I love Sanji so much. One of my favs. It does bum me out that I’d probably hate him in real life. A man who spies on women in bathrooms isn’t someone I would ever be cool with. It’s fucked up and violating. I don’t mind his blindness when it comes to fights because I see it as what he adopted from his mentor and his love for his mother. A flaw but a lovable one. True to self. He also doesn’t really love *all* women as he claims. Just attractive ones. Think of his reaction to Kokoro and Kureha. He doesn’t show them respect or adoration. He shows them disgust. That’s not kind. He’s not consistent. I just sort of try to ignore it in the manga/anime because he has so many other interesting qualities. I will say, the more vulnerable and less cool he allows himself to be, the more I see his growth and admire his character. When he asks Robinf for help? I was so proud of him.

I lowkey noticed that Sanji's idea of love feels fantasy-driven, something you see in children's books and princess books (we often see him imagining himself in scenarios where he's the knight in shining armor, wanting to save a princess, etc.). I kinda think that since he came from a family where he didn't receive love at all, he learned what love is and got the idea of love through the books he used to read while he's in the dungeon.

Tbh the way I interpret is that Sanji and the story at large has such an emphasis on Zeff's teaching on women to such an extent simply because it lets him run away from his past while tieing the only good side(which I think is also the same for cooking and the all blue) of his past back to him. It lets him escape from his past while stay true to his value, I also think it links to his humanity and desire to keep it hence why the gag is treated as such an obsession rather than plain chivalry because he has that desire to not lose his humanity therefore not becoming like his brothers and dad. Sanji never really brings it back and at every instance that he does bring it up, he doesn't go into detail and brushes it off, this is even symbolically show vs Mr 2 aka Bon Clay where he takes away the title of "Mr prince" and calls himself a cook(taking off his glasses in the process). I just think that fight is abt material mask vs mental mask but I'm not gonna get into that but they parallel each other very well with both of them also being characters that associated themselves with sacrifice(sanji straight up saying he was always ready to sacrifice himself in thriller bark).

One Piece Episode 1057 20:06 "Goodbye, Germa!" is one of the sickest moments in One Piece. I love Sanji's character he developed so much after the time skip. Sanji has now grown up, he has his own identity. he accepts his past and his name yet he is different. he is Vinsmoke Sanji yet he is not an inhuman monster of science, he is the straw hats cook. you see this is why I love One Piece Oda managed to give Sanji a power boost and make him grow as a character at the same time only Eiichiro Oda can do this.

Thank you for making this video. While I could understand the desire of many people wanting to see Sanji do cool stuff, this is a shonen manga after all, I'm happier with how much his character has been explored down to the minute details. Even something as minor as his body language, like the way he always ruffles his hair or curls up whenever he is stressed. Oda put so much effort in Sanji's character that very few One Piece characters can match. Sanji may not be the strongest or the coolest character in one Piece, he is the most complete, in my humble opinion.

This maybe your best :) I will add though that Oda still rewarded Sanji for never doubting a woman tears; when Pudding said 'I won't let our marriage be hell' this was the first time in the series she was being honest the 'true Pudding' if you will. That love she felt Sanji gave her is what made her attack Reiju in the first place she needed to prove to herself that she was indeed a monster and no one could actually love her, something that Sanji proved false when he called her beautiful during the wedding. So even though it seems initially that Oda is punishing Sanji for this belief it is, of course, revealed that this is one of Sanji greatest gifts :)

Sanji has the most painful and traumatic childhood in the story, him and Chopper. All other sad back stories have our crew being traumatized by strangers. Sanji and Chopper are the two whose trauma is inflicted by their family themselves. The people who are supposed to protect him and nurture him are the ones who are damaging him. That is true tragedy beyond all other tragedy. I love Sanji as a character. And his redemption has been one of my favorite events in all of Ons Piece.

My biggest issue was that he went from chivalrous, borderline chauvinistic, to full on misogynistic in Thriller Bark. To which I'd say that the king was the worst actor because he was encouraging guys to peep on his own daughter. And genuinely, if you think Nami offering to expose her body to people for money is morally equivalent to spying on someone without their consent, you might have some outlooks on life that you need to critically evaluate. Finally, the idea that his vinsmoke blood is what drives him to be perverted is both completely unfounded and also unnecessary. We know why he's so obsessed with women's affection, it's because the only positive reinforcement he ever received as a child was from women so that's what he seeks for validation. Which is honestly an interesting look into childhood trauma and how it manifests later in life. That doesn't make spying on naked women okay though.

I dont think most people tend to dislike Sanji's love of women in general, but more the shitty, harmful, offensive and downright disgusting ways it has been used at times. The three specifics being the fight against Absalom where he says he wanted his devil fruit specifically to spy on unsuspecting naked women, the genuinely awful transphobia of the Kamabaka Queendom, and him losing so much blood in Fishman island because boobs. Sanji as a character tends to be fantastic, but many of these moments are so egregious that it brings down the rest of his character for many. His love for women and his chivalry are aspects of his character that I admire a lot, but these moments go directly against that and it holds his character down enough that a character that in other situations likely would be my favorite, or at least in the very top, he becomes a character I love but cant ever become an absolute favorite.

I would also like to add that I'm pretty sure Sanji said to Judge that the reason why he saved their asses is that Zeff would never forgive him if he left his blood relations to die. It's possible he was lying but I just don't see any other reason besides that it would be too "dark" for Oda to have it happen that way, even if it makes more sense for Sanji to do so.

You probably would have a solid argument of that for Zoro pre time skip, but post time skip, Zoro has received a grand total of zero character development, making him the least developed character of the East Blue crew. You can love Zoro and think Zoro is cooler than Sanji, but as an actual realized character, that is a far cry. Being strong and cool do not make a better character.
