This video is a complete review of the European version of the NIO ES8 complete with English UI and all. Because NIO is a Chinese company, western media has not yet had a chance really get to know the company's products like the ES8, in this video we do our best to rectify that and show people just how amazing this car is.

I’m the owner of Nio ES6, the vehicle is in China now but I’m in Sweden right now. To be honest, I think Nio will really change the way people think about EVs. There are more than 520 Nio battery swap stations in China and will make it to 700 at the end of year. We had a 5500 km trip in 12 days during this summer with ES6, total cost on electricity is only 420 RMB (65 USD), because every Nio users have at least 4 free battery swap opportunities every month. Hope Nio can have more global markets soon.

We shall see if the battery swap works outside of china.. Sometimes you have to change customer behaviour.. Its no different than when US companies go to china and try to push their ways/products on chinese consumers.. sometimes it just doesn't work.. (ie. look at failed walmart for example in china.. trying to push chinese consumer behavior on the american ways..)

@@Mellowyellow8888 I live in the US and I would love to buy a car without a battery. Why is that ? Because replacing a battery is like $20k-$25k and battery tech is constantly changing. If I can rent a battery, I can always have a well functioning battery in my car and with the latest battery tech and range. The battery longevity and cost of replacement is what scares me the most about owning an electric car. So NIO’s solution is genius! Also, a car with a swappable/removable battery will retain its value better than a car with a non-removable battery, mark my words.

@@Matys1975 I too live in the US . Battery swapping is not some new idea.. Tesla tested this path at one point and subsequently abandoned it. Also I saw there's another company in the bay area in the news recently also pushing it...so far I'm not sure if it will catch on.. if you are concerned with longevity.. keep waiting on the sidelines.. population density in China is quite different than in US.. also, I'm not sure nio can make it in the US with cyber security concerns.. how will they do over the air updates? It could be a while before nio can make it into the US market.

@@Mellowyellow8888 Who cares if Tesla tried it, they are not God, in fact they can’t even make their body panels fit together properly most of the time. Tesla’s have great powertrains but the exterior and interior quality is kind of a joke. By the way, the population density of Norway is probably much lower than that of the USA. So we will see how well battery swapping works out for NIO there.

@Dyson Yamagata which is crazy considering most of the electronics we use down to the internet mkdems/routers we use here in the US are most made in China. The internal chipsets are made in China. Most of our cellphones are made in China. Most of our smart TVs andbtheir internal components are made in China. If they wanted our data they could easily get it. I think what the US is afraid of is their legacy autos like Ford and GM will go out of business when better Chinese EVs are on our streets.

One of the best NIO review I have ever seen. Just a small feedback, you forgot to mention the biggest advantage of owning NIO: EV battery degradation. NIO owners will not worry about battery efficiency and most importantly, worrying about paying crazy battery replacement $$$ after losing their warranty. Between $13,000 to $20,000 for a Model S premium sedan At least $14,000 for a Model X premium SUV At least $13,000 for the Model 3 entry-level sedan We have seen quotes from Tesla for battery pack replacements between $20,000 and $30,000.

I have ES6 in shanghai china for almost 1 year . I enjoy every moment i drive and with it . ES6 same wide and tall as ES8, but ~20cm short in length . slick fast and quiet....only feel nerves when it is in narrow alley, its quite big suv. I am 170cm with 30+year driving experience 50years old man. Only optional adjustment fee I took to this SUV is 200 RMB/-30 USD to permanently lower the driving seat for my 160cm wife, for me and my 185cm son its totally not a problem. Great SUV. Great shoot ! I have decided to wait till 2025 to buy my first EV because I believe EV prices will come down dramatically over the next 3 to 5 years. Long both NIO and TSLA, I had my heart set on a Tesla Y or X, but after test-driving the EC6 and ES8, I've since been struggling with the decision. The ride itself and the passenger experience in the NIO surprised me. What is still holding me back from ordering a NIO is a) I want to know more about their car safety ratings and b) I don't know whether or not to buy the car with a battery or without since it's unclear how the resale market will respond to cars without batteries. For reference, a ES8 with all options reviewed in this video sells for a bit over 600k RMB right now in China, whereas one without a battery would cost 480k.

Totally agree with you there, I am having the same struggle. Though if anything I would get a NIO without a battery, especially since better batteries for NIO are coming. Right now the only thing Tesla still has going for it is future autonomy, but is that enough to justify the higher price and live without the amazing services NIO comes with?

@@cleantechnica You are right about the battery. Even with a 100kWh battery, the NIO gets less mileage than a Tesla, noticeably, at the moment. Regarding price, if comparing prices in China, Tesla is actually the cheaper car by quite a lot. After subsidies, you can get the base Tesla Y for 276k RMB. None of the three models NIO makes comes close unless you buy the car only (without the battery). To lease the battery, it's 1500 RMB/month, which is great for drivers that get in a lot of mileage, but for users that don't drive long distances, it's not a cheap solution.

Hmmm yes, you make a good point. I underestimated the price at which Tesla can produce vehicles locally. In Europe its a different story. Shipping without a battery is also very useful from a tax perspective.

Tesla doesn't pass the German TÜV safety tests, but Nio does. If you think safety the choice is really just one of them. Nicely, and against my previous prejudices, Chinese Nio, BYD, XPeng and MG are all scoring wonderfully within European safety tests.

I also have some hope that this fragrance is not that strong. Most importantly it's not always on, which is the problem with all other car fragrances, even when it's off it gives off a smell (even if it is a wekaer one). Also for the people that do like it, it's easy to change smells so hopefully the car itself won't start smelling so quickly like so many taxis do. Manually switching between 3 air fresheners while driving is not actually possible.

It's possible that NIO has not yet made a final decision on that (need to double check). You see they plan to study the launch in Norway to plan the rest of the European expansion, this might also have a bearing on the US. However Germany is getting either the ET7 or ES6 in 2022.

Maybe average Tesla charging speed is 108kw, but important for travelling is the speed in the lower area/SoC (10-60%) ...and here the average is about 150kw ! (and starts with 250kw). So only 10 - 15 min. and u can go on (because u already have enough range and dont need to charge over 60% (and there are SuCs everywhere). And that's a big difference / advantage over slower charging speeds (in this lower SoC) ! And yes, most people dont travel that often, but if u travel it really matters. BUT overall it's a good thing too ...to know if there is a spontaneous trip, just charge 10 min. and ready to go ! PS. I think swapping wont last that long as it is unnecessary (with this high and overall rising charging speeds (and good ranges).

Yup you make a good point and I think the chart reflects most of what you are saying. However I don't think charging wil improve significantly behind what the Taycan has anytime soon. Personally I don't mind supercharging either and hardly roadtrip, but having a battery that will never degrade and range that will improve over the years is alluring. I will do a complete deep drive on it some day.

Regarding the no start button. What do you do when leaving your teenager in the car while shopping and you just want the infotainment running and maybe the heater? I personally like to be able to control exactly what is turned on and when.

If the key is not present, the car won't shift into drive or reverse, but so long as there is someone in the car or the vehicle is unlocked, the screen stays on. Also besides for some strange reason leaving the key inside, this teenager would have to be sitting in the drivers seat for some reason and be pressing the break pedal and then shifting.

As far as we are aware, besides interior/exterior colors, the choices are 5 seat, 6 seat and 7 seat configurations. Then you can also choose between a 70 kWh and a 100 kWh battery. Though if you buy it without a battery (huge discount) you can change between the two battery sizes whenever you want a pay a bit more/less depending on the pack you use at that moment.

When you say Hi Nomi it will look at the person that said it. If you ask it to turn on seat massage for example, it will know for which seat to do it for. Whether windows or seat heating works for the second row I am not certain, didn't try that.

There is a mic on top of every seat, so Nomi recognizes which person is giving the command, for e.g, u say lower the window 25%, Nomi will only lower window by u.

Yes this was also a discussion I had with NIO. They also found my remark regarding audio strange since it should have been a 12 speaker car that I was in. However, back then they did not yet have the signature edition emblem. We were planning on re-testing it this time but we didn't get around to it. But what I figure is you can always go to a garage and try to switch out the speakers, add a pieve if hardware to adjust EQ. I might have an answer for you a month from now. Will try to publish it as part of a new NIO article/video.

@@cleantechnica sounds awesome! I am flying to Oslo myself about a week from now; sole purpose is seeing the car, driving it and deciding on color and trim .. seems to me that this might be our next family car 🤩

I look forward to hearing your opinion. Also just a thought, if you are concerned about Media in the car, consider this, the secure storage between the first two seats can easily hold and charge tablets for the whole family (nowadays a 10 inch Samsung Galaxy Tab A is like $200 or less when bought at the right time). Mount it and enjoy the car's wifi Hotspot, that way you are not dependant on the automaker for new entertainment software and the hardware doesn't get a outdated. If you have the cash you can even buy 12 inch tablets.

This ES8 came out in 2019 in China, so its got a few years of production under its belt… will there be a mid cycle refresh coming soon? Or will this platform keep going like Tesla did with the Model S?

That is a very good question, but for now we don't have an answer to that, but I will try to ask them that.

i think right now they focus on nio et7. They also have es6 i think. But only es8 came to norway.

So we asked, ES8 hardware has been upgraded, next one is currently not planned, so for sure not in the within the next year.

It is understood that there are up to 188 product updates for the 2020 es8, including chrome plated trim strips, running water steering lights, Antarctic Xinglan car enterprise color, new 9.8-inch full LCD instrument, 11.3-inch second-generation central control screen, etc.
