Nissan Xterra P0500 code vehicle speed sensor problem, going into limp mode/Engine revving up

I have a 2004 Xterra that has 277,000 miles on it. I paid 500 bucks for it because it had no reverse ut it drove perfect in all foward gears, i thouht it was a solenoid or something simple well i ended up totally rebuilding this transmission myself the reverse drum bushing was totally gone and in the pan as brass dust it took me 4 DAYS just to get this transmission OUT of this 4x4 truck another 8 months of watching you tube videos and going to transmission shops for help, id rebuilt chevy trans before but this was a whole nother animal i finally got it all together and back in almost a year later and it drives in reverse and foward but the truck feels like its starting off in second gear . It shifts smoothly at least one time and the od button changes the rpm some but it doesnt feel like it goes into the last gear. Midrange power is good but will bareley go up my steep driveway. When you manually shift to first gear it doesnt appear to affect the transmission much unless your going 30 mph or so but our 2001 Xterra 2x2 when you place it in first it really feels like its in a low gear and it shits at leat 3 times where as the 2004 shits once. I have a 0505 idle control circuit code but thats it but ive had multiple misfires and o2 senor code that i replaced . The fuel pressure regulator was bad allowing too much fuel to return to the tank. It would hunt and surge at idle untill you pinched the fuel return line with a pair of pliers and it would smooth right out because the fuel rail was getting full pressure. Now its running ok but has no pickup at all from a standing start but its decent once your going over 30 mph. I have worked on this truck which is like new cosmetically inside and out for over a year and its just kicked my ass, I have close to 4 grand in this thing , i bought a NEW Torque Converter a NEW front pump and stator thing that the reverse drum rides on all new clutches and steels and all new gaskets and replaced all the 0 rings that came in thi 400 dollar kit from Trans pac, i dont know what else to do . Does this truck have a reduced power/limp mode? and how does the dash cluster affect this vehicles drivabilaty and do you think i have a bad dash? it ran fine till i replaced the transmission. the battery was disconnected for a year so mabey the computer lost all its drive settings and i just need to go through some drive cycles for the ECM to re learn some parameters.

I had the p0500 (speed sensor) and p0328 (knock sensor). I got another dash off eBay switched them out cleared my codes and no longer having any problems. Hopefully it stays that way thanks a lot!

That’s awesome such a crazy thing to have wrong with something and cause a problem inside the transmission. I suppose to somebody who is a little bit above amateur like myself it kind of makes sense. But nevertheless it seems a little bit weird

My 09 xterra is doing the same, but no codes or check engine...but VDC/Slip light on? i changed both camshaft sensors but didnt help.

Let me add a little as to why the speedometer cluster causes the stutter issue. The signal from the speed encoder off the transmission feeds to the speedometer cluster. The speedometer cluster displays the speed AND re-sends the signal to the ECU for engine response. Catch that? The speed signal from the transmission DOES NOT go directly to the ECU. Curious way of doing that. Anyways, when an issue develops with the speedometer cluster, the ECU gets mixed signals as to what speed the truck is actually moving at. When the signal drops, the engine thinks the truck is stopped and should be idling. I have an 04. I disassembled the cluster but could not figure out where/how to go about repairing it. Would be nice if someone were to post pics or a vid on potential locations to look at. This video is still great. Very helpful. Thanks!

Did you also replace the speed sensor? My 2004 armada did this 2 weeks ago but has not done it since. I thought the transmission was gone. I pulled into a parking lot, cut the truck off for about 10 minutes as I checked the fluid, turned the truck back on and it ran fine since. I took it as a sign of a possible future problem.

Seems I came to the right place. My 04 Xterra had a intermittently failing speedometer a while ago, and today the small issue showed up again, but this time it also tried going into limp mode, so I pulled over. About 5 minut4es later I got back in and it ran great till I got all the way home in the next town. I want to get his fixed before going to Vegas in a few days. Between this video, and your comment, my situation looks good. I'll just pull it out and solder everything tomorrow.

@@allanmain5666 Sorry to hear the issue popped up for you. Sounds like you got a good plan. I ended up replacing my cluster with another due to not having the right soldering equipment at the time. Runs great even up to today.

I took my cluster off to replace the lightbulbs because one of them was not working. I put everything back together and it starts acting up lights going damn all Kaiser stuff, not wanting to go like kinda like the alternator problem symptom.

Is the crankshaft position sensor different then the speed sensor??

Yes the crankshaft position sensor is located on the engine and if it is defective your engine will not run

I have 2004 Xterra with a P0744 and a knock sensor code and no service engine light, it won't shift out of 2nd... do you think this could be the instrument panel Guage cluster?

Hey clay, when you scanned was it showing the VSS live data? My scan tool is showing the correct speed and so is my speedometer but I'm always getting p0500

Soo umm whats the fix? You went through the removal then just stopped the video. What was the actual problem.. i am great at soldering.. i have the exact same symptoms in my 02 frontier.

Sorry about that all you have to do is watch the video and listen unfortunately I do not show you me soldering it in repairing it but I will tell you it did fix the problem . This is exactly what my 2004 xterra is doing. I did not know what the hell was going on. Also the speedometer does not work when this is happening, did your speedometer do that?

Getting the same problem. Check light on and when I scan it saying p0500 vehicle speed sensor A. Change the sensor but still getting the problem that u having. Help please.

Re-soldering the dash cluster fixed mine 100% I hope the video was helpful I recommend finding someone to do the work for you take it to like a TV repair shop or computer repair shop they will find the broken solder joints or you can send it to Dash doctor in Grand Rapids Michigan look him up on the Internet he’s a good guy his name is Josh

hey, believe it or not, if you already changed the senor, there is a way to check if all your needles are working on your dash, (you can find several videos - on you tube already, on this problem)... now, if your dash is bad, you can go to a junkyard (auto salvage) and buy another dash.... which will solve your problem, without soldering nothing... just replace the whole thing. that's what I did to solve my problem.

Thanks for this video having the same issue. I have that Lady gaga song stuck in my head now. But why would re-soldering the instrument cluster fix a issue with vehicle losing power at highway speeds. Do you have the article where you received your repair information?

Well that is a control module code more than likely you have a broken valve control board one of the solder arms came loose., or or you have coolant inside your transmission I highly recommend you get that checked out right away Pull your transmission dipstick and make sure there’s not coolant inside your transmission
