@@Danzaxe69 someone mentioned in these comments that they had the same issue so they were making it a point to focus on external visual details more and then closing their eyes and practice visualizing what they were just focusing on. I think this exercise will work well. It's like anything else, it takes practice.

Thanks so much, Damon, this is a truly wonderful teaching.❤As I think I'm more auditory generally, but potentially equally visual (I remember being so as a youngster), it seems to me that to cultivate my visual, a good place to start is with our external experience, as that's where I believe it all originates. So, in the effort to cultivate my inner visual (or rediscover it), I've been paying attention to visual submodalities in my external environment, silently noticing shapes, colors, hues, textures, etc. And then revisioning them later with my memory (and "distortion processes") internally. Keeping it vague, but it's been really fun and very helpful in cultivating my inner eye. I've begun working on the image of my "ideal self."

By wrong meaning it's not an actual swish if you're swishing one behavior to another or one state to another. That's chaining. A Swish is distinct in that you're overriding behavior using the higher logical level of identity. If you're not doing that, it's not a Swish. The difference is that your identity goes wherever you go in time and space, which makes it work no matter where you go and no matter when. That's not true for behavior. Behavior can only be useful in the right context and later in life you can no longer do certain behaviors.

Biting my nails has always been a norm for me. After I have to dip my fingers in flour because for some reason it helps heal the fingers faster. And I wonder why I bite them in the first place.

First identify what you see that triggers you to break your rules and Swish that image away as you replace it with an image of your ideal self. You can swish to something specific like following your rules, but what does that look like and does it stay the same? Probably not. This is why you want to swish an ideal image of yourself not doing any particular behavior and without context. This way you'll have the flexibility to stick to your rules and ideal self no matter the situation. When you swish to a particular behavior, you're only limiting yourself to being able to do that particular behavior. If the situation doesn't line up for that exact behavior, it won't work.

Learnt a lot here, thank you. Question - if someone reacts to stress by smoking and we want to stop the smoking, I am not sure what the associated image should be. The trigger is the feeling of stress/anxiety which is triggering the smoking (response). So should the associated image be reaching out to the cigarette, as opposed to using a kinasthetic swish instead that considers the stress/anxiety?

Stress and anxiety are evaluative kinesthetic meaning you feel stress and anxiety when you see, hear, or touch something that you evaluate as something to be stressed and anxious about. You can't swish the evaluation. You have to swish the stimulus. Compulsion to do something you don't want to do like smoking is also an evaluative feeling. When you discover what stimulus causes the feeling of compulsion that's what you swish. It will be something you see, hear, or touch and that can be internally in your mind or something external you see, hear, or touch. The first place I would go with what you're asking is what happens between stress and anxiety that turns into compulsion to smoke? It will likely be an image the person sees in their mind so that would be the image to swish. For some it could be a sound like an internal voice. Rarely is it a touch (kinesthetic).

@@DamonCart curious could it be a feeling? I ask because I only have blackness when I close my eyes and when I get the compulsion it’s a feeling I get that I need to smoke, right now. Only way I can describe it is I can feel the images….. 1 other questions could it be done if I touch a lighter or is it beyond the compulsion at that point?

@@jennlong7123 an emotional or evaluative feeling is always the result of evaluating some sort of representation that is coded in one of the five senses. The trigger is unconscious so you need to become consciously aware of what is triggering the compulsion. It's not always a visual. For example, when I feel hunger in my stomach (kinesthetic perceptual feeling) I think to myself "I'm hungry. I need to eat" (kinesthetic evaluative). You need to find what is triggering you to feel compelled to have a cigarette. It's most likely a visual representation but it could also be a sound (auditory representation) or touching something (kinesthetic perceptual). You can swish in any one of the senses but visual is most common. Regarding touching a lighter, why are you touching the lighter to begin with? If it's because you want to smoke, the compulsion is already happening. If you're touching a lighter in order to light your stove and suddenly you feel like having a cigarette, it's probably from touching the lighter.

Could you please give me a word or two on the differences between associated and disassociated? Do you have a video on it? Reading? Associated is when you think of a memory and you're in it, point of view perspective as if you're reliving it. Disassociated means when you see yourself in a memory like you're watching a movie of yourself. You can also be associated and disassociated in the present. If you're very present, you feel like you're in your body. If you feel disconnected it's usually because you're disassociated, thinking of yourself as if you are outside of yourself.

What if that anger (secondary emotion) was covering up/driven by his fears or shame (primary emotion). How does therapy process may change. Would we not need to do swish on fear or shame.

Fear and shame are quite different. We can usually swish for fear, but shame is usually about a deep rooted belief about one's self. So the approach to shame would be different.

For example one person Everytime he is going outside he gets a psychical response in his body and also he cannot handle any stressful situation or anything that needs his complete attention and got psychical response? I've never really been able to understand when people say about images of experiences being big/small, off to the keft/right, colourful or bland, are there lots of images or only one? , and "move them to the left and make them bigger and more colourful - now how do you feel?" Erm...what?....nothing different? They're just images. I just don't see it. Read the book 'Transforming yourself ' but what put me off is that all the participants seems to be practitioners, and already know what ge was talking about. I must be missing something. Most of memories of experience are in the middle, between my eyes, average size, and just normal colour. What gives? Am I just stupid?

Thanks for the video. I have a question. If the stimulus is not only visual but appeal to the other senses (in my case, smell and touch) should the ideal image also contain these elements?? Like, I have a bad habit that is being triggered usually when I go to bed at the end of the day. The stimulus is not only the image of bed, but also the smell of the pillow, the way my skin touches the bedsheets, etc. So what should my ideal image be?

It seems like you're confusing the instructions for the ideal image and the compulsion image. The ideal image is disassociated, meaning you see yourself rather than experiencing it point of view as if you're living it. When you use smell and touch, you're usually associated. It's hard to access touch and smell from a disassociated image. For the ideal image, just see an image of yourself from head to shoulders in no particular context and doing no particular behavior. Make the ideal image an image that just lets you know this is your ideal self who has solved all of your problems. This might take a bit of work but it's definitely worth it. For the compulsion or trigger image, you should be associated. When you feel compelled toward something like food you're not supposed to eat for example, you're usually associated. If adding smell and touch to this image helps you feel associated before swishing this image down and replacing it with your ideal self image, that will probably work quite well. That added stimulus will prepare you for when you're actually in a real situation and it will trigger your ideal self image to interrupt the compulsion pattern.

A NLP technique is a way of doing something within a process to get a desired response. For example, the Swish pattern uses the technique of submodalities to move images around in your mind. Techniques occur within a process. The Swish Pattern is a process that contains techniques. NLP is a model for how we create experiences. A model can contain techniques (like submodalities and perceptual positions) and processes (like the Swish Pattern and Mapping Across). NLP is a model for creating models. We model successful people and from that we create a model for creating the kind of life experiences we want to experience.

Would this work for someone with social anxiety? Getting them to see themselves being able to just walk up to people and talk without dealing with anxiety.

It certainly won't hurt to try it. There are no harmful side-effects. When they're imagining their ideal self though, the self that no longer has anxiety and can approach anyone, that image needs to be in no context. In other words, don't have them see their ideal image walking up to people. It needs to be without context.

Hey, I have another question. I did a swish pattern on my addiction about 8 days ago. And it worked quite well, but unfortunately I relapsed today. So should I do a swish pattern again now (so always do it every time I relapse to reinforce the new pattern)?

Addiction is tricky because there's a lot going on. I'm not surprised that it didn't work. First, it's great that you're aware that you have an addiction and you're working on it. Second, you need to get to the positive attention of your addiction. What is it trying to fulfill for you? Third, you need to find other options that are healthy that you can do to fulfill the intention so that you don't need the unhealthy habit or substance anymore. Fourth, satisfy any objections to using other options. Fifth, future pace. This is easier said than done, but this is it in a nutshell.

I would leave the Swish pattern as it is without modifying it. What you're asking about can be found in the NLP Well Formed Outcome. You can simply ask that question any time you aspire to achieve something and you can ask it at the end of the Swish Pattern. If you really want to take this into the stratosphere, dump the carrot and the stick model altogether and become your highest values rather than chasing after things that you think will give you value; that's where true personal development flourishes.

You mean Secondary Gain? When you check congruence, if there is a secondary gain, it will come up in the form of resistance. Whether the resistance is secondary gain or something else, it doesn't matter. The resistance needs to be acknowledged and integrated.
