Ah man, I do love that nitro finish. Cool colours too! Would absolutely get one, but without the fake wear. That way the guitar would eventually tell its own story, instead of that of a piece of sandpaper. That's just my opinion though and I totally get why people really like the look of these.
@conorfurlong

For what it’s worth, I would definitely buy a nitro Mexican Fender without the factory roadworn effect. If it came with accidental cracks during shipping or whatever, no problem, I just think the factory ‘roadworn’ effect looks a bit fake. I like the look of a beaten up guitar, it’s just that “roadworn” doesn’t look like an old beaten up guitar, it looks like a new guitar that’s been deliberately damaged for a visual effect. One of the things that bothers me about roadworn is the matte finish of the body. Vintage guitars aren’t matte, they’re still shiney. If Fender could offer nitro non-roadworn in addition to roadworn, that would be great.
@charlesbolton8471

They used to do Special Runs of non Roadworn Nitro pretty often in the Classic line before it got replaced by the Vintera line. As far as I know they haven’t offered it yet on a non Road Worn Vintera.

@@charlesbolton8471 I didn’t know that. Interesting. Hopefully they do it again. I suspect nitro non-roadworn would be very popular.

I agree, although I just ended up getting a road worn one and hopefully my own wear will slowly make it look a bit more natural. I’m pretty sure Lee said once that the Mexican factory nitro finish just isn’t good enough to offer without factory wear to cover that up, so it’s probably unlikely unfortunately.
@conorfurlong
@conorfurlong Жыл бұрын
@@Jamie_kemp I’d be interested to know how the roadworn ages over time. I know someone who bought one 3 years ago and plays a lot in a band but the guitar hasn’t aged since and looks identical to when he bought it. It doesn’t seem to be as easy to wear in as some people claim.

I bought the first 60s roadworn series in Olympic White then added 65 custom shop pickups and a cold rolled steel trem block. Best strat I have ever played and I have had tons from MIJ to AVRI. I was lucky enough to get a 2 piece center joined body and flamed maple neck on mine...obviously someone picked some good bits! And let's not forget the compulsory tone pot mod so the bridge pickup is useable.

I have an srv strat with TS and prefer pretty much all the custom shop pickups over it lol they are way too hot to sound anything like a vintage guitar. The 90s model Texas specials in mine can sound good in certain scenarios (very few) but they don’t clean up well and seem to be too overwound (mid heavy) for what I’ve come to realize a vintage guitar “should” sound like. Slightly underwound neck and middle pickup around 5-6k resistance and a slightly hotter bridge pickup 6-7k make for an amazing setup. I assume you want a vintage sound because you’re inquiring about a vintage guitar but I could be wrong I can help point you in the right direction on a set of pickups if you tell me what kind of genre or sound you’re looking to get from them?

For all you wanting a nitro finish on your old Mexican Fender, just buy a spray can nitro kit from Stew Mac or other similar outlet. I've done it on a buddy's Squier (4 color tobacco burst) and it turned out fantastic and looks even better today than it did when I finished it a couple years ago (no it hasn't "relic'd", the finish is just starting to fade nicer together. I'm definitely going to do it with my recently acquired used Mexican strat someone set up with American hardware and pickups. Deals are to be had out there people.

Texas Specials were not intended as something new for SRV which he didn't have a chance to try. The pickups are a replica of the pickups which he was already using and they were intended for his signature Strat. SRV was using a standard pre-1998 57-62 pickup set. The resistance tolerance at that time was relatively high, so all what SRV has done is that he handpicked a 57-62 pickup set with resistance deviations that delivered the sound he wanted. The target value for 57-62 pickups was 6K, the tolerance was plus/minus 10%. Then they selected higher deviations from the target value for bridge and the lower ones for neck and middle. SRV picked 5.94K for neck, 6.27K for middle and 6.56K for bridge, and that's what SRV had in his Number One. All of what Fender had to do to design Texas Specials is to use their standard 57-62 pickup set and calibrate it to resistances chosen by SRV. That's all what Texas Special pickups really are. Technically they are still 57-62s, because Texas Specials' resistance is still within tolerance for the pre-98 57-62s (5.4K - 6.6K). Technically it is correct to say that the original Number One was loaded with Texas Specials.
