One of the major factors why FS meter in the competitive scene never took off is that some final smashes are still really, REALLY broken. Zelda and Peach/Daisy come to mind as kill-at-zero final smashes, with Zelda's having an insane hitbox and Peach/Daisy giving absurd amounts of healing. The FS meter also heavily encourages camping, which is already a problem in online Ultimate for obvious reasons

There was even an early Ultimate tournament that featured the FS Meter, and it was really just a fight of who gets to trigger their op FS first, and yeah, Zelda and Daisy were reigning supreme, especially Zelda, if the opponent has enough percent, that thing is a literal win button, no need to aim or time anything, just tap B and watch the Triforce eat a stock

The Final Smashes in Ultimate can roughly be categorized into five main types: 1. Huge horizontal/vertical projectiles (Mario, Samus, Wii Fit Trainer etc.) 2. Traps that require the character to get very close to the opponent (Captain Falcon, Ike, Greninja etc.) 3. The character dashes forward and traps any opponent they bump into (Yoshi, Wario, Ridley etc.) 4. An aiming reticle appears on screen, allowing the player to guide their attack to the opponents (Bowser, Zero Suit Samus, R.O.B. etc.) 5. The character moves around the screen super fast, damaging opponents in the process (Pikachu, Diddy Kong, Sonic etc.)

You can also group them in 3 types: 1. Attacking hitbox that requires you to get close to the opponent to get it to trigger (Captain Falcon, Meta Knight, Falcon) 2. Attack that you must place yourself in a good spot to have it be effective (Mario, Marth, Jighlypuff, Samus) 3. Activate anywhere, always the same result (Zero Suit Samus, Bowser, Pikachu, Sonic)

But NOOO, instead Siiroth has to make sarcastic commentary every minute and decides to randomly spend 5:21-5:39 just talk about the Wii U because he realized that Ganondorf's segment of the video wasen't long enough, so he put filler.

There are a lot of errors in this video, especially claiming Giga Bowser is what Sakurai wants Bowser to be like. It's just his interpretation of his sprite from the original Super Mario Bros. Anyways, most of the new Final Smashes better reference things from their source material such as the Star Fox characters and King Dedede. It's not like the Final Smashes can never be changed back in future entries, as Lucario went back to its Brawl Final Smash in Ultimate.

Yeah, Bowser’s FS is more true to the games by making Giga Bowser even bigger, and doing a huge punch, similar to his SMG2 final fight, and a Giant Bowser attacking from the background is a rather common boss fight overall And Mega Lucario shooting an aura beam really works well as a Pokkén reference, it resembles his burst attack in that game, and them keeping Mega Lucario is good because it has some major importance in XY, especially regarding Mega Evolution, and it’s a boss you gotta face (using another Mega Lucario) in order to get the Mega Ring and being able to Mega Evolve Pokemon!

I can imagine 3 ways In which Robin's Final Smash could've been changed due to Chrom being a whole new character now. 1 - Keep the same, just change the partner they team up with. The best fit for it would be Morgan, Robin's child unit from that game. 2 - Having Robin go ham on magic blasts In the battlefield, In a vein similar to his Fire Emblem Warriors incarnation. 3 - Give a command to Lissa, that binds the opponents under the Freeze Staff effect, Robin then briefly taps into Grima's power and launch a blast.

Sakurai also said that if he retired there would still be more smash games, just that he wouldn't be apart of the development at all. So basically there would be a new director taking his place. It seems like final smashes were charged to better fit the ideals of the game or the character, kinda like the changes to regular moves. The Zelda characters, except Young and Toon, all had final Smashes very specific to that incarnation of the character. These changes were needed, same with Pokemon Trainer, Pit, Fox, Falco, Wolf, Kirby or even Yoshi. Pit's new Final Smash references his newer game, making it more reasonable to include. I never knew why Yoshi had wings or spat fire originally and that reference, as fun as it was, is outdated. Now it is common knowledge that there is a Yoshi species and all of them coming together is quite fun. Kirby got a more modern reference and Lanmaster makes less sense than the ships. I think this will continue moves, characters, or final smashes will be phased out, making room for new moves. We've seen it with Zero Samus, Zelda, Sheik, Pit, and more where a move is changed to reference something new, or in some cases cannon

For Pit, the 3 sacred treasures is way more associated with him than the lightning chariot even if we just consider Uprising and not the first 2 games. The chariot is honestly a more fitting final smash for dark pit as he uses it more times in Uprising (pit only used it at the start of 1 chapter and partially in the boss fight of a previous chapter) whereas Dark Pit used it in multiple crucial moments in the story (keep in mind that you can only play as dark pit in 1 chapter of the singleplayer campaign) whereas the 3 sacred treasures are used by Pit for the entirety of the chapter where you fight Medusa (which is one of the longest chapters in the game and also one of the most iconic) and briefly used it in a later chapter before the treasures got destroyed. Basically Pit's smash 4 final smash would've worked fine for him in Ultimate and the lightning chariot should've been given to Dark Pit as a final Smash and his dark pit staff should've been incorporated into his his regular moveset (at the very least having him use the staff for his neutral special instead of the silver bow but the appropriate level of power that the silver bow currently has, again this is what they should've done for DP at the very least).

I don't know much about the Kid Icarus series but from what you said smash 4 had a better final smash for Pit makes sense. Maybe they had an issue with how controllable the final was. Dark Pit should have different moves than Pit, but so should many echo fights so I doubt they'll change that sadly

There are people that were upset that only 2/3 of the "single straight line hitbox" final smashes were ditched in Ult and not all 3 of them (referring to Aaronitmar if you couldn't tell, though I do agree with him).

Actually you can access Zero Suit Samus from the character select screen in Brawl by holding down certain buttons before pressing start. If I remember correctly it was Z for controllers and minus for the Wii remote. It should show Zero Suit Samus on the stage select but not on the actual character select.

The only way to access her in Brawl was either a smash ball mid fight or to do the special input listed above. Sheik and Zelda were very much obvious and could be changed by selecting the character on the picture or just pressing X (on GameCube controller, also I might have the wrong button).

So, i play casually with my younger stepbrothers and the vast majority of the time we use FS meter and smash balls without other items. I can legitimately say that it is actually pretty fun to play like that, especially considering that the age difference. In some scenarios the final smashes can actually wind up more of a negative then a positive as a fair amount of them involve rushing forwards (yes, it can kill you, especially mac's and wario's)

I think it’s important to know that the game already has so much content. Simplifying a final smash would help leave room to put in other stuff for the game, so I can understand them for doing this. While, I do agree some final smashes should have been changed(Mario and Y/T Link), I think the new final smashes in general add some extra intensity to the game and I love it.

Back during brawl, Land Master was BY FAR the most powerful final smash. Once you killed your opponents, you just had to wait for them to leave the "safety platform," land on top of your tank, then fly up so high they get KO'ed. It was the only FS that could get 2 KO's from the same player easily, and the only one with a 6 KO potential.

Another thing that was worth mentioning, you said clearly Snake's smash got changed cause of the visible gun on screen. You also mentioned Inkling couldn't have a gun... So what about Bayo and Joker? They both have literal guns in their normal attacks that they can use anytime.

I didn’t like how they stripped Yoshi of his wings one of the coolest moments when things looked bleak and Yoshi takes off with wings and saves the day. I loved Solid Snake’s grenade launcher and loved how Samus transforms to cyborg Samus and then falls apart back to Zero Suit. Wish Captain Falcon used like a mega Falcon Punch and I loved the Landmaster idk why his voice changed

I'll always miss the ones in Brawl, even the Negitive Zone, IDC if it dosen't make sense I love how quirky and original it was, and i wish ppl would look at that more. Pikachu's kinda changed from Brawl to smash 4 by giving it a little small ball so you ckuld tell where to aim it. Though, here's a theory: what if it being uncontrollable practically was intentional? Like it's so strong it's so wild it goes crazy basically, buut that's just a theory, a Smash theory!

I don’t think Sakurai being bias is the reason that king dedede got his final smash changed three times, Considering that Kirby was the main reason he quit making them because there were too many Kirby games coming out at the time and The same thing is happening with smash Bros, that’s why he’s continuously stating he wants to retire because he doesn’t want to continue his burnout that he’s been having throughout the years and being harassed by fans for not getting certain characters in smash.

I would like R.O.B. to get a new Final Smash where, just for a quick bit, he turns into his alter-ego, the Ancient Minister, from Subspace Emissary and he either does a special laser there or detonates a small Subspace bomb in order to damage is enemy... it would be a really nice call back and it could be done pretty quick.

HOT TAKE, "No" I love transformation smashes being taken out (for the most part) where some did ad something unique to the game others, Like WARIO-MAN, really just made Wario OP, and in the end, final smashes are supposed to be a finishing move, not to turn the game into a 30 seconds bully-session. where I agree that some changes could have been handled with more care, The only Final smash I really think got changed for no reason is Pits sacred treasures, His current one is just so boring in comparison despite giving you more control.

@Pokehero191 my gueas is that eighter it was to long, (wich i doubth cause it wasn't really a transformation but rather like Robs new Final) or Sakurai thought it makes sence since, Spoiler, The sacred tresures were destroyed in KIU so he chose to use the ponys instead. Eighter way, i think Pit should have keept the tresures and DPit should have taken on Phos and lux (the unicorns strapped to the chariot) since DPit was the last to use it iirc. Would also change DPits Final to not be boring AF

With ganondorf, his entire appearance is based on OOT Ganondorf where in brawl and smash 4 it was Twilight Princess’s Ganondorf and the beast ganon was also the one that appeared in that game. i think they changed Ganondorf to OOT version for nostalgia sake as his appearance in melee was based on OOT

What I really appreciate about Snake two Final Smashes is that the one from Brawl references the Harrier battle from MGS2 with him firing explosives from a helicopter and the one from Ultimate referencing Peace Walker with the tossing of the marker and calling for an air strike. I prefer the grenade launcher overall, but MGS2 and MGSPW are two of my favorite games from that series, so seeing them get shout-outs in some form is awesome to me. On the music front, however, still upset that we didn't get "Koi no Yokushiryoku", "Heavens Divide", "Inori no Uta" or "Metal Gear Saga"!! Also, I've always wondered why Nintendo didn't let Snake use something like the tranquilizer from Project M, as it's a nonetheless weapon all the player characters use in Metal Gear and isn't a lethal gun, so their "no guns" rule doesn't apply to it. Also, Joker has a literal gun and Bayonetta arguably has 2, even though they are magical, so "no realistic guns" is a moot point, imo.

To be fair, a lot of the final smashes they have changed DID kinda suck. There were still some that were better before (Bowser, Pit’s second ons), but still, most of them just weren’t very good (Luigi, Donkey Kong, Fox, Falco, Wolf, Kirby)

27:36 Inkling uses an ink gun, a nonlethal weapon (at least in the real world). The same can not be said for David AKA Snake. However, keeping the Final Smash the same but having Snake point at the crosshair or something to censor the real gun wouldn’t have “disrupted gameplay” any more than what we got. I’m pretty sure Snake is intangible through the new Final Smash, so why not have him jump into the foreground instead? It was a truly unique way to interact with the stage. Lots of characters jump into the background for their FS’s nowadays, but I think Bowser Jr. has the only one that interacts with the foreground now.

yeah, when I saw toon and young links finals the first thought I had was "really" I mean for both characters they had more than enough stuff to change their fighting style completely. Toon Link could have had a mix of his games like for Wind Waker the baton, Phantom something to do with Ciela and the others or something at least, and spirit tracks could have like some of his weapons from there like a quick wind attack from the whirlwind. Young Link's fighting could have been focused entirely on the use of the transformation masks like for heavy Goron Link and for light Zora Link and for an air attack Deku Link and the final smash could have been him using the Fierce Deity mask.

The problems with the FS Meter are simple, but daunting to fix. I would quite like if it could be accepted into competitive play because it would add a zesty new layer of depth to matches and also give each character an “ultimate move” like many fighters have. The first problem is simply that the final smashes, no matter how streamline they are, are too overpowered. A staggering quantity of final smashes can just kill too early and too easily. They need to be weaker, but equally flashy finishing moves like similar moves are in other fighters. Subsequently, the second problem pertains to the FS Meter itself. The FS Meter, for some quackish reason, goes up more for TAKING hits than GIVING them. This quality just makes me quizzical; instead of a rightfully earned, spicy attack that can devastate your opponent, it is essentially a comeback mechanic or win condition like Lucario’s Aura, as it rewards you more for losing than winning. It should go up more for landing hits and combos. Quality play should be rewarded. If these problems are fixed, I could see final smashes being used competitively, which would be really fun. They just need to be toned down in terms of power and versatility so as to require more skill to pull off, and they should be tweaked to be bequeathed on players when they play well instead of the player who is losing. Quite simply, final smashes, if you want them to be utilized in competitive play, should be dazzling and powerful techniques that reward a player skilled enough to consistently earn and use them effectively.

Fundamentally, Nintendo isn't going to add a feature that will multiply advantage and help someone already ahead get further ahead in competitive. While I'm sure some people at Nintendo like the idea of Smashes being accepted in the competitive scene, it's not going to be at the expense of their basic core gameplay, and there basic core gameplay is friendly casual. Comebacks keep the game going, and knowing you can come back keep people from getting discouraged. On the flip side, a Smash Meter that rewarded the person who was already winning would just make winners win harder and make those who were struggling drop the game sooner. They aren't going to give a Blue Shall to the first place, in other words. That's the opposite of what Nintendo wants, and honestly would be not merely bad game design, but game design that sabotages their core market.

Luigi's old "Negative Zone" may not just be a reference to him being player 2 to Mario for so long. It could also be a reference to the Minus World from Super Mario Bros. The minus world is known for being very glitchy, being formed from literal garbage data, causing the levels and enemies within to look and act very strange. Underwater mushroom top levels, invisible bowsers, flying bloopers, (this was before lost levels) and fairly unusual color palettes. (It also looks different depending on which version of the game your playing) The fact his Brawl FS not only inverted colors, and caused various random effects, but is also called *NEGATIVE* zone on top of all that, makes me strongly believe this to be an intentional reference. (Additionally, there have been references to the minus world in other games as well. In Super Paper Mario, when Mario reaches "The Underwhere" the first npc he meets there says something along the lines of "Think of this place as World -1.")

This video isn't bad or anything, but you really should change the title to something like "The history and changes of Final Smashes". In its current state, it's basically the video version of a clickbaity recipe article. Just like in one of those you have to scroll through the likely false story about how the author's grandma made the recipe when they were little before having what you're actually interested in, here the main focus IMPLIED by the title (the reason of the changes) is just covered in the first one and last five minutes. Of a 35 minutes video. The remaining 82% of the video is just description of final smashes that were changed, not exactly what one would expect while clicking at the thumbnail. Aside from that, good video.

As a Woolly World enjoyer, here's my idea: Yoshi and all other characters turn into yarn versions. Whoever's a decent ways in front of Yoshi, he'll stick out his tongue and eat them, turn them into a yarn egg, and launch them off screen. This could also be done with regular yoshi, but I like yarn yoshi

When i play with friends the final smashes sometimes just feel unfair. I main Olimar and his final smash can be really devistating, but all of them feel a bit too powerful and half the time winning comes down to who uses their final first, at least in our experience.

Before brawl came out kid Icarus on the NES was not the only pit game. There was one that came out a little later on game boy. Although to be fair I learned that a lot later. I definitely agree with the change on Kirby's final smash, but I am happy that some semblance of his bra Final Smash returned in Ultimate thanks to the chef Kawasaki assist trophy. Actually there were multiple ways to access zero suit Samus in brawl. Yes the primary way is to use the Final Smash of Samus, but if you do the up taunt and down taunt quickly enough with Samus you'll transform into zero suit Samus right then and there, and then there's one more way which I believe that way is similar to how you will select Shiek instead of the Zelda when you go to that character slot and that is to hold the R button when you select Samus. Doing that you will start the battle out as zero suit Samus. Has someone who is a Sonic main I honestly approve the change of his final smash. Whenever I played basic brawl online back when brawl was the newest game when people turned on the smash ball it was game over. I would win every time if I got my final smash because it was so easy to just destroy everybody by flying around and just damaging and killing them with just my touch while I completely roam anywhere on the stage freely and far faster than any opponents can move. I'm not one who uses Final smashes anyways. I always have the smash ball off and the fs meter off, but if for some reason I'm playing a game that has final smashes, at the very least it's not and I win button if I get a final smash with Sonic now.

I really think they at least partially hoped the more hardcore community would give Final Smashes a chance to some capacity, but seeing as though even a meter and streamlined Final Smashes were still rejected immediately, this was yet another massive disappointment. Honestly, sometimes I feel like they should stop trying to pander so much to hardcore players. It’s not worth it, and given how nasty the Smash community can be a lot of the time, Sakurai should probably give up on trying to please them and just make what he wants, in my opinion.

In a game likes Arms there isn't this kind of depth; the reason why so many people treat Smash like a fighting game because the amount of game mechanics that line up WITH being a fighting game; HOWEVER it's also a party game.
