Hey, I'm one of the guys who actually worked on this thing (I'm Meowskivich, specifically). This was a pretty good video about the game. Man, takes me back. This game originally came out, like, 2008 or 2009. It was a really long time ago, and I came in as part of the team for version 1.3 I believe, doing hundreds o' hours of beta testing for the creator. Eventually I even helped with some of the graphics (Sparks attack, one of battle backgrounds, a certain secret minigame). To respond to a couple things, this game used to only be old game midis used for everything, but the "hit" tracks you mentioned were done for this version by one of the artists that did some remixes of Earthbound music for the Rock Candy albums you may or may not have heard of. He's a super talented artist, as I'm sure you can tell. Diagonal movement was something I brought up to the creator when I first played 1.2 years back, and eventually the creator DID learn how to implement it into the game, but to put that into the game would have broken it horribly, if I recall, since it would make placing walls a lot more difficult and thus increasing time it would have to spend in testing (I was a very avid wall-hugger to make sure the game worked). However, the creator added in diagonal movement for the spaceship since space was such an open space to begin with and wouldn't interfere with anything. Sadly, I haven't heard from the creator of this game in years, but I have passed the video onto them, so hopefully they'll see it some time. There are several endings to achieve, as well as unique forms for bosses in the hard mode, so there's definitely plenty of content. Cheers! -Meowskivich

Ultimately, the fact that no can pronounce Giegue's name really sells his alien nature. I won't pretend that I can, but, I did find something interesting while perusing my Funk and Wagnall's Dictionary. While in the J section, I saw an alternate archaic spelling of the word Jig (which refers to a 'lively, springy, irregular dance for one or more persons, often in triple meter'): Giegue. This got my theory brain all fired up, because it made think, "Hold on; music and various musical concepts such as leitmotifs and melodies play an important role in the games. You need to collect the 8 Melodies in the first two games, which were basically part of the lullaby Mary sung to the infant Giegue while she and her husband George were trapped on Giegue's homeworld, and were needed to make him hesitate (at least in the first game; in the second game, he's too far-gone, having used the Devil Machine to boost his psionic powers to unfathomable levels, destroying his sanity in the process, making the melodies no longer enough to stop him, requiring that the characters pray). In Mother 3, you interact with the Magypsies who are named after the Seven Modes of the Major Scale in Music Theory (Aeolian, Ionian, Locrian, Lydian, Mixolydian, and Phrygian). Perhaps, going as far back as Beginnings, Shigesato Itoi planned for the series to have a strong musical symbolism, and he ingrained this into the character names at one point, but decided against it before the final product was released, and only left a few refrences to music once he shifted the themes from music to world affairs, ecological issues, and the earth being a kind of "Mother" to all of humanity (I mean, the title of the entire series was derived from a John Lennon song name, for Christ's sake!). So, and again, I wish to re-emphasize that it may not be a solid theory, but it is something to consider at the very least that Giegue's name is pronounced "Jig," as a reference to the dance. Regardless of whether you disbelieve or believe, I just wanted to share this theory. Thank you.

Actually, I think it's theoretically _possible,_ because Otherhand (lead _CogDis_ developer) mentioned trying to implement it but having to scrap it because it was either too buggy or it made the game lag too much (I forgot which). It did work in space, though (the ship has an upgrade called the Diagonal Thrusters that lets you move in eight directions).
@HEHEHE_I_AM_A_MASKED_WARRIA6 жыл бұрын
Okey, I know the reason now (shoutouts to Crav): enabling diagonal movement broke the caterpillar script (that's what lets @everyone follow the party leader in the overworld) and certain events could be bypassed entirely by diagonally moving through the tiles that trigger them. They were able to get away with it in space because there aren't any of that type of event on the space map.

That's me at 6:50 !) thanks so much for reviewing it! (Quick thing - running and diagonal movement are both nearly impossible in RPGmaker 2003. It's possible sure, but you can only really polish it for smaller titles and a game of this scale would require so much more bugtesting than was already needed. You can't implement scripts in 2k3, so it would have had to have been done entirely in eventing which is a NIGHTMARE. I don't fault you for not knowing this, though, only devs really know it.)

Am I the only one who found Earthbound Zero’s story better than Earthbound’s? I mean neither is anything mind blowing, but I like how they tied Giygas into Ninten’s family history, the more solidified (if poorly done) relationship between Ninten and Ana, and the character development that both Lloyd and Teddy get. It makes me like them a bit more than Earthbound, which for all its improvements had (in my opinion) flatter character motivations outside of Porky. Then again I’ve been told before that I like Earthbound Zero more than is healthy sooooo...
@C-Fipp6 жыл бұрын
I actually agree. To me, EarthBound is to the Mother series like Stardust Crusaders is to JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: A lot of different things happen in the story, but only the ending is really relevant to the overall plot and the journey leading up to it feels very linear. And EarthBound's party members really are underdeveloped, at least Loid befriended Ninten, like Kakyoin with Jotaro, and Teddy had his personal motivations, same with Polnareff, but Paula, Jeff and Poo only join Ness because "it's their destiny", which I always found a bit lazy. I think what makes EarthBound Zero's story better is that every main character has at least some character development, even Giegue, the melodies you've collected on your journey directly affect him, instead of just making the main character more fit to fight him. The game is also a lot less linear, which I think makes it feel more realistic.
@agnusgloria11226 жыл бұрын
If you think about Giygas's story from mother 1 makes sense for the game being called mother, Mother made you feel sympathy for the villain, he was the main character! Most of the story was built around him and his adoptive parents Maria and George and his relation towards them!! It's his story, which is where the name mother comes! Based on a Bon Jovi song about about someone has a bad relationship with their mother and suggestively the rest of their family, literally Giegue!!! His mother Maria is the one who introduced emotions to him which he eventually removes but then has them flooding back in when he hears his mother's song the eight melodies which means his love for him is what hurts him! George is someone who stole the secret to Psychokinesis which is what makes him invade earth, lose his emotions and eventually become Giygas (Though Itoi wasn't thinking about that at the time but its still another problem for Giegue)! Ninten eventually fights him and instead of joining him which would give him one last chance to reconnect himself with his emotions and his family but turns him down for the sake of humanity! And he becomes the arch enemy of the human race, the same race which taught him love and which he loves! It's an emotional tale on a galactic scale! Which is the why the game is called mother. It's about an alien who loves his mother, a song which taught him how to love and how it not only tore his life apart but also tore his existence apart. It's truly sad. And that's why its called mother, because the game tells a story very much akin to the Bon Jovi song, Mother.

13:14 I can answer that. I did an interview with otherhand not long ago and they shed some light on some things I had eating at me during my play through. So early on when the game first came out, CogDis was nearly a completely different game than the final, more complete 2.0 version you played here. The sprites were really crude and the music was “I don’t know how to do music, can someone make me some?” which lead to a fellow named BlueStone and maybe one other to make some quick MIDI tracks. Some music was tossing a dart at a wall to see what stuck. The Zelda II track, among others, most notably Thunderton and Cloudvale (which were originally by a group called Eels), were MIDI sequences of pre-existing music. Also the first cutscene music from Turok 2 was resequenced for the early build as well. Think of these tracks as place holders for when the rebuild/redesign of 2.0 was to start. Some got replaced entirely, revamped, or maybe left in as an easter egg, like the Zelda II house music as you pointed out. If I was the creator of a fan game that knew programming but did not know how to create music, I probably would have done the same thing. “Hey, I know people that make music, so I will ask them to send me some neat tunes for my project”.

THANK you I finished Earthbound Beginnings (the GBA fantranslation though) last week and I'm halfway through replaying Earthbound, I really liked the story of the first game and I'm glad they expand on it even if it's a fangame, I was kinda left wanting to know more about Giegue, George and Maria. As always a very nice, wholesome and comfy review

Just finished the game with the severance ending, cried a lil’ bit at credits cuz I didn’t want the game to be over but at least I got Larice and co up to about lvl 80
@rowquerpaz82653 жыл бұрын
The first ending that I got was the Normal/Bad Ending. Later the Joke Ending, the Severance Ending and the Good Ending. I couldn't get the Paradox Ending because I used all the Knowledge Stones on the main 4 team members, instead of saving one for Niiue. Maybe when I play it from the beginning on Hard Mode.

nice job meiling! levelling larice and co to level 80, is pretty damn hard! it's also amazing how this fangame can almost evoke the same amount of emotion as large games like persona 4 or earthbound itself.
@hongmeiling82193 жыл бұрын
@@Niiue Exactly. Some of the game hurts, like the ending where the gang is simply just not remembered, but that they have each other regardless, or the fact that we know what buzz buzz’s fate is, or being forced to fight Larice, or even just sadness that it ends. Can’t fake that emotion, that makes it great.

I'm glad to know that somebody has done a review of this game, and really hits all the major points of its pros and cons. I honestly really liked most of the game, having played it before seeing this review, although as you said, it can be kind of grindy at times, especially if you miss one of the sanctuaries before chapter 7, as they will wreck you if you try to redo them as soon as you are able to revisit them. I will say however, one of my favorite fights in the game is Snow and Blaze, who have a central gimmick that is honestly something I don't think I've ever seen done in a game before, certainly never in an RPG.

Col Saturn isn't just a support character in that his weapon does physical damage. Its registered differently than Larice/Zarbols "Beam" damage, so effects enemies differently and he has higher attack power than Alivinar. Also more dual hit weapons than others. I say this because a few times I was really surprised how fast using Col Saturn as a attacker sped things along.

It's not too often you get a fangame or hack that's completely ambitious from top to bottom. Yea, some of them do things a bit differently than usual, but it's usually minor or just a neat little concept. Here? We have different endings, a handful of sidequests that incorporate into said endings, a lengthy period, and actually some level of believable discussion about what would've happened between Mother 1 and Earthbound, that's pretty out there for a simple passion project. The only other fangames I know about that reach this level of ambitious endeavors are Mario & Luigi Starlite Worlds, Pokemon Sage, and maybe the likes of Fallout 1.5. And maybe Mother 4 or whatever they decided to call that game now but..... well, most of us know what's happening with that game.

I loved this game. It was probably my favorite fan game that makes everything so believable, that I consider it canon. Like what the HECK was the Apple of Enlightenment before this game? That was probably the dumbest, out of place plot point in Earthbound. Think about it, you get told about it literally two times throughout the game, but you get NO context about it whatsoever for this thing that drove Ness and Porky, it felt like a dropped important plot point they forgot to remove. CogDis made it into a full fleshed out thing. Heck, even the weird "XX" motif from Mother 1 carried on here. The plot is so well done, they take into account of everything happening across not the first two, but all three games. Like you mentioned, the bosses are also different depending on the order you fight them, which was *not necessary* at all, but they did it. My favorite change is if you fight the twin guardians last. They're pretty easy, because they *actively fight each other* and try to kill each other during the battle. If they're last, though, they put their differences aside and face you full force. Major gripes I had were the somewhat slow speed and inconsistent music quality, due to some of the music being pulled from the old version/different artists. But overall, it's a huge game with a very believable plot, multiple endings, and a heckton of obscure secrets and completionist goals. Seriously, they brought something over from a random Earthbound fan thing revolving around Fobbies and the color "borange". I highly recommend anyone trying out this game. Speaking of which, Nitro, how much did you get through the game? There's plenty of random, huge secrets that are easily missable, like the secret gems and base.

@Nitro Rad: Walking diagonally in RPGmaker games is possible but also has the potential to glitch out if its not handled properly. The progress of walking diagonally is handled by "common events" which do move the player. They do no actually move all by themselves and are therefore able to skip other events which would otherwise activate when touched by the player.

I'm really happy I came across this video! CogDis might just be my favorite fangame of all time. I remember discovering the 2.0 release being advertised in 2014 and as soon as it was released, I downloaded it and played it to completion and got the best ending. I really loved my time with it. But what REALLY made this game special to me was that after completing it, I got on Starmen.net and posted in the games thread a bit. The creator of the game was looking for people to make illustrations for the games soundtrack, something I hopped on pretty quickly. I believe I ended up producing around 13 pieces of artwork for the game, I felt that passionate about this game. My only regret is that I wasn't nearly as good at art back then as I am today, but it was a wonderful time illustrating some of the songs, something I don't think I'll ever forget. As I talked to some of the people involved with creating this game, it really seems like this started out as a wobbly, haphazardly put together project by fans with little to no experience in making games. You can definitly tell that they got better at it as the game progresses. I think there's something admirable about that.

Cognitive Dissonance: Between Two Times for me was a neat and interesting perspective of telling good connections and fine storyline to fill the gaps between MOTHER 1 and 2. I actually liked their vision of Giygas and its descent to madness (I still don't approve the name change canon of Giegue to Giygas since in Japan it's Gyiyg in both games, and it should stay on a relevant name (Giygas)), the focus on the alien characters and their perspective regarding the foundation of both invasions and their species, the expansion of the century year old backstory of George and Maria, and other stuff I don't want to spoil for people who haven't experienced it. I'm currently writing my own MOTHER novel narrative (in a style of a game script), which takes place between 2 and 3, but instead of a predictable storyline of how the Apocalypse came to be, instead my goal is to write an original story focusing on the unique group of characters and focus on their problems, dilemmas and situations that revolve around them, on their journey, paths and the decisions they take to overcome the insecurities of their current situation and save the world and future of their living time. It still also focuses on the connection of all 3 official games (An expanded view of the World of Mother 2 but with a more focused developed modern present look (202X), redemption and proper closure to the original lore of Mother 1. and the development of important pieces and subtle risings to things that were unexplained in Mother 3). CogDis obviously is not canon, even for my story, but I still want to give subtle mention and inspiration to it's ideas, because for me it's dedication are things that inspire, involving some of their deep themes (in fact, one of the main themes of my story is somewhat inspired by the definition of Cognitive Dissonance), ideas of other character's perspectives (like the aliens' points of view and redemption), etc.

there’s a secret boss that is sTuPiD hard, like the final boss is probably 3/4th the difficulty of this secret boss. and the final boss is pretty hard. i recommend attempting him on chapter 7 as he is an instant loss if you are under level 40. upcoming secret boss info: the boss, fobyiyg, is TWO different entities. the swirl and the actual fobby. the swirl has multiple attacks, inexplicable jolt (130~ damage on one target) and incomprehensible zap (230~ damage on one target). the fobby has the aforementioned attacks, unnatural wave (260~ damage on all targets), brain cyclone (i forgot the name) (inflicts MULTIPLE statuses on all targets, including insane, which is BAD) and disintegrator (100~ damage and chance of K.O on one target). he has a ridiculous amount of HP so you’e going to be there for a while. the fobby can also summon another swirl if the big swirl was killed (albeit weaker in terms of HP) and summon 4 mini swirls at the later stages. kill the mini swirls as fast as you can. the replacement swirl has the previous attacks of the previous swirl and the mini swirls have the previous attacks AND disintegrator. the mini swirls have 900 hp. if you’re around level 50, this battle is ROUGH. i recommend getting larice fire omega from venus and beam omega from giegue’s old mothership (i didn’t get beam omega). fire is good for the mini swirls and star storm is for fobyiyg and his big swirl. recommended things you should do alivinar - get him lifeup omega from mercury and healing omega for insane and K.O. make him focus on healing and use his super combo if you don’t need to heal col. saturn - get mayhem shotgun from giegue’s old mothership. helps with the mini swirls and the actual damage itself. use quicken omega whenever possible and pk ground is a solid damage dealer. larice - spam fire omega for the mini swirls and beam omega for the actual boss. if you don’t have beam omega from giegue’s old mothership use starstorm. if you have no pp use magnet omega. zarbol - get the coral reef body as it deflects alot of statuses. keep him on reflect duty to guard against unnatural wave and brain cyclone (forgot the name) and keep alivinar alive. general - bring cups of life noodles for this fight, you will need it. bring PP restoring items too in case alivinar runs out of PP. general tips - * this fight is LONG. if you grinded to 55 like i did, you’ll be there for about 30 minutes. * if anyone is insane or dead, use healing omega or cups of life noodles * pk harmony is decent if everyone is at low hp but lifeup omega should do the trick most of the time. * reflect is crucial for defending against brain cyclone (again, forgot the name) and unnatural wave. * fighting him below level 50 is not recommended as it is a party wipe. for a higher chance of victory, grind to level 58 or 63. * do not be afraid to expend items! this is probably the hardest battle in the game and it’s reward is incredible. rewards of the battle: borange ray description: “Powered by markers and sweet tea” info: the borange ray can be equipped on anyone. it attacks twice and hits all enemies and always goes first. high damage (around 500~ at level 55) and inflicts statuses (?). probably the best weapon in the game.

The whole Giegue-pronunciation issue is even lampshades in-game, you fight little abstract versions for him called "Geeg". Going off this, I think they went with "geeg-ooh-way" or "geeg-ooh" as this game's pronunciation. On that note, I believe "Knee-ooh-way/Knee-ooh" is how Niiue is said. Emphasis on the Ni part. You know what that means in Japanese? That's right, it's (censored for plot reasons)! At least, that's my interpretation.

Not a big deal but I thought I'd share. Since Japanese is really easy to synthesize I decided to throw the original name, ギーグ, into Google translate. The pronunciation it gave me was something between gee-goo and gee-guh. Giygas actually has the same name in the Japanese Mother and Mother 2. Also ギーグ translated to concert though I'd doubt that actually means anything.
@whichcache25175 жыл бұрын
Considering the fact that Giegue in Mother 1 is defeated by the protagonists of the game singing the 8 Melodies, I'd say his name meaning "concert" makes a lot of sense.
@ElectricBarrier4 жыл бұрын
Oh, I get it now. It all makes sense. His name is an english loanword, which japanese has a lot of. It's the english word "gig" as in "hey guys, I booked us a gig", and is used to refer to a concert held by a rock band. The romanzation "giegue" and "gyigg" makes sense, and so goes "giygas" which is supposedly pronounced "gee-guh". In japan, it's either that which is already a foreign word so it sounds "alien", or the aforementioned "gyigg" which would be pronounced the same but is spelled like some alien's name. The english editions of the games lose the meaning of the name but keep it's "alien" sound. So basically, giegue/gyigg/giygas' name is really just "gig" but through a combination of localization mistakes and/or attempts to make it sound like a real name, we ended up with all of this stuff and only japanese players could tell.
