NO CO2 - Monte Carlo I 60 days Carpet Update!!

Hi folks, this is the progress of my Monte Carlo growth from December 28th 2017 till yesterday, March 3rd 2018. Up until this video, I didn't add any CO2. All the growth you see in the Vid is without CO2 injection, I was counting on the power of the light, good substrate and weekly liquid ferts. Let me know your thoughts please!

@@ShawnHineidi no problem! I just wanna ask, how do you deal with algae? Im iniecting co2 on mine as well and had a huge hair algae breakout but yours look so clean.

@@ind3n there are so many reasons that causes algae, you need to test your water to find out why your tank is not balanced which is why you have algae. when I had algae, I used to manually syphon it out almost on a daily basis. Increase your water changes as it’s the best solution to battle algae. If that doesn’t work for whatever reason, I would use use excel or hydrogen peroxide (small doses) I would also increase the plant mass as it will outcompete the algae.

Hello! Beautiful tank i have a question I’m using controsoil in my nano. And doing a carpet with marsiela, some were floating back up when planting. Is it because they were maybe too big?

yes im sure if you were using a fine soil or powder, you wont experience floating that much. however, give it some time, they will establish roots and hold. Thanks for watching!

It looks great! What substrate did you use? I just started a planted tank and while my Monte Carlo stayed planted, my Vallisneria just keeps floating to the top :/ I was hoping since you have that too you might be able to give me a hint of where I might be going wrong.

Thank you. The substrate I used was fluval stratum which i highly recommend!! no trick in keeping your plants from floating. Just replant them deep and in time, they will take hold. Thats what I do. Good luck bro.

no as you said, I am only dosing ferts and let it do it thing. I trimmed only once ever since I planted them. check out the 120 Monte Carlo updated video as I have added CO2 and the carpet went crazy!!

Question, how do you propagate Montecarlo? As in, does it create runners? Or do you have to clip and then replant it like S. Repen? I need a plant that can create runners like Dwarf Sag, but shorter in length. I am trying to figure out if this is more like Dwarf Sag or S. Repen.

thanks for your comment. Yes you will have much better and faster results with CO2 but you can still grow the carpet without it. Need good substrate and good light! its all about trial and errors! this tank was your standard 10 gallons from Petco. I dont remember the dimensions. Light was Finnex Ray 2. it was a strong light for its size.

Yes it’s totally ok to use sponge filter. You don’t really NEED co2 to grow Monte Carlo. Although It will definitely help grow thicker carpet but I grew Monte Carlo without co2. So having extra oxygen in your tank won’t affect the growth!

Find some info about ' liquid carbon' it has nothing common with C02. Thetefore I recommend to dose real C02, if not presurised then make very simple yeast reactor. Good luck

Hey bobb, thanks for your comment and for subscribing. Yes the plants/carpet will definitely grow without CO2 but in a slow mode. I have added CO2 and eversince, the carpet and plants grew faster, more color and more lush! but you will see beautiful growth without CO2 so give it a try!

Not in this tank but in others. Best way to fight algae is frequent waterchanges , control the light intensity and control the amount of nutrients in the water column. Of course getting some algae eaters helps a lot. Thanks for watching.

I am from Costa Rica, the only substrate we can find here is either "homemade" substrate or seachem flourite Black sand, do you thnk if I choose the Seachem one, my plants Will grow well? Yeah I believe you can grown plants and even the carpet with seachem. Try to use root tabs and liquid fertilizer so your plants will have enough nutrients to grow lush as they will demand more food especially while using CO2. Thank you for watching and the support bro!

Meh Meh it’s aqueon standard glass aquarium, you might find it on amazon. I used to have a 5 gallon fluval spec which was perfect for my betta. It also came with a lid and complete kit. It’s a German brand so you should have it in England.

I know this is a while back and chances are low maybe I’ll get a reply but I would really like to know how you maintain your aquarium while you are waiting for your carpet to grow? Do you vacuum the gravel anyway? Do they not come out? I was thinking of getting into the hobby but I am not sure how to get through that stage seen as it takes time for plants to grow and of there is needed a water change you need to clean the gravel also right? Filipa it's always a pleasure to answer questions. I didn't used to syphon the gravel. I had a soil base substrate and when I did my weekly water change, I used to wave my hand over the substrate to move debris off and shypon it out. Get into the hobby. You will enjoy it. My advise is to do your research first. Have fun 😉

Hey, I just saw this, I thought I have responded to your first comment long ago but I only see the like!!! anyhow, No the betta wasn't hiding from anyone. they went along very well. I know bettas are known for them aggression towards other fish but it all depends on each betta's temperament, the amount of space you give your fish and the plants for them to hide and fee safe. You can easily keep betta with other fish using the right conditions.

MC is not hard to grow. You need a good soil base substrate like fluval stratum, tropica soil, ada amazonia or the likes and medium to high light and it should grow. Adding co2 Will help grow it faster and more lush. Adding liquid ferts also help but keep up with water changes to avoid growing algae. Good luck!

I had the finnex ray2 installed at that time, i dont remember how many watts it was but it was a strong light. I know it was 7000k dual white LED strips. I had it on a timer for 7 hours a day.

Well I haven't tried it before but I think you could grow it on gravel as long as you adding root tabs, high light and liquid fertilizer to make sure the Monte Carlo is getting enough food to grow. No I wasn't using co2 at the time of this video and as you can see, the carpet was growing but very slowly. I then installed the co2 system and the growth doubled in short period of time. You can grow monte Carlo with no co2 for sure. You need good substrate and good light.

UtpalSinghTomar Arts no I don’t think you can. Get aquatic plants like Monte Carlo or dwarf hair grass so you will have better success.

Fincasters has the same exact substrate and NO Co2,and its not holding. Jacobs Aquarium says dont try with no Co2. Seems too touchy for me.

I wasn't using CO2 at the beginig and the carpet did grow but slowly. Later I started injecting co2 and the growth tripled in a month or so. You can definitely grow monte Carlo without co2 but you will far better results with co2.

No you don't. MC can grow under medium-high light and good substrate, adding CO2 can grow your MC faster and thicker. Thanks for watching.

Shawn Hineidi bro I have a sunsun ads 500c led light.and about sustrate ,how much should i consider for a tank of 2ft Length and 1.25 ft height and width. Also please tell me the quantity of fertilizer needed.

add enough to have at least 2 inches of substrate. My advise, go with good substrate, I use Fluval Stratum which is excellent, cheaper than ADA and does the same job. You can add Fertilizer once or twice a week, every brand has its own direction written on the bottle which you can follow. for me, I dose 2ml of liquid fertilizer once a week after every water change.

Nope. No algae when I had this tank running. Frequent Water changes helped

@@ShawnHineidi - Thanks Shawn for your quick reply. I am planning to setup a 30G tank and layer it with grass seed. Do you think I can do without CO2, not very heavy planting, just grass and possible some plants? Perhaps to keep it from rotting, do water change weekly and add the API Leaf Zone fertilizer.
