No. 127 Witches: what do we do if we feel paralysed by depression?

This little talk (complete with Archie snoring and - briefly - with him having a nightmare under the table) is a response to a listener's question. What do we do if we feel so paralysed by depression that we cannot do the usual things we used to do e.g. ritual, spells etc., any more. Do we 'fake it until we make it'? Or what?
Here Tylluan offers a few thoughts and ideas about ways we can still try (and it will be difficult) and do a few small things on our path, things that are also part of our daily life so they will not put too much strain on us.
If you would like to know more about Tylluan's work and her writing please visit:
www.thewolfenhowlepress.com
You will find that you can read the first chapter of many of her books by clicking on the covers for free.
For example, Knot Magic can be read here: thewolfenhowlep....
(Just click on the cover)
There are plenty of suggests for celebrations in Staying on the Old Track, too, which you can find on the website.
Her books can be bought as very reasonably priced paperbacks from www.thewolfenhowlepress.com and also as modestly priced e-books from your local Amazon Kindle store.
(Do please avoid sites that claim to offer these downloads or ebooks or pdf's for free - they are pirating i.e. stealing her books and you really have no idea what you are getting.)

Thank you for this... I've been suffering from depression for years. This is the best and most compassionate advice I have ever received. People don't understand faking it doesn't work or changing little things don't work. And I've found lots of people who tell me not to take meds. I do struggle with taking them, but I know they are important. This is wonderful wisdom and I greatly appreciate it. I will try to start incorporating this into my offering and path.

yes, depression can be very paralyzing in every aspect of your life. your right, don't fake it because, in the end you'll be disappointed with your self , then become even more depressed. there are days when I'm just happy because I had the strength to get up and make coffee , that was it for the day.

Wise words I actually found my path when I was suffering from depression becoming a more spiritual person was the way forward for me and you are so right, just something small when that is all you can do is still doing something, moving forward to fighting your way out of it.

Thank you - we often overlook the small things even when we feel well. When someone has depression then even these can often seem beyond them. I do hope you are feeling much better now and that your path ahead is full of blessings, Tylluan :-)

Depression has no face…. It can happen to anyone, any time. Often described as one of life’s most challenging experiences. It can become an endless tunnel of despair, or a desolate landscape…. It is the executioner of happiness and life. I love what you had to say because it’s about small steps, and small accomplishments.

I want to deeply thank you for your compassion and understanding. I have been binging your videos for a week or so now, and while I'm loving all of them so far, this one really hit me. I have struggled with depressive episodes throughout my life. I'm happy to say that it's slowly getting better. Episodes are shorter, and with much more time between. (Excluding most of 2020, of course.) But still, I get fearful of my next episode, or worried for others who may not have such a great support system as I do. Your message here is perfectly on point of what I needed to hear. So, truly, thank you so much for your wisdom and kindness, and taking the time to share it with others. To anyone else who may be struggling right now: Please remember to hydrate and your medication. Take it all one day at a time.

As a witch that has a degree in Psychology what you say is good advice. One should love themselves for what they can do and not dwell on what they can't. Any love that you show yourself is an offering to deity. Much love and bright blessings, Aistir

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my question. I am very happy to say that I am indeed on meds now and they seem to be doing the trick. The past three days have been the best I've had in a very long time, and while I still feel lacking in motivation to do formal ritual, I do try to see everything I do as an offering and everything I have as a blessing. It really does help once you stop punishing yourself for not succeeding the way you think you ought to be. I hope everybody else who suffers from this dreadful condition finds the light within themselves. Thank you again. Blessed be. :)

Such an important topic. I am one of those people who lives with depression, and social anxiety. It is an accepted part of who I am. After many, many years I am now finally able to share my struggle with certain family, and friends. I am blessed to have 3 outstanding physician's who are part of my care team. We really are a team, they are there for me, and have helped me identify triggers, and deal with them. I want anyone reading this to know, that you can live a very full, happy life even with these troubles. Not only that, but you will be stronger because of them. I believe it also makes you a much more compassionate person.

I think one's chances of surviving and doing well even with depression depends upon the support they have, both from family and the medical profession. And of course it also depends on how quickly support can be put in place. Often people don't admit even to themselves how ill they are, and it does make it more difficult then. But I am really glad to read your post, because it does show that it can be overcome. I hope you continue to do well, and have a very full and blessed life. Blessings, Tylluan :-)

Thank you for the kind words and sound advice, Tylluan. Depression is a mean condition, and it makes it so hard to love ourselves. Paralysing is the right word. Small tasks and chores become enormous and I've experienced frustration and self loathing for not being able to accomplish even the simplest of them. Baby steps and loads of hope are my tools when I go through the worst days. Still working on self acceptance... For me that's the hardest part.

You're very welcome, pixxa. As you say, depression is a very mean condition. But it's very important to be good to yourself, and understanding. Not many people - especially those who are unhelpful to those who have it - would have the strength to deal with it on a daily basis. I hope your path gets easier soon. Blessings, Tylluan :-)

As a new witch who struggles with mental illness, I feel down on myself a lot of the time because I feel I'm not doing enough "witchy" things or that I procrastinate on them etc etc. because of what I'm going through. Thanks for your opinion. Depression is so hard to discuss because there are so many various forms. Clinical or manic depression VS "I'm having a bad day, week or month" are SO different. Here in the states it is very misunderstood. If someone is "paralyzed by depression" I would strongly advise to seek medical advise and Witch their way through along side the advice of a professional. Blessings !

My experience tells me that nine times out of ten, if you are depressed, it's either a medical issue or a negative entity manipulating you. For example, I once had an infection that I was unaware of. It wore my body down and I became sluggish and got behind on things and it triggered depression, which lasted a good few weeks before I realized I had an infection that was out of control and got some antibiotics. As the antibiotics began to work, I began feeling a lot better and after a few days, I no longer was depressed. Nutrition could play a role as well because if you don't get adequate nutrition, your body will suffer and for some people (like me), feeling rotten for an extended period of time can trigger depression. There have also been times I realized there was a negative entity manipulating me (feeding off me) to be depressed. These entities usually didn't only use depression, they also used fear, worry, anxiety, depression, and dark thoughts. They would influence me to be more interested in dark topics which eventually led to dark thoughts, which also helped feed it. Once you realize the cause of your depression, if you can realize it, then you can do something about it to get it resolved. Not everyone is the same, but this is my experience. Another thing that helps me is to focus on the positive things in your life. There is always something positive in your life. The more positive things you focus on, the more positive your mindset will become, and the harder it will be to remain in a state of depression.

Thank you for another lovely insightful and very valid viewpoint on depression ( That snoring is the most delightful sound) I wanted to ask, could you at some point (if you havent already) help me understand why it is that some magickal healing/help work I do, works for some people, and not for others? Is this down to the powerful path of their own destiny, which magickal intention/spells can never change? Or is it about their own deep thoughts/feelings/fears about the outcome that actually works against the magickal intentions? Thank you Tylluan, bright blessings xx

Please don't jump to the conclusion that you are being hexed. It is really quite unlikely. But if you feel uncomfortable in a psychic sense, begin with cleansing and setting up shields and wards to protect yourself. Go to the doctor and make sure that your physical health is okay. That's really important. And if you already have meds to take, do make sure you're taking them. Blessings, Tylluan :-)'
