Jeremy, I used to work at Green Filter. They made a filter for the Ford Lightning that had extra "bracing" in it to prevent sucking shut like happened to you. All it really was is extra seam (that holds the pleats together where it meets) placed 180 and 90 degrees from the main seam. You may need to do something like that if you are going to stick with a longer filter.
