Actually Nite Owl is supposed to be the Watchman Universe's version of Blue Beetle, specifically Ted Kord.

I was there when the comic book series began. An avid collector in the 1980's, I had already been aware of Alan Moore through the Swamp Thing series. I started collecting Watchmen from the first issue. When I realized there would be a graphic novel, I stopped and waited until it was printed. I wanted to read the whole story all at once. I wasn't disappointed. I am astonished that the film turned out to be as good as it is. The story seemed too complex to be encapsulated in a single movie. I haven't seen the TV show. Maybe someday.:)

Jason Bean, from what I remember they did a different take that seemed to be quite a far cry from the source material. You’ll definitely need an open mind to watch it.

In the DC animated movie version of crisis on infinite earths Owl man is fighting batman and is explaining how the infinite universe works and mentions that there are versions of himself that batman would find quite charming and the first thing I always thought was that he was talking about this guy.

Nite Owl is actually based on Blue Beetle (Ted Kord)... the entire Watchmen characters was all based on the original Charlton Comics characters that was later absorbed into the DC Universe during the early 80s

@Damian Prock nah Milestone was always under DC since it's creation... kind of like Wildstorm... Charleton Comics was another comic book company that was independent of DC and Marvel... so you can say it was more like Fawcett Comics (original Captain Marvel / Shazam publisher) I think Charleton was purchased and absorbed into DC right before Crisis of Infinite Earths and their Earth was dubbed Earth 4

He's also kind of like Spider-Man, as without the mask, dude's someone with no girlfriend, very little hobbies, and zero social skills. He was a nerdy loser who wanted to be somebody. Think of Dan Dreiberg as what if Peter Parker donned the mask to try and make himself feel more confident around people, including his crush? What if he never got that lesson about responsibility?

@@Karlos1234ify Dreiberg definitely changes after his arrest in 1995 and basically becomes more like Rorschach than he would ever like to admit. He isn't in the tv show, as he's in prison for violating the Keene act, but the Peteypedia files mention that he refused a plea deal to join the Anti-Vigilante Task Force by quoting Rorschach, saying: "Never compromise, never surrender." This makes Dreiberg way more interesting than the insecure goody two shoes he used to be, just like how Cyclops from the X-Men only started to become interesting once he gave up being Professor Xavier's teacher's pet and started to lean more towards Magneto's worldview.

@@damianprock1650 Batman always still felt larger than life to me. Always came off as an unflinching dedicated bad ass. I get that they tried to create a story with more down to earth characters that people could imagine themselves being but it just doesn't work for me. Night Owl especially of all the characters in the movie seemed whiney, lacking in confidence at EVERY turn, and in a state of deep depression half the time. There wasn't one point in the movie where I was like "wow, what a bad ass how cool!". Nite Owl may be a hero but he doesn't seem very super in the movie.

Watchmen was an almost satirical approach in that superheroes in real life would probably have lots of issues, problems and questionable personalities and motives so you're really not meant to identify with them in the way you would with a Marvel or DC hero. The Moth ended up in an insane asylum and Silk Spectre 2 hated being a superhero...at first.
