were put into the least popular version of Smash, and not done that well. But I personally spent quite a while looking up and asking for help on why I couldn't access Mewtwo's custom moves. Also the fact the moves had to be unlocked by PURE CHANCE was SO BAD. The gacha level of randomness made it all so much worse. But this is still a feature worth bringing back after getting fixed. Or at least, give those old custom moves to the echo fighters! The story mode of Ultimate would have been incredible with this feature. You're right on the mark there! So on your video, it feels like you didn't get things quite right and didn't even give a very solid answer for why they didn't bring them back now that they have time. Just that it's easier and that it went badly the first time. Coulda said that very quickly. Not to say that the video was a waste of time, I did learn some new things. I'd never even seen a single tournament use the custom moves so hearing how bad it was, that was interesting. I'm not much of a tournament fan. So I only remember this gimmick fondly. I miss it.

They should cut down on the goofy modes. Cut down the roster size of the next smash, then add unique and meaningful custom moves and finishers and stuff like that. Personally I'd prefer it to be a 1 on 1 games, akin to a traditional fighter say MK, Soul Calibur, or Street FIghter, but still retain that smash bros uniqueness with its stages, and ease of play without having to master crazy button inputs. Have a solid roster of the main franchises, Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Kirby, Kid Icarus. Do DLC set packs like a Hyrule DLC which adds like 3 character or something and some stages. Just focus the next game more, and put more love into each character and a large variety of movesets. Fighters have been doing this for years, and especially stuff like MK11 has done it to some degree of success. Dunno just my thoughts. The next smash really needs to pull back, be more.... intimate i guess. We've already got the ultimate traditional game, now its time to try something very new and still retain the spirit.
