28:00 Little story: I used to live in London (moved to America in 2018) and always been quite like lazy to go to Guilford and check Andertons’s shop.. despite of being a fan of their channel and online shop.. back in March this year I did a cheeky business trip to London and took the chance to go to Guilford and check Pete’s 64 .. tried the Olympic white, the candy apple red, did not feel right, then I kept messing around with several guitars.. nothing called my attention .. on my way out of the Custom Shop room next to the exit door I found a very not very nice looking guitar (my taste) hanging just in the corner... I picked it up who knows why.. and played an open G chord.. it changed everything that day.. I decided to take it to the sound booth in order to hear her roar with an amp.. a staff member looked at me with the guitar waiting and he said: “that’s a pretty cool axe”...my answer was: “don’t like the colour nor the gold hardware and white tuners... but sounded amazing”. Once plugged the guitar was a beast..as soon as I left the booth I asked the price.. my jaw dropped, more than what I would pay for a guitar... on the train back to London, looking at KZbin I see Pete and Captain testing these guitar and the Captain was playing the one that I just got my hands on a few minutes before, maybe a sign?.. Fee weeks later, sitting at home and with a brand new 63’ willcutt reissue recently bought online, which did not have the magic I felt back in Guilford.. It dawned on me that you don’t turn 40yo every day ;)... The video of the Sage Green strat that is on my lap right now: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iIfMhmqNirSVgaM&feature=share let alone that now I love the colour, golden hardware and pearly tuners ;)

Regarding yellowing with age - I have a '87 American Standard Strat (in Torino Red), and its pickguard and controls have yellowed considerably. However, the pickup covers have not yellowed at all. As I've been the sole owner, I know these are all original parts. The yellowing on the pickguard is due to UV light - under the controls there remains a white ring. Also, paint on this guitar is polyurethane, and its not worn off or checked at all (no surprise), but it has noticeably settled into the wood grain, to the point its clearly a 3 piece body. It looks nothing like these relic'd guitars (which I really like), but its definitely got its own "vintage" vibe going on. Just imagine, its 33 years old now. When I bought it in '87, the only strats that were that old were all made in 1954!

I bought a brand new Stratocaster some years ago, and fell over as I was leaving the shop, knocking a chunk out of the lower bout (no, I wasn't drunk: it was winter and the steps were icy) . Instant relic! And I saved myself a few thousand pounds in the bargain! Seriously, I'm not going to hate on relics, even though I don't care for them myself. But you posed a question at the beginning, as to why someone would buy an expensive Stratocaster copy (I prefer "homage"... [tongue in cheek mode off]) rather than the real article. Personally, I would happily buy a British "Strat" hand made to my own specifications, so that is unique to me, and that is set up is to my liking, straight from the factory. That doesn't mean to say I would turn down a Fender version: in fact I do have a genuine Fender Stratocaster. And yes, it's the one I "relic-ed" falling over.

Admit it. Pete specifically made that purple Strat for himself, so he can own a matching Strat/Tele set. As for the blue sparkle, and the TV Jones, I am so into this. The older I get, the more I appreciate relic guitars, as I don't have another 35 years to relic it myself by playing it. My old Les Paul doesn't have any paint missing, but it does have yellowing, chips in the finish around the edges and the finish itself is so cracked, it looks like a road map, from that time when it had to ride under a Greyhound bus in the winter. The back has some buckle rash, but it merely mottled the finish. It's also ridiculously heavy. They really built 'em to last.
@gregtoolson16064 жыл бұрын
But a relic'd guitar doesn't come with the memory/story of the winter Greyhound bus ride.
@oskarileikos4 жыл бұрын
@@gregtoolson1606 it's a guitar, not a photo album. Yeah cool memories are cool but first of all it's an instrument to be played.
@gregtoolson16064 жыл бұрын
@@oskarileikos Then why buy a relic'd, which charges extra for all those pretend "cool memories?" A relic'd guitar is like a photo album, but instead of putting your own pictures in it, you leave the stock photos of the models. "is that your dad?" No it's just some random old guy they took a picture of to sell the photo album. "Where'd this scratch on your guitar come from?" Oh, I bought it like that. In fact, I paid extra for them to put the scratch on there for me. It makes it look like I've played it a lot. Isn't that cool? "No, it's pathetic."
@oskarileikos4 жыл бұрын
@@gregtoolson1606 no, sorry, now you are completely missing the point of relicing. To me, and to many others, relicing is first and foremost about the feel, not the looks. That's also what Lee and Pete are saying. Now, the looks do matter obviously as well. I want a guitar that looks a certain way. Relicing is a part of that. It's not "the story" or anything like that, it's just that relicing looks cool. And frankly, a guitar is an instrument for me. I play it. Everything else comes second. Including the memories and such.
@oskarileikos4 жыл бұрын
@@gregtoolson1606 also, if you buy a genuine vintage guitar with lots of wear and tear, you haven't put the scratches there yourself and the "memories" or "photos in the album" are not yours at all. You buy it, because it feels, looks and sounds cool. Same reason as with reliced guitars.

That sparkle tele is so sick. I have a Custom Shop double bound Tele in teal green metallic, love it, but I WANT that sparkle.
