It seems to be a recurring pattern in the video game / home console industry: I remember very similar situations with Atari, & later with Sega, where console sales couldn't keep up with competitors so they shifted to software only.

Only difference between Atari and Sega is that Atari killed there consoles with one crappy game while SEGA screwed themselves with terrible business practice (in fact, it was Sony that truly did them in). Another is that Atari is now a company that sputtered off into obscurity while SEGA is still publishing titles that are critically acclaimed with some rather iconic characters attached to them.

I told my wife after the xbox one was out for about a year that I believed Xbox would stop manufacturing consoles and instead be like Sega and only make software. I still think this is a high possibility. The only thing I could see changing this is if Microsoft heavily invested Xbox into the handheld market. If an Xbox handheld came out that was more modular than the Steam Deck, and just as capable, if not more, that could be upgraded over time, I could see them thriving. A handheld that had a modular CPU, GPU, RAM, and storage with regular support with upgrades from Xbox over time in terms of hardware and software, would be a perfect place for Game Pass, AND if it ran a version of windows that was clean and efficient you could even play steam games on it. This could be their future. In an alternate world, it would be SICK to see Xbox decide to be a third party software developer, add gamepass to steam deck, and then Steam become a hardware manufacturer of handheld PCs. That would be neat. Ill always stick with the Nintendo Console and PC though. Ive owned a PS1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, and after PS2 ive always owned them for a short period of time and sold them from boredom. Started on a SNES as a kid, so Nintendo IPs have a special place in my heart. Want to see a Croc remaster come out on switch. Would be sweet.

I think if Xbox comes out with their next gen in 2026 and a handheld version at the same time that might help them especially if they connect to each other. So when you play at home and need to go you can continue playing on the go like their version of the switch and price right they can win.

The PS5 has been under preforming for Sony, not to mention that there is an astounding lack of exclusive titles that have still yet to showcase what this console really can do. Part of this is the timing, since 2020 was defiantly not the best year to be releasing a console (even Microsoft suffered from this mistake) and it could of done with another year before coming out (then it would of released with more titles). Another thing to keep in mind is that Sony suffered from a lack of stock since it was hard to find a PS5 when it launched. My knowledge may be sketchy on this, but the PS5 became more available 2 years after its release, and there are a lot of people who are very underwhelmed about there 600 to 700 dollar purchase. Some will say it's just a Beefed up PS4 (since that is the only console it has backwards support for) and would of been better off sticking with or buying the PS4. There is a reason why people have been actively calling it a Generation of Nothing...

Rare is dead, only way we could get one is if Microsoft has another development team make it like for the new Killer Instinct game. Seeing as most of the original BK staff are at "Play Tonic" now they should be the ones to make a new Banjo game. The staff expressed interest in making one.

Currently I feel like Xbox is getting phased out of the console market and it's becoming a Sega situation. What they can do is start making budget consoles, and handheld as most of they're sales are with the series S. They may become a 3rd party developer in the future and just rely on gamepsss for their income. I don't think they'll go out of business anytime soon since they're still able to sell quite a lot of consoles

The PS3, while not as "nostalgic" as the 360, was still more powerful and beat it in sales in the end. The PS4 DESTROYED the Xbox One. Sure, it doesn't have backwards compatibility, but it still had better exclusives and was more powerful. I've legitimately never met a person who would rather get a Series X or the god-awful, digital-only Series S over a PS5. And then Nintendo is just over in the corner, chilling, knowing they'll always be the best, even if they're not the most powerful. Hell, I'd even say the Dreamcast was better than the original Xbox. The Xbox has never been the best.

Super NES more powerful than Sega Genesis, N64 (Project Reality) more powerful than ps1, GC & Xbox more powerful than ps2. Sony lies a lot, and so did Sega back in the day. Only starting with Wii did Nintendo shift a major focus they've always had with powerful hardware over to their strengths of creativity and game control. Thing is, today's Nintendo is a very different beast with Movies and full on Universal Theme parks so they're getting more muscle as a company. Therefore, they could easily make the Switch 2 a home/portable powerhouse, as they actually used to, with the mandatory Nintendo magic sprinkled in for good measure.

Hardware has reached a critical mass in terms of specs and it’s sad gamers care more for specs than they do for decent games. I’m so glad I kept my Xbox 360 and 150+ games instead of selling it because those games were FUN!

Heck I still find old 8-bit and 16-bit games fun. This is basically the modern day but wars, except instead of focusing on bits, they're obsessed with FPS, realism, and such. I don't care how realistic a game looks, it still looks uncanny valley to me. I'll take expressionism graphics (like 2D art or toon shading effects) over realistic ones any day

They created the system of achievements and having a “gamer tag”, they tried to innovate games with the Kinect but didn’t pan super well, halo created the fps genre so that’s also something pretty big. Xbox also introduced bottoms in the actual stick that can be pressed. Small but a QoL. They also started the whole “entertainment system” trend with having other things on consoles and not just games. Before you could only play games, now we got Netflix, KZbin, etc. Backwards compatibility is a big thing, but it was the same time as Nintendo I think, still ahead of PS. But yes, I think that’s pretty much it. Xbox had large internal storages, they were the first at this in fact, competitors relied on memory cards

You complain about Nintendo "making the same games "over and over," (I wasn't aware, Super Mario Odyssey, SMB Wonder, and Super Mario RPG were the "same game?") yet claim when they try to make original unique consoles and games, they're "gimmicky?" Which is it? Do you want "normal games," (the same ol' games) or you want something new/gimmicky? And y'know, if Nintendo didn't make gimmicky experimental controllers and stuff, we wouldn't have things like the D-Pad, shoulder L&R buttons, Zapper gun, ROB, Rumble Pack, thumb sized analogue sticks, and such, right? Nintendo were the ones that either invented those or perfected them.

Xbox has 21 million series systems out. While that is half of Sony right now, it's still not a bad start. And that's the problem is that it still feels like this generation has just started. So when they talk next systems, it baffles me. I honestly don't see xbox going anywhere, and I really do approve of their way of releasing their games onto other platforms after a year. When a company has a potential base of 21 million and they say it's not enough, all I can think is "GREED". The funny thing is, all it takes is one banger to be released and everyone will be doing a 180 in their attitudes. That's the thing I hate about the current environment.

Xbox made some big mistakes with this generation that would have made them take the lead. Game pass and some key hardware focus would have made them unstoppable. I play game pass on android handhelds like the Anbernic rg556.

Me personally i've never been a brand loyalist and why would i ? I'm not married to them so i can buy other consoles from other companies.
