No Autism Weighted Vests?

Our boys are on the autism spectrum and they love compression, but just not weighted vests. Why? Let's discuss.

I wish I had a weighted vest during my childhood since I feel that a weighted vest would have been beneficial for me growing up since I was underweight during most of my childhood, and wearing a weighted vest can help build muscle. I am no longer underweight since I eat more than I used to and I lift weights 🐿️

Hi there my name is Lisa, I have a son Thomas who is nearing to ten. As you he’s so under weight and it drives me crazy he eats pizza, cake, and healthy food and he just doesn’t retain weight at all. Did you find out for yourself why? I’ve tried protein drinks and just can’t get him up to normal weight.

@@elizabethkusce2718 . I also lift weights in addition to eating more healthy foods and protein shakes. If I didn't also lift weights I would still be underweight. I would advise you to buy your son some weights.

I like compression a lot too but I don’t think a weighted vest would work for me either. I think when compression isn’t a full body experience such as a weighted blanket, or curling up really tight into a ball and is more relegated to just the chest area, if actually has the opposite of a calming effect and instead feels a lot like how anxiety makes me feel. Like there’s a weight on my chest and it’s hard to breathe. Alistair put it quite well! Really does feel like it squeezes my bones.

I have a weighted vest, but I don’t use it that much. I have a weighted blanket that I love so much, and I have a sensory peapod chair that applies compression. It’s like an inflatable canoe, and I love it so much. I also love hugs too.

I respect your boys choice for not like weighted vests, they gave the reason why expect for Ian. I wish my cousin Trey had one, it may of helped him stay calm in certain situations.😊😊😊

Great video! My son also doesn’t like his weighted compression vest but he loves most other compression. He actually sleeps under 3 heavy weighted blankets every night!

Another great video! Thanks for the info on weighted vests. We tried a weighted vest with our lo, and he absolutely hated it, and it seemed to escalate his behaviors. I can see how it could be beneficial to some kids on the spectrum, just not mine. On the other hand, my 5 yo, my 17 yo, and myself sleep with weighted blankets and love them! If I feel extremely stressed, I'll crawl under my weighted blanket, and it helps to ease my stress. Thanks for sharing how you feel about weighted vests. Very helpful information.

I am on the Spectrum high functioning, I use to lay down on my stomach and put my old gaming Laptop an Alienware aurora m9700 that is 9.5 pounds on my back. Life got busy seeing this reminded me of it and I may start doing it again since I still have the laptop. I just found your Channel today.

I recently tried a weighted vest to see if it would help with pressure but I didn't like it either. It didn't fit right and just felt weird. I understand why the boys didn't like it either 😕

I understand where they are coming from. I don't like anything that squeezes me. I do like to have a blanket on me but not one that is heavy. Plus I am one that doesn't like it when people hug me. I also hate getting massages because I don't like people touching me

I've never tired a weighted vest but it seems like I would be too much force on the shoulders, I always sleep with a weighted blanket but the idea of a weighted vest just seems like it would be uncomfortable on the shoulder sort of area

I know I'm a little late to respond, and this may not be seen by you. I'm assessed as but not diagnosed autistic, high functioning, like Connor. I've followed the page since October or November, and just got the confidence to write a message. Obviously weighted vests aren't their thing, I've found for me, that compression tops help when I'm anxious or stressed/in a stressful or high stimulation environment. Maybe more suited to Ian, as he's not going to grow out of them so quick as the other 2 will. It might be worth a look into.

I dont need a weighted vest but A weighted Blanket is essential for me If I dont have my weighted blanket I usually cant sleep and end up very very upset But I could try to Take them in school or something to prevent meltdowns

What about the harness? There are autistic people who keep using their harnesses for compression even when they become independent adults. I don't like wearing a weighted vest when I drive, so I use a harness.

Sensory based methods rarely make things better, but they do make things worse. I tried weighted vests and wrist bands with various children over the years and found that no matter the child or diagnosis, they did not like them. I did research to see if there was any literature on them. I found seven, all positive but all the "research" was by OTs and the standards of the research were not reliable. The same for weighted wrist bands. When using them on children with autism, I found them to be torture for the children.
