This game explains how triggers work better than anyone else could. It isn’t just scary things, it’s the memories associated with them. A piano isn’t scary, but because it’s associated with Sunny’s trauma, it’s a trigger to him. People need to understand this.
@alfonshedstrom98593 жыл бұрын
Though spiders are often just an innate fear that’s biologically created. I think it’s the only fear to Sunny that isnt associated with anything traumatic. Personally, I was born without the arachnophobia trait, despite my mother and sister being very scared of them. I find them a little.. cute in a way
@Buglin_Burger78783 жыл бұрын
@@alfonshedstrom9859 No it is related to trauma. When he gained his fear of heights/drowning it was because he turned and saw a spider on him which startled him and caused him to fall into water. Nearly dying had it not been for Mari. This goes back into Mari's death... where because she saved him she ended up dying later. It becomes a reminder in a way "I should've drowned then and the only reason I'm alive is because of the person I regret hurting." She saved him... but he hurt her. It is an infinite loop. Seeing a spider isn't just a natural fear. It is a reminder of the time he was saved by his dear sister. His... dear... broken... shattered... Well you get the point.
@adrianacaggese26063 жыл бұрын
Also, how a certain phobia can actually just be another way for your mind to face something bigger and unconscious (phobias are extreme, motiveless fears and they usually stem from some kind of trauma that may not be related to that). @@thevideo-beast122 I don’t get this opinion because... people generally have different opinions on what constitutes a “fun” game, right? OMORI ended up breaking me, because it tapped into one of my greatest fears - My fear of becoming angry. I'm generally a rather calm and collected person, and it takes a lot to make me angry. But when I'm angry, I feel myself lose control of who I believe to be me and someone else entirely takes my place, and that terrifies me. I don't know what I'll do when I lose control, and I always fear that I may end up doing something like what Sunny did. I end up just bottling that anger I feel out of fear of letting it out, and it all has to come out at some point, and I'm beyond terrified of reaching that point. Maybe it's time I look for help about this fear of mine.
@Magikoopa-tw8po3 жыл бұрын
As much as I don't like it, I have to say that's one of my biggest fears too. Emotions are weird, and I'm a very stoic person. Not many people I know understand why that is, not even my own family. But, I'm stoic because I don't want the sadness or the anger to take control of me, and make me do something to myself that could end up damaging people. Does that make me sound crazy? Yeah, probably. But we've also got that little voice in our head that tells us to keep going, to become better than the emotions. It's not easy. Believe me, I know. I think I understand this more than everyone else I know, whatever this is that causes me to be so stoic. I'm still working through this myself. But, that doesn't mean I can't help others through it, too. (If you've read this far, @On Tara's Mind, I'm sorry your comment was the one that had to be subject to this word vomit of a response, but it's just... @@TaraHalls Thank you as well. Omori terrifies me because it makes me face my own fears, but it has also helped me too. It showed me that everyone has people who care about them, that everyone can and hopefully does have their own Kel, Hero, Aubrey, and Basil, people who tell them they are worthwile, and love them no matter what the own Omori in our heads say. It's nearly theraputic in a way that's hard to describe. You would think that'd be obvious, but the sadness in me just... made me think I was worthless, that nobody did care, but thankfully, my friends helped me realize I was worth something. I'm better now and while it's not ALL better yet, I feel like a huge weight has been lifted by just talking to a perfect stranger in the comment section of a KZbin video, and I wish you luck with your journey as well.

I relate to this comment thread so much. I don't like being angry. Annoyed? Just fine. But being genuinely angry is a feeling I don't like. It begins feeding off of other people angry at me or others, and I just get even more angry. I know people think it's weird, but I can say I'm a pretty weird person. Honestly, what's even weirder about me is that I begin laughing at people who are worried about me. I don't know why, but it keeps happening. They begin worrying about my health and safety and I just begin laughing.

I'm assuming what's going on is that during Aubrey's first fight, Sunny's mind is still in Headspace RPG mode, so the Fight option is more enthusiastic while Run is not. It seems like the obvious answer to save Basil, just like when Boss kidnapped Dream Basil. It's only after everyone's horrified reactions to him attacking Aubrey with a knife that Sunny (as well as the Player) is fully brought back to reality and realizes that's not how things work in real world. All of a sudden, fighting seems a lot less appealing,.

This game hits harder for me because I used to have seven imaginary friends. I wouldn't call them imaginary friends, though. I'd call them more of imaginary presences. I had seven different thoughts and feelings. One was like Kel, a bit of happiness, a little bit of a loud but happy friend. One was Aubrey, a bit more angry but great for giving me motivation. One was Hero, a person who could always calm me down. One was Mari, one that I felt would take care of me. One was Sunny/Omori, one that helped me bottle emotions for when I could express them, and a great listener. And one was Basil, who represented me, an anxious and shy kid. I had another but he isn't really important as I only used him to cope twice. I was having a really hard time when my mind came up with these people. I was way to old for imaginary friends, 10-13. And these were personalities I pretended were my friends, and I used them to cope. When my parents fought, when I was depressed, anything. So seeing these characters in pain (especially Sunny and Basil, as I used them to cope the most) hits WAY to hard. Needless to say I cried so hard my parents were worried about me. MAJOR SPOILERS I love the final fight of omori. You aren’t fighting a boss that caused the events of the game to happen. You’re fighting a part of yourself you hate, a part of yourself that keeps you from facing the truth of your actions you know, but you pretend not to. You’re fighting to keep yourself from committing suicide. It also hits you differently than other emotional parts of games, it’s the kind of feeling where you are so immensely sad, you can’t cry (this could very well be different for others, but personally that’s how if felts for me). Omori is a culmination of the negative feelings you’ve felt the entire time, and losing to him will have you succumb to those feelings and jump off of the balcony, and winning will have you finally get over the death of Mari.

It's also a nice touch that they added Mari's "ghost" a few times in the game, a black-and-white version of Mari who talks and acts like she's some sort of spirit who visits you, or it could just be a figment of Sunny's imagination. You could take it either way. But regardless of how you choose to interpret this, Mari gives you a rather nice pep talk right before this fight, making Sunny promise to forgive himself. If that was a ghost rather than just a figment of the imagination, that's like the ultimate forgiveness, to ask her killer to forgive himself, knowing the kind of damage the act did to so many people.

The neutral ending in the Hikkikomori route where you move out seems to represent how the person you are controlling is no longer Sunny, but Omori. Note how during this route after a certain point menu's and the mirror now show Omori. So at the end of it all, that's not Sunny, but Omori disguised as Sunny. I think what gets me the most is the scene of Sunny laying in his hospital bed and... crying. Mainly because it's the first time in the game we ever see Sunny genuinely feel things. I guess fear and stressing out can count for that too - but that is something that one can expect when dealing with trauma. Except for those, sunny is always shown with a straight face. But there in the hospital? After finally confronting terrible, mean, guilt-filled part of himself, Sunny finally allows himself to feel. Holy fuck, everything went to shit! That was so bad! It's okay to cry about that. I guess I'm just a sucker for characters crying as a way to vent out pent-up emotions. It feels....freeing? Like a cold outside air after being stuck in your house for too long, y'know?
@evec96663 жыл бұрын
i felt the same way! that scene really, really struck a chord with me. seeing him let himself experience the sadness that came with the tragedy hits like a brick, but a nice brick, and it's a sign that he and basil can finally, truly move on. everything is really going to be okay:)

People who suffer depression are anxiety barely cry. Thats the thing. Crying is incredibly healthy, its what happens when the bottle you fill with your emotions erupts. One thing I always get sad at when people talk about omori is that headspace and Sunnys mental state only gets the title "surrealistic metaphor for depression" when it's not. Sunny has a disassociative disorder and none of the things are surrealistic nor metaphors, as someone with did too, this is so scarily accurate that it was hard for me to click trough the game sometimes.

@dantesdiscoinfernolol3 жыл бұрын
I agree, Headspace is memory suppression, NOT depression. That's part of what made this game feel so real for me: I don't have a full-on disorder, and I've never been through anything that traumatic, but I have blocked memories before without even realizing. I forget things that happened close to stressful events until I'm reminded of them by someone else. It's like...The memories were still there, I didn't lose them, but in cutting the connections to the stressful ones, the others got cut too. I can actually believe that, after something so awful, a kid like Sunny could forget what happened that day, and struggle to remember even if he decides he wants to.
@user-wv5ue7ny6u3 жыл бұрын
@@dantesdiscoinfernolol yes!!! That is exactly how it is. I for example cannot remember a lot of the stuff from my traumatic memories. I know they happened, but the rest gets fuzzy. omori made me BAWL. I’m the eldest of 3, with the closest to me being 7 years younger than i. i also grew up in a house that was rife with trauma, which meant it was my job to attempt at the protection of my siblings, shielding them from what was really happening. the character of Hero, and how his arc functioned was so, so impactful for me. mental illness is not just sadness. it makes you a scared, angry, volatile, and destructive person, often attacking the people closest to you like a shrapnel bomb. seeing hero, kind, loving big brother hero refuse to leave bed and lash out at his baby brother for no reason made me feel so seen. I was hero! i was that shrapnel bomb!!! Seeing that alone helped me cope a bit with the guilt i still have for my inability to protect them from me. nothing has made me feel worse about myself than knowing that i was downright awful to my baby brother because i couldn’t cope, and omori gave me a space to remind myself that i too, was a child.

Sunny has been in his own head viewing most fights as a joyful game with his friends and stabbing someone in those was just something you did, but in that fight he doesn’t hesitate to hurt his friend in a very dangerous and real way because he forgot that his dreams aren’t real. Spoilers The reason Sunny has an altercation with Mari is because in a bout of anger and frustration, he threw the violin that everyone worked so hard to buy him down the stairs on the day of their recital. Make no mistake: he *wanted* to play violin with Mari. The memories outright say that they caught him practicing with his mini violin that he used when he was younger. So everyone took some part time work to pitch in and buy him the violin. To Sunny, that violin literally represented everyone's faith in him. But you have to remember that he was 12, and that scene shows that he was already struggling to deal with expectation and letting people down from a young age. Mari was a perfectionist: she practiced piano intensely, writing notes all over her sheet music in a sloppy disorganized manner, contrasted to her normally put together attitude. To Mari, music was her major passion. To Sunny, music was a way to connect with his cool older sister who he loved more than anything else. The sister that rescued him from drowning and broke down in tears of relief when she saw he was okay. Mari, alongside all of his friends, meant the absolute world to Sunny. To play poorly meant to betray their friendship. So he committed his first act of escapism - he shattered the violin to escape the pressure he placed on himself. Mari, being the perfectionist but also just the older sibling, got upset. Not just because it was a gift from all of them, not just because she was a perfectionist, but *because she was extremely eager and excited to play with her younger brother.* She also loved him immensely, and to see him practice so hard to keep up probably filled her with an intense amount of pride for him. But the argument spiraled out of control, and a little push that would have been fine had it taken place in a safer spot became deadly. Mari's bad knee meant that she most likely did not have the strength or balance to keep herself upright even against her 12 year old brother, and the fight happened right at the foot of the stairway. Notice that the first Something you fight attacks Sunny by shoving him, on the stairs, and the first skill Sunny learns is "Calm down." If he had just calmed down instead of getting angrier, things would have been fine. The violin could have been replaced. His feelings of low self esteem and fear of failure could have been improved.

Spoilers about Aubrey, maybe... One thing about Aubrey that was not mentioned is that she grew up in a bad household with neglectful parents and (implied) poverty, at some point during the "time skip", her father leaves and when you arrive at her house in the present day, you will see her mother just watching TV while the house is filthy with trash and beer bottles tossed around. This lack of a family base, the death of Mary, Hero leaving for college and the absense of Kel and Sunny really puts things into perspective as to why she turned out that way.
@ApexGale3 жыл бұрын
It's not just filthy, it's literally falling apart. Aubrey's room has holes in the wall and the ceiling, I'd assume during the harsher seasons she gets hit with winter cold and even rain. Given that she fixes that old man's dripping pipe, it's likely that Aubrey has been taking care of herself for the last few years. She probably works part time to afford food and other things for herself, since her mother clearly doesn't. The characters also say that she hangs out with a bad crowd, but the more you interact with them the more you realize this is an unfounded accusation. Angel is a kid, Charlie is a quiet teen who doesn't want any trouble, Mikhael is a dork who watches too much Dragon Ball, Van is just a candy obsessed young adult and Kim is a headstrong and brash young woman. If you lose the fight versus Kim and Vance, she tells you where Aubrey is anyway because she *knows* Aubrey needs her old friends back in her life so she can heal and find closure. The worst that the kids even do is shoplift some candy and call Basil names, the latter which only took off after they saw Aubrey doing it. And Aubrey being angry at Basil is warranted through her POV, she's the one who introduced him to their friend group and he seemingly tried to destroy their memories. It's a moment where she felt like her trust and emotions had been violently betrayed. Apart from that, the kids are just...normal kids. Rambunctious, rowdy, but otherwise a regular group of teens + 1 child just hanging out. The game tricks you into thinking they're bad just like it tricks you into thinking Aubrey has actually changed. When in reality she's still the same emotionally driven girl who loves her friends. She just tries to keep a lid on her feelings much more, but as we see in day 2 they'll find a way out.

Spoiler: As far as I remember here is a short section in a library like room where you can read books with some stories. One of them is about a kid that wants to play with his friends rather than practicing playing the violin and wishes it was just gone. That story is likely about Sunny and his frustration having to practice all the time. The day Mari died was also the day where both would play infront an audience, but Sunny's frustration likely vented from the pressure and he threw the violin down the stairs. Since Mari was berating him for that and he still being in that state of anger and frustration, he pushed her off, just like how Aubrey accidently pushed Basil in the lake out of frustration.

24:53 I love that sharp piano tune as we see Sunny pushing. That said, there are a couple key pieces that we could see that lead to us finding out what happened. We see a broken violin at the bottom of the stairs, indicating that Sunny threw it down in a fit of anger. His sister was a perfectionist, always trying to be the best at everything. I think you can even see a couple of photos of Mari practicing the piano only to insist that she isn't good enough for her friends. Mari takes great pride in her perfection, and judging by some unused data, seems to show that Sunny was being pushed by Mari to be just as perfect as she wants him to be. He couldn't take it and snapped, leading to the violin being tossed down. Mari gets angry at Sunny and demands an explanation since she and her friends chipped in and all used their money to buy it. BIG SPOILER FOR THOSE THAT WANT SOMETHING TO CRY ABOUT: So if you go into Basil's grandmother's room and interact with the flower, the flower means I will follow you into your dream. I always thought it was weird that they had a cutscene related to the flower instead of just explaining it through text. That is until later on in the game. When you go back into the dream world on the third day, aka the day you fight your fear of drowning, explore the water area leading to the deep well. At the bridge, there should be a ladder that you can climb to get back into the water. if you go off and explore that area, will find a small island with a old lady asking for help finding her grandson. I believe that Basil grandmother used the last of her strength to try and talk to Basil in the dream world and stop him from harming himself. However, since basil is gone and she's trapped on the island she con only asks Omori for help when he comes by. It hurts when u think about it.

Something that might be minor or might also be intentional as well. In the Dream World, Mari's picnics are where your heal spots are. In the Real World, there are no heal spots, Mari's not around to save you anymore. I always found those sections stressful because every hit point lost is permanent damage (aside from healing items, which aren't cheap) that you have to carry with you until the section is over. From a gamer perspective, I can understand why Sunny shut himself in if the one soothing presence in his life was no longer there.

My favorite part was at the end when you could go to Mari's grave together with Kel, Aubrey and Hero. It's interesting to hear their thoughts about how they feel and that they still suffer and have to process her death, especially Hero. Which makes the Neutral ending of seeing Basil dead even sadder, since Hero is the one who's text changes to the distorted and stressed font. He's trying so hard to stay strong for Sunny and the others but he's going through a whole mental breakdown right in that moment, it's so awful and real. Haven't played the Hikkikomori route yet, but already put 30 hours into the game and can't wait to explore the dark side.

SPOILERS: The reason why they had an argument is because sunny hated playing the same song over and over again. He would always fall behind and but Mari would keep telling him to try again causing the argument. Sunny tried running away down the stairs but Mari blocked him, causing him to push her down the stairs.
@Dhalin3 жыл бұрын
Didn't Sunny throw the violin in a fit of rage and that's what caused the actual end of the fight, Mari gets in his face and he shoves her away and she winds up falling down the stairs and landing ontop of the already broken violin? I don't think Sunny actually shoved her down the stairs on purpose, it sounds like Sunny was just trying to push her back away from him. It sounds like the fact he threw such a precious instrument down the stairs and broke it set her off and the shove was just a defensive thing when she got angry over it, it probably shocked Sunny but he didn't mean to push her down the stairs and sure as hell didn't mean to _kill_ her but Sunny still viewed the whole thing as it being his fault. EDIT: I got that info from a post somewheres that contained cut dialogue that was supposed to be in the photo album (like the other photo albums had).

The worst part is. That, That is most likely not depression.. It's ptsd, and I can't believe I only peaced it together now after it was said that Sunny had a knife. Having a tramatic event occur, Feeling unsafe in the world so you carry a weapon and go out less. Escaping into your own fantasies. He has an extreme case of PTSD, suicidal tendencies, and most likely BPD of one of the endings is anything to go off of... And realizing this made it hit a lot harder for me. Idk, I'm just spitballing I guess. There is no way of actually knowing after all
@KikiSummers93 жыл бұрын
I agree that PTSD is probably the better word and it applies to every character. For Sunny in particular, it's Guilt causing PTSD manifesting via Depression. The exact cause of everyone's mechanisms is a specific, traumatic death of a loved one. For two characters, it's MANSLAUGHTER and the guilt over covering it up. Sunny isn't depressed because his brain's not making those sweet chemicals. He KILLED someone, albeit accidentally, and covered it up with Basil's help. It's up there with Silent Hill 2. Depression is what follows, yes, but it's entirely based on the guilt that Sunny is only able to really work through because of how young he was and how unintentional the incident was.

This game hit me harder than any game has in a long time. I think the only RPG Maker game to hit me harder is a game called Hello Charlotte, which I think you would also be interested in since it has a very surreal and strange tone to it (especially at the beginning) and a lot of the plot comes from interpretation or what you read between the lines (the last episode of three introduces some clearer stuff, but it doesn't fully explain everything that happened before it).

this video and game made me feel things i really wasnt expected, and oh god did it come unexpected. As someone who has gone through a period of my life, and experienced a phase very similar to that of the character. It really stopped me in my tracks. I was listening to this in the backround, and by the end i was just frozen with tears. i really love this games message, because its the realist interpretation of what ive seen of what ive experienced yet. Nothing was more on point, then looking into a mirror and just, not even being sure who your looking at is even you, that alienation to oneself and personification, that was the strongest part of the fight for me. even as someone whos been able to beat the thing plaguing me, this just kinda really impacted me still, aswell it made my mind clear to a lot of what i experienced. even now as of writing this im still a bit euphoric. This game is just amazing to communicate a story to those who play to enjoy, and to wake up those who are in their own hell when it comes to things, its message is powerful and will definitely be one to help a few in a similar situation.
